View Full Version : Poor Zazou is VERY ill

Last week we realized that something was very wrong with Zazou.
Normally Zazou was a "fast eater", meaning: she was always eating in a hurry. But since saturday she stopped eating and also drinking.
We tried to make her eat by giving her food her favorite food, but she didm't eat at all.... .
This morning we phoned our vet and told him what was happening with Zazou, and he wanted to see her as soon as possible.
He saw that Zazou had lost a lot of weight since her last visit... .
He tried to get some blood but she refused to sit still.
He had to sedate her to do this.
He will know the results this evening or tomorrow morning.... .
He said he was afraid that Zazou's condition was very very bad.... .
We are both afraid that she is dying.......:(:(:(

I hope the vet can make Zazou feel better soon.
You might try slightly warming her food so she can smell it. Sometimes that helps stimulate the appetite.
Get the stinkiest food. Hopefully, the vet will have some answers soon. How old is Zazou?

Lut, I'm sorry to hear Zazou is sick. I hope the tests will come back with good results - I'm keeping my fingers crossed for her.
Keep an eye on her, and like Kuhio says, try to entice her with some stinky food, and see if you can make her drink. Put water all around the house for her.
Sending lots of positive thoughts and kisses to Zazou - and hugs to you.

Very bad news.....:(
The vet just phonend us about the results, and they are very bad......:(
Her lever is completely ruined, her thyroid is really bad too, and her troat & gums are colouring yellow....; this means she has jaundice as well...
There is NO cure.....
The vet says the she has no oer very little pain.
So werven decided to het her a injectie with cortisone, and maybe she starts eating again then?
This only giving her (and us) some extra time....
As soon as she is real pain, we will let her go...:(:(:(:(:(
I'm so heartbroken.................

Lut, how old is she?
Zazou is 13 years old. Far to young to go to the Bridge...
This morning she got that injection. The vet advised us to let her rest wherever she wants; so she is lading in our garden, on her favorite spot.
I hope that the cortisone is working as soon as possible.
Good news: 10 minutes ago she came to the kitchen window, asking to let her come indoor.
She walked right on to her foodbowl! So we put some of her tuna, and yes, she ate it all!!!:
21 pm:She is getting more active now, and jumped on the cattree by herself! That's really positive!!
Of course we know this is only for a short period, but we are grateful with every extra day we het with her!!:love::love:

Zazou is like yesterday, even a little bit better!
She wants to be in the garden all the time, so we let her do this
At lunchtime she even came to the kitchen door to ask for food, together with her buddy Inka!
She ate some tune again, and then she returned to her "privat garden"
We're very happy with every single thing she does; but it's hard to accept that these "better" days are only
temporarily.....:(

There is not any diet that would be perfect to her, because she is to far gone..... ! Her liver is completely ruined, and this is

Zazou is better, because she gets tuna every meal now!
The vet told us that every day might be her last one, so we do all we can to spoel her...!
But...there is a new problem: last monday we took her to the vet again, because she sneezes a lot.
He gave her an injection and said there wasn't more he could do for her..... .
It didn't help at all, so she is still sneezing a lot. I timed her sneezing today, and she sneezed twice per second, at least 14 times in a row....:(
Poor sweetheart.....

I'm glad that her appetite has picked up again. The frequency of those injections depends on the cat's condition.
A cat with cancer or IBD can have them fairly often.
If Zazou is getting the shots only to boost her appetite, you might want to ask the vet about an actual appetite stimulant like Mirtazapine. Steroids can a have a lot of side effects.
If she is still sneezing due to an upper respiratory infection, she shouldn't any cortisone injections, as they depress the immune system, and they can actually cause kitty colds.

