Wow! What a wonderful update regrading Dusky and his blockage! But how frightening, having to rush him off to a NH vet, suffering such scary symptoms! How did the vet know the blockage was cleared? Well, regardless, that's terrific news, and hopefully he'll be eating with gusto, no puking! But isn't this Dusky's 2nd bout with Lyme?:confused: I thought after his first bout he was vaccinated against it. Well, I hope his symptoms subside soon with the help of his medication; poor boy has been through so much! Love and hugs to dear Dusky, and Lulu too!!!:love::love::love:

We thought the blockage had reoccured, so they did an x-ray - and voila - nothing there! Dusky has had Lyme and been treated for it before, yes, and has been vaccinated against it.But this is his second bout anyway. We suspect he may have had it lurking in his system before we ever adopted him. He was found as a puppy in a box by the side of the road, so covered with fleas and ticks that he was anemic and barely survived. Since then, he has been essentially "allergic" to fleas, and it would make sad sense that Lyme has been present in his system since then.

Folks, I won't be updating the sites today, but will do so tonight for tomorrow. A lot of driving today, now I have to go host the Ceramics Open Studio, as one of the usual hosts is in Spain (Her fiancé is a professional bike racer), and the other is traveling for the weekend, the only chance she has gotten lately! (She has two small children, so this is a big deal for her!)

If they're at risk of getting bruised from being kicked by a human or a donkey, or other animal, by annoying them, they're in real danger of being very seriously hurt some time.

Because their job - Lulu's in particular, though Dusky helps - is predator control. They chase off, or scare away predators. When Lulu got run over last summer, we lost five birds to predators when she was not "on the job."

They are generally good about sticking around our property, when not chasing off predators - Lulu will give chase as long as necessary, before heading back home. Our friend Andy once spotted her nearly a mile down the road, chasing a coy wolf down the middle of our road. As he watched, the coy finally turned and ran into the woods to the left, and Lulu was satisfied, and returned home.

The donkey kick is another matter! Our two donkeys (Hamby and Sparkles, father and son) sometimes squabble, and the dogs don't like it. Dusky may have just been in the wrong spot at the wrong time. Lulu is smarter, she will break up geese fighting, or other animals, but never gets in the way of hooves or beaks or wings!

While Dusky is recovering, they are only allowed out in a fenced area, Lulu is allowed outside of the fence when people are working in the yard, feeding animals, etc., but Dusky is not. General they both accompany Kermit on chores.

Sorry as always for the gap in days. Life has been so very busy and stressful and busy - but we have two baby peafowl - one for each momma, which is very exciting. I have no pictures, but Kermit got one video of them at last.

I am so very sorry everyone! If I described everything going on it would be like a soap opera - but I will spare you.

New baby chicks are peeping, though, so tiny and cute, and our first peafowl baby is doing well. Boo is huge, and still growing!

I am not dead, and thankfully, neither is Kritter the wazilla, nor is Kermit. We had been havng a very stressful week last week, and then Thursday Kermit ended up getting taken by ambulance to the hospital. He had a heart attack. He had a cardiac catheterization on Friday. He is still in the Massachusetts hospital where they transported him from our local small hospital. He is making some improvement, and will hopefully be allowed to come home by this weekend, but will have to do a lot of rehab work from home.

Kritter the Wazilla - he's a llama, alpaca mix, our big white fluffy guy you have seen in pictures often. He hate getting shorn, and usually requires getting sedated to do so. Well, he ended up with wool rot, and in the moisture that built up, he had a very bad fly strike which almost killed him. When randy discovered it, I spoke to the vet, I washed his neck where it was. We got Ultra Guard (pymethrin and per -something - like Frontline for large animals) and sprayed him down. But they then migrated to his chest. He was weak and anemic, but yesterday the vet came, sheared all the affected areas - with our friend Andy and Randy helping to keep Kritter in place, and although everyone knows camelids spit, this was the first time I have seen Kritter do so. He was NOT happy, but is now clean shaven in all the affected areas, got a shot of antibiotics, and a lot stronger and more comfortable.

