My mother in law's dog, Cody, who is a 5 year old pomeranian, all of a sudden has this weird hair thingie. The last time he was groomed, they shaved him completely except for his "mane" and tail and stuff--he was pretty bald looking. Anyway, now it's grown in, and he looks great again, but there is a patch that is still bald--it looks like an island--there is hair in a section, then all around it, there is nothing. It doesn't bother him at all, it just looks bad. She made an appointment at the vet, but cancelled. I have never seen this before--anyone have any ideas or suggestions??

I think I'd go to the vet. The only time hair does not grow back after grooming is when there is an underlying health reason. A very common occurance is a thyroid conditon which can leave no symptoms for a long time, but if a coat is shaved it will not grow back properly. This causes the owners to go to a vet and then they luckily find the problem. Some times this is the only early clue to such a problem. Now I am not saying this is YOUR pet's problem, but he should be looked at.

Wow, that could be serious! But it also could be something else not so serious.
