View Full Version : They Moved Without Her

Please permit me to vent a little ....
Some people who have been renting a house in my area
packed up & moved today and they left the dog they've had
for two years. The dog is a female, red colored Pit Bull. They
bred her early last summer & sold all the pups. I guess they
have no use for her anymore:( She is the sweetest girl &
is starved for attention. She seems to be o.k. with other dogs & has a good respect for cats. They kept her in their back yard &
never in the house. I had called Animal Control earlier in the
day today b/c she had been let loose & was running around
the neighborhood for the last 3 days. Today, I saw why they
let her loose, they must have been planning to move all
along & didn't plan on taking her. Animal control said they
would be here around 3pm, but I haven't seen them yet.
It was heartbreaking to watch her run a path back & forth
between her old house & my house all afternoon while these
people packed their stuff and left. :( I've fed her today, but
have no room to provide shelter for her. I told the people as
they were moving stuff out of the house that their dog was
at my house and to come for her & they said "Oh Yeah". A
little while later they were gone. I really don't understand
some people.

Do you know of a local PB Rescue that would be willing to take her in on short notice?
Being a PB - will Animal Control *try* to adopt her out, or ...?
She might have a much better chance of finding a Forever Home if she's picked up by a Rescue Group.
Could you *hide* her in your back yard for a few days while you search for a Rescue? Moki would probably let her stay for a lil while! :D

Lizbud, I can't understand how folks can be so unattached to their pets/animals. I guess it takes all kinds to make up this world, and you are unlucky to have had an unkind, kind living next door.
I hope you can find a rescue group for this poor dog and that it all works out. Keep us posted.
I would love to help, but I live so far away. Maybe we could all chip in to board her somewhere until she gets rescued?
Let us know. Good luck kind lady.

I would not have called Animal Control normally, but they
have a new Director now & old policies about Pits have now
been changed. No automatic pts policy on Pit Bulls. Supposedly
they will evaluate each dog on it's merits for adoption. Thanks for
the reminder about Pit Rescue, I will check that out tonight. As
for keeping her in the back yard. I did that today for awhile, but
she seemed so anxious to get out again, I let her back out.
Moki is thrilled to have a friend to play with & probably would
love to have her stay around. (Moki is as big as she is).
It's sleeting & snowing outside now and I'm concerned about
her staying warm enough. The neighbor that is right next door
to her old house has indoor/outdoor carpeting on her front
porch & has been feeding her also. I hope she sleeps there
tonight. I'm going to check Rescue groups now.

Unfortunately this type of thing happens all the time. The daughter of our friends saw this little girl thrown out of a moving car. Now she has a home with that daughter and spent Christmas with the folks. She is such a good dog, at one year old, puts mine to shame. http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid45/pef12565864d2847261c14859cd929585/fcd3c314.jpg
Oh my. This is such a sad thing and once again makes me ashamed of my fellow humans. How could they do such a thing, but of course that question is as old as time itself. I am so glad there are people like you and your neighbor who are willing to help such a poor little soul. I was watching Animal Precinct last night and sometimes I almost have to turn it off when I witness the inhumanity of humans! **sigh** Please do keep us posted on this poor little one.

How sickening. Poor, dear girl must be frantic, wondering where her "loving parents" have gone. It defies comprehension how some people's conscience's allow them to treat living creatures so cruelly, without a second thought. From my experience with PB rescue, they are hard pressed to be able to provide foster homes for the dogs prior to an adoption but will help in providing links, posting all of the info./pics/on PB rescue websites, etc. My heart is breaking for this little sweetie:( Does anyone in the neighborhood have a garage she can sleep in tonight?? I'm so sad:( I hope the local shelter will try to find her a home.

I hate humans! Have you called Rosie to see if she had any room or any ideas? Those people deserve the same thing happening. What would they do if they had no home or no food? They, of course, would get help from the government, which is not an option for animals.

I was able to find a local PB Rescue network locally. I got the
number from a website listing. Called & left my name, number
and a brief description of the situation. Unfortunely ,Sandra is
right in that the PB network depends on people fostering & does
not have a Shelter building. AC did not show up at all yesterday.
Can you believe they told me not to feed her b/c the "owners"
could then sue me for it since she is their "property"
One person came back to the old house today to pick up
more stuff, but I watched & the dog didn't even try to go near
them. She just watched them & then came back to my house.
Evidently, nobody can do anything to help this dog until she
enters the "system", i.e., the owner turns her over to adoption
or AC picks her up for roaming around loose. Once she is picked
up by AC, she will be in the custody of the County & not the
"owner". Rescue , adoption or being "pulled" by Rosie is then
possible. What really gets me is how confused & scared she
must feel right now :( btw, I fed her today anyway. I'll make
more calls about her tomorrow. AC is closed on Sunday:(