So very sorry to hear this, Karen! How scary! Thankfully Kermit is on the mend, hopefully home soon! Fingers crossed the rehab goes well, but sounds like you're going to be shouldering much of the farm work for now. Be sure to take care of yourself too! Kermit is spending the day resting. He's not at home, but at his "brother" (unrelated but a dear friend of nearly 30 years) Robert's farm, where it is quiet, and he is not responsible for any of the animals. Dusky, our sweet, empathetic dog, is with his papa. He is tired, after over-exherting yesterday, but working on slowly getting stronger again.

I will work on getting the sites updated, it has been very stressful for me, but there are people helping out now.

Good to hear, Karen! And we all know how healing and comforting the quiet, unconditional love of a beloved pet is. Maybe you need a prolonged break too, from posting the pets. Self care and rest, as much as you're able, is more important right now.

This is the anniversary of the beginning of our websites. Today begins the 25th year of PetoftheDay.com - Paul and I started it on September 1, 1997. And a year later, Dog and Cat got their own pages!

I am sorry I have been tardy getting the daily sites up some days, and missed others entirely, and have been wholly inconsistent, and thank you all for your patience with me.

Life in Vermont is wonderful, and busy, and full of animals, bu of course these websites are still of paramount importance! It is part of Paul's legacy on this earth, after all.

Please help keep the sites alive - nominate your pets, and tell friends to do so as well! I love carrying on the path we set out, to bring people a new reason to smile every day, and to celebrate pets, people, and the love and relationships between them.

Life has been crazy busy, but all is relatively well. We almost lost one of our Shagga Birds - an eared pheasant, but it looks like he's gonna make it, and the aviary that he has been supposed to be moving in to is finally 90% done, and hopefully we will finish it this weekend or soon anyway.

i so know how that goes. we got hit with a wave of cold and -19°F not that long ago here. not fun but i am used to it living in Washington state
my aunt who lives in Oklahoma has been getting 20°F and hasnt seen above freezing temperatures in the last couple of days. quite cold for that area.

A further update - I will be borrowing Kermit's laptop - which is new enough to run the almost-current version of Photoshop, but need to clear space on the drive for that to happen. I look forward to getting this all sorted out, and to be able to update the sites again.

there are some websites that offer some photoshop features for free without having to download or install anything.

Dear Pet Talk people - I am sorry he sites have not been updated recently. I am frustrated trying to get everything working on the laptop to prepare the images, it may be a day or two still.

If you heard about the massive snowstorm that hit us, we got maybe 3 and a half feet of snow. We didn't lose power long at the farm, but most places around us did. Animals and humans all are well, thank goodness, but it has been difficult getting to the outbuildings, to say the least. Plese say a prayer for us as we get through these next few days.

The baby ducklings are with their new human, she had no idea her phone was not working. We brought them home with us, Kermit made up some food for them, as they were actually 3 days old and hungry, and then I drove them to her house, where she was so surprised and happy to get them! She had no idea I had ever called her, so will be investigating her phone issues, but the ducklings are safe!

Recent farm moments of joy:

July 31, Blossom the duck hatched 12 - yes, a full dozen - ducklings!

Today, the most skittish kitten from this spring's litter went to its forever home, was quiet all day waiting, and was calm in its new momma's arms while we did the meet and greet, and applied kitten-safe flea meds. She has recently battled an infestation in her home successfully, but we didn't want to take any chances!

Hi everyone. I am not dead, or sick, and the crazily insane season at the Post Office finally seems to calming. I hope to soon resume updating the sites.

We have had issues with neighbors complaining about our dogs (who would chase predators off the property), and they have to be locked up during the day,. We have since had several birds - including pretty Maggie, the Muscovy female duck, to predation during daylight hours, taken right from the yard. It is sad and difficult. We do not want to limit the birds ability to exercise and forage, but may need to.

Any nominations would be great to get, so we have candidates to feature!