Zazou got another cortisone injection few days ago.
The vet first weighed her, and he was surprised to see that Zazou's weight was higher again:
almost 300g !!!:eek:!! Good girl!!!:love::love::love:
Because of this he said that there is prescription food that can make her thyroid gland better. It is called Y/D.
Of course we immediately said we wanted to try this!!!
She must eat this and ONLY this food (grains) during 3 weeks, which is't easy with 3 other cats around.
But we decided to give it a try; it's her 5th day now, and she hasn't eaten anything else but her Y/D!
Of course the others (especially Snoopy.....) are a bit jalous....., but we manage!
Yesterday morning Snoopy saw that Bernard left the bag with the Y/D food on the kitchen table (he forgot to put it inside the cabinet) and guess what, she managed to get the bag on the floor and gnawed an opening in it... ! We have no idea who ate from the grains...... . But
it isn't really important :)

Yes!
As from Tuesday this week, Zazou stopped eating again. Every day there was ate less and less...
Yesterday we saw that she stayed in her basket all day, only left it for a visit to the litterbox...
So we went to the DA for maybe another injection.
He indeed gave her an injectie with cortisone.
Guess what: barely 2 hours later she came begging for food!! And then she ate it all up!!

Around 5 pm we couldn't find her anywhere..... ! Only 2 hours later she did it again....

Lut, I know how hard this is, but you have to think of Zazou's quality of life. You know, cats rarely let you know if they are in pain. Ask yourself... is she comfortable and enjoying her life?
I read some advice on the web about when to say goodbye, perhaps this will help you decide. If you decide to say goodbye, is it possible that the vet come to your house?
I send Zazou, you and your family love, comfort and hugs.
Do pursue every option to your satisfaction
If there's something that can be done, then pursue it. Understand that we all have our different financial constraints that we must operate under. And for each family there are different values. Each family is different and can only allocate so many resources. So knowing this, use your resources to do everything you can for the best quality of life as long as possible. This may include pursuing alternative treatments like acupuncture or herbal formulas, depending on the nature of what is ailing your kitty. If you have pursued all options the extent that you are able than that helps remove feelings of guilt.
Do evaluate if your cat is still having fun
What is your kitty's favorite thing to do? If she is still doing this and having fun, then the time has not come to put her down. For some families, things have changed slowly over time but it seems like their cat favorite thing to do is sleep or eat. These are not the quality activities he used to do as a kitten. Think of what behavior defines your cat - stalking a toy, playing get the mouse with your toes under the blanket, these are the things that say your cat still enjoys life.
Do accept that when it becomes time it is a loving decision
Because we love our kitties is why we even consider the euthanasia option. We don't want to see our four-legged baby suffer. But sometimes it is a hard decision as they cannot tell us directly that they are ready to go. Therefore we have to make the decision for them and we do it out of love.
Do celebrate life and the good times you shared
We share our lives with cats so it is a better place for both of us. So when the time comes, it honors our time together when we think about all of the good times. Lamenting what we perhaps could've done differently does not honor the bond - it weakens it. Cats share their lives with us to bring beauty; beauty comes with joy and happy memories.
Do not delay when the reason is for yourself
Some cat parents know that it is more than past time for their beloved kitty to pass on. But for some reason these people simply cannot let it happen. And they understand that this is something on the inside of them. They know their cat is asking to go, and they know their cat is not having fun anymore, But they can't make the decision. The other tips will help these families in this very hard decision.
Do not delay when it becomes clear that your cat is suffering
When it becomes obvious that it's time, gather your family quickly. There are veterinarians who will come to your house or the whole family can come to the veterinary clinic. Regardless, to best honor your beloved kitty, do it quickly so your baby has peace. It is not every situation where it becomes obvious that it's time all of a sudden, but when it does embrace it with love.
Do not blame your self
Part of the grieving process includes bargaining. We bargain with our memories and we chastise ourselves that maybe we should've done something differently. The past is done, it cannot be undone, therefore cherish the past and love your cat, and yourself, by not blaming yourself.