Something's up, but I don't know what yet. The Red PB has
not been around this evening at all. The can of cat food I usually
leave out on the porch for Stumpy (a black SH cat that's been
around for yrs, but only shows up at night), is still there. Smokey
looks for this dog everytime we've been out, but she is gone.
Where, I don't know. All weekend, she never went further than
three houses in either direction and wore a path through the
snow between the houses. I hope she's o.k.I don't think she
would leave this area on her own. She doesn't know anyplace
but her backyard & this immediate area. I'll watch out for her
tonight, but I really think someone has taken her either inside
or taken her someplace else. With people still coming & going
from the old house it's hard to tell. I still don't know her name:(

I did not see her or hear her all evening or night. But, she's
still here, I heard her barking this morning. She's back at her old
house, probably in the back yard. She's was not running loose.
I drove by their house & there were kid's toys outside that was
not there yesterday. I know this dog did not have any tags on
yesterday & had been left to fend for herself from Fri-Sun P.M.
I'm really afraid that if she gets out again, or is let out by
these people, one of the neighbors might take matters into
their own hands & shoot the dog. There are so many people
who are very afraid of this breed. I would be very concerned
myself, if I didn't know her or anything about her.I'll be keeping
an eye out for her. Meanwhile my outdoor kitties (3) spent the
whole weekend in the garage. They didn't mind to
much.I let them have a catnip party yesterday afternoon.;)

She's back... The red PB is out & running around my house
now. she wasn't here when I got home after work. It's only
after dark that she showed up. She seems to be "protecting"
my house by barking at anyone who happens bye the front
of the house:( The Animal Control Dept. will not come out
after 6pm, unless it's an emergency & then Indy Police dept.
will call them for a vicious dog report, etc. She's not vicious
but probably will be reported that way if this keeps up.I did
not call AC again today b/c I thought they would now keep
her at home. I really don't know what to do other than call
AC tomorrow, but these people might have her back in her
yard by then. I can see this ending very badly for this poor
girl & it's all because of these stupid people.:(

:( I wish people would think twice before getting animals. This is so sad. I know that the Michigan Humane Society destroys all pit bulls and pit mixes, regardless of their personality. Is it possible that AC would do the same thing? I feel so bad for her. She obviouslly has some fear based aggression that is very fixable, but it won't look good to most folks looking to adopt. I am sorry that you have to go through this, Liz. I am sorry for you and sorry for Ms. doggie, especially if she's acting overly protective.
Best of luck to you, pup. I'll be thinking about you. :(

Liz,
Have you tried to talk to the people when they are at the house. Can you try and find out from them what is up? Perhaps they will turn the dog over to you if you ask and then you can contact Rosie. I feel so bad about this whole terrible mess. I hope it works out.

01-07-2003, 09:01 AM
That's exactly what I was thinking, Candy. Seems the only real hope for this girl is if the people keep her in the yard. Can't hurt to at least try to convince them and explain the predicament. Why, why, why must innocent animals continue to be persecuted and condemded due to the neglect, indifference and ignorance of people! GRRRRRRRRR!

I called the Mayor's Action Center from work this morning
about this little red girl & the events of last weekend.(A.C. not
showing up, people letting her run loose all weekend, etc). The
lady I spoke with seemed intelligent enough to understand the
dog's predicament. I carefully explained, I have no problem with
this dog, she's a very sweet dog & runs the fence with my pup.
I do have a problem with the people letting her loose to wander
around the neighborhood. I explained to this lady that I'm very
afraid that this dog will have to pay the price for these people's
neglect. She seemed to be very understanding of the problem
for the dog. This whole experience is like a nightmare, I feel
so drained by it all & it feels like things are moving so slowly.
Talking to the people still left living in the house would only
let them know who it was that complained about them. I'll just
say they are not the "Ozzie & Harriet" type of people. If they
could treat their own dog so badly, do you think they would
think twice about hurting Smokey? If he were grown & watching
the house for me, I wouldn't be too concerned, but he's still a
trusting little pup & I've got to protect him too. I feel so drained
by all this awful stuff.