Thank you Randi for posting this text for us!!!!
Zazou is still the same, not eating anything... .
But, we're sure she still enjoyes being around:
---> She has always enjoyed playing in our garden. Playing with leaves, chasing the birds, etc... ; though she is very weak, she keeps begging to be allowed to go outside... . This morning my husband went outside with her, and she was really happy with this. Then he put her on the ground and let her do that's she loves most: walk around. He followed her making sure she couldn't go into hiding. She went to all her favorite places. 10 minutes later, they both came back inside. We're so glad to let her do this, because she really loved it; she was purring all the time! Right now she is back in her favorite basket:love:
We won't help her to cross the bridge yet, not when she doesn't want this.....
:love::love:Zazou :love::love:

Thanks for caring!
Zazou is not eating anymore, at most 5 to 10g per day is her maximum..... , today nothing yet...
She is now skin and bone .....!
But despite this, she is still so enjoying her favorite habits as walking in the garden, visiting all her favorite spots there, watching the birds (we always hang birdfood in our trees), dreaming of catching a birdie, porring whenever we pet her, etc.... . Because of these things, we just don't have the heart to go to the vet and letting him help her to the Bridge.... . Are we doing wrong?? I don't really know....:(:(:(
We both love her immensely much :love::(:(

As long as she is enjoying herself, you are doing nothing wrong, Lut! Enjoy every day with her, as I know you are. These days and moments are precious as diamonds.

As Karen said, as long as Zazou can still find joy in her daily routines, there's nothing wrong with leaving her be and loving her as much as you do.
I think these are the hardest moments living with a beloved pet. No matter what, there is always guilt involved, and talking to the vet and other pet parents can be helpful.
It is important though to assess your own comfort level even if Zazou still seems to be enjoying life.
Does it bother you to see her like this... The exact right moment can never be known.

Well the only fact that bothers me is that she is'nt touching her food.... ; for the rest: we both love her to pieces, we love her as if she is our own kid! Seeing her running in our garden, seeing her visiting all her favorite spots, hearing her loud purr, it all makes us happy, it even makes us living her more and more..., every single day :love::love:!!!

Zazou's weight dropped with almost 550g in only 24 days.....::eek::(
He saw that she is still alert and so, so he gave her another injection with cortisone; He warned us that this time she got the maximum tolerated doe:(
Her appetite is complete back now, so we are happy we gave her another chance!
Let's hope she can stay with us again, for some time..... :(

Yesterday morning Zazou went to the vet once more.
He says we sure are taking the best care for Zazou possible. Normally she wouldn't have lived on for more than a month...! And hey it is already almost 5 months ago since we learned how sick she was ....:p
But hey, lots of love and care, and millions of soft hugs, can do wonders!
We :love::love::love: Zazou sooooooo very much....!
She got another shot with cortisone, and yes, this morning she is eating well again!
Yesterday she was in her catbed all day, not even coming out for a drink, food, or a hug; and now she is eating really well!
Then she walks around in our garden, and looks at all the birdies who are coming to the many "seed-towers"! We always say "Zazou is watching Disney Channel again!! ;). Right now she is sitting next to the pond, drinking from that water, and then she is doing a good "cat-wash"!
We see she is enjoying "cat-life" again and this is all we want!
:love::love: Zazou :love::love:

This is such good news! I hadn't heard anything for so long I was fearing the worst. I'm glad it's the best!
That is the best news ever!! I am so thrilled she is in remission or whatever you wanna call it. SO great! Have you got a sitter for Z or will she go to Kitty Hotel? I don't imagine she'd enjoy a cruise too much 🙀 😱 I had only one cat in my life that loved to travel, Mozart. He was a seal point Siamese and would jump on my shoulder every single time I left the house, I even took him to work a few times. One of a kind that one, must write a book about him one day. P.s. I never, ever left him alone in the car, please never do that anyone 🙈

All 4 Gabriels Girls (cats, LOL) are going where they love it the most: they stay right here at home :)
They may use the whole house, ans because our house is quite large, they have plenty and plenty of places to go to and to play or sleep.
Our daughter-in-law Tiffany Will come to our house 2 times a day! She almost passes our house on her way to work in Ghent, so she will come once in the morning, and then again on her way back home. She is a real sweetheart and she loves our cats as much as we do
Because 3 out of 4 girls need different special food, she will stay untill they finish their meals! I am pretty sure she will pamper dear Zazou and give her lots of huggies!!
Of course it is still more than 50 days before we leave, so we have no idea if Zazou will still be around......:(:(