I cannot believe that AC has not shown up yet!!! Here, if someone lodges a complaint for something as minor as a barking dog (time limit before a complaint can be filed is 10 mins. uninterrupted barking) animal contorl is there handing you a written warning fast! For something as errgreious as this, they'd be there in a flash, for the animal's sake as well as for people's. I feel so bad for you Liz. I know the predicament you feel yourself in. I wish there were some way you could talk with these people, but I understand you're needing to protect dear Moki. These people do not sound like the type who would be understanding of your concerns. Have you been calling AC, bugging them? What do they say? What did the Mayor's Action Center tell you to do/what they will do?? Poor you; poor pup!:(

She's still here. I can't believe this. AC did not respond yet.
I talked to the Mayor's Action Center & was given a report
number & assured that since I had reported this over the
weekend, that they would escalate the concern to AC. If I had
said that there was a vicious dog around they probably would
be here with guns blazing. PB rescue locally has not responded
to my phone messages either. Maybe I should have lied & said
that this girl was just a stray with no "owner' ? but then i could
not have told them what a sweet dog she really is.
AC did not come today, but the fence company came out today
to start putting up my new fence around the backyard. I'm glad
that has started, but now have no fence to separate Smokey
from the PB. Smokey thinks it's just great, but "Red" seems
more interested in me than him. I'm afraid she might nip him
or hurt him somehow in an effort to get to me. I can't handle
one wild excited pup in an open yard with a wild excited PB
girl who is so starved for attention that she jumps & spins
whenever Smokey & I go out for his potty.I'm probably doing
everything wrong, but I just can't yell at her to back off. Too
many people have already yelled & shooed her off. I'm trying
here, but I am concerned for Smokey too.
p.s. Someone has removed her collar since yesterday, so I have
no way to confine her somewhere else.
Dixieland Dancer

Liz,
I thoroughly understand your concern to make sure Mokie is ok. I will pray that everything works out for this love starved dog. Perhaps you can get an inexpensive collar for her and tie her up somewhere so she won't run loose but is seperated from Mokie until AC gets their act together.

01-09-2003, 11:06 AM
Sue,
She was not around anywhere last night after work:( I had
been in touch by PM with Mike & Molly. I was to get another
collar (some more food) & attach her to an old fence post in
the back yard & Mike could come down, pick her up & bring her
to Southside Shelter as a stray.(No legal problems for Rosie).
I've got the collar, 3 lbs of hamburger & two large soup bones
to keep her entertained while waiting for transport to Rosie's.
But I didn't see or hear her at all last night or this morning
while outside with Moki.I called the Action Center this morning
and asked for an update on the report # they gave me, but
they said they have not been updated by AC. I'm going to do
some snooping around this evening, check these people's yard,
etc., to see if she's there.I will offer to buy her from them &
then will be able to get her to the Shelter.( If they were given
a warning ticket & allowed to keep her) Don't think she'll ever
be safe or loved with these people. Liz.

I really hated to post bad news, but I have not seen or heard
her since the first part of last week. I talked to Molly Thurs. eve.
and both she & Mike were ready to come at a moment's notice
to help pick her up & transport her to Shelter.Either AC picked
her up, or the people have hidden her somewhere. Her house
is only three houses away from me & I know I would have heard
or seen her in their yard is she were still here. She should be of
some value to these people, if only as a breeder dog, I would
think. I fear AC has taken her. Molly told me that
she heard that Indy AC has not changed their policy on Pits:(
If that's the case, she's at Rainbow Bridge. I will call AC again
tomorrow to see if they have an update on the report number
they gave me.It's a very different "feel" around the neighborhood
since she's disapeared. The local stray kitties have re-appeared,

As luck would have it, I did find out a lot more info today.
I called the Mayor's Action Center, gave them the report num,
etc, & the records had been updated since last I called. She
was picked up on Weds. 1/8/03 and the "owners" were cited
(served papers/with fines) for turning the dog out, having no
license, proof of rabies vac., etc. She was not brought in as a
stray, so she'll have 7 days for her owners to re-claim her.
They said that PB's are not put up for adoption...If she's not
re-claimed or pulled by PB Rescue, she's pts. They said a PB
rescue person comes through AC once a week & pulls dogs.
She would not give me the Rescue's number, so I called Rosie
& she suppied a name & contact number. Called Amy, the PB
rescue person & explained the situation about the red girl.
PB Rescue promised to go & pull a "hold" on her for the PB
group & at least give her an evaluation for adoption. The PB
rescue person said "Don't you just hate scumbags like that who
would throw away a dog"? I couldn't agree more... I feel some
ray of hope for this little girl. :)

I don't have any news yet. I did not call the PB rescue person
yesterday, but I did call today & left a voice mail message.
I'm starting to get a bad feeling about this. Two days after I
learned the red girl was picked up by AC, I had a dream about
her. She(don't know her name), was laying in a green grassy
field & she was smiling the way dogs do when they are resting
and peaceful. The dream woke me up & i told myself that this
could mean good, happy times were ahead for her. I swear,
sometimes I "think" I hear her with her soft whine when I'm
outside in the yard with Moki. I hope she's o.k. & that she's
not too scared or lonesome, wherever she is.:(
I don't know what else to do but wait and call about her again
