Special prayers are really needed for my daughter's dog
Obie. I've spoken about him before on PT.Obie is a 12 yr old
Shep/Dobie mix boy who is the light of her life. She adopted
him from the Indy Humane Society when he was 8 weeks old.
Obie has not been feeling well for the past week or so. Not
eating well, etc. My daughter took him to the vet today and
e-rays revealed a large mass on his spleen.Obie is having
blood work done to see if he is in renal failure. Results by
tomorrow. If bloodwork is o.k., they will do surgery & biopsy
on the tumor. They say he can live without the spleen, but if
the biopsy is not benign, there won't be much hope for him.
Would you please say a little prayer that Obie's tests come
out o. k.? My daughter's heart is breaking & so is mine for
her & for that sweetheart of a poochie, Obie. Thank you.,Liz.

Obie will in be our thoughts and prayers....
Oh my this is sad. My heart aches to watch dogs age and in particular when they have spent their entire lives as loving and faithful companions. I feel the grief your daughter is feeling now and will pray for Obie and for her as well. This sounds like quite a hurdle to get over, even for a younger dog, but with prayers nothing is impossible. {{{hugs to Obie and your daughter}}}

Thank you all for your kindness & for your prayers.
My daughter called this morning to say that the blood tests
came back not good. The levels were higher than expected
and lead them (vets) to believe the mass has spread to the
llymph system, They did a ultrasound which also shows the
liver may be involved. The vets(in Chicago) say if they were to
do the surgery now & found other organs involved besides the
spleen, they would opt to not let him wake up from the
anesthetic. Lisa does not want Obie to die with strangers.
The vets said she could take him home for the holidays & be
able to spend some time with Obie. She is on her way now to
pick him up.She have previously made an appointment for Friday
the 27th with our family vet here in Indy because of Obies not
eating normaly & a tenderness in the stomach. Our Indy vet
has know Obie since he was a puppy & she wants to go ahead
with the Friday appt. to get his opinion & if worst comes to
worst, have him pts here with family & friends around him.
I feel so bad for her. She was such a comfort to me when
Buddy was ill and after he when to Rainbow Bridge. I helped
to raise Obie and he was my inspiration to get my own sweet
Buddy. I wish I could take the pain away for her & for Obie.

Oh, Liz, I know how you and your daughter feel right now. I will be praying for more miracles. They do happen. I know how scary it is.
I am so sorry for the news. Are you using the specialists in Downers Grove (Dr. Badestscher?) or the Drs. in Berwyn?
My heart is breaking for you and your daughter right now. Sometimes when it sounds hopeless, though, there can be miracles. Obie's condition sounds somewhat like Bandit's except that Obie is more advanced.
I would do what your daughter is doing. I would bring him home, make him a steak and love him. I did that with Wolf when the vet said to put him down. I said wait til Monday. I took him home, gave him steak and loved him. On Monday, he perked up and was not put down. He lived for another six months, then died in his sleep when his heart gave out. He was 10. He was my heart dog.
Please send us a miracle!!

Sue,
My daughter's Vet is Dr. Reed at the County Line Veternary
Hospital in Naperville. I don't know the Chicago area that well
so don't know where that is. Anyway, she brought Obie home
this afternoon. He had been re-hydrated & actually ate some
of his food. She said he's acting very lathargic & not his old
self at all, but Obie's glad to be back home. The Drs. gave him
six months max with no surgery. My daughter is committed to
giving him a death with dignity, but for now is overjoyed to
have her "baby" back, if only for a few weeks. She did confer
with our Indy Vet on the phone & he did concur with the Ill.
vet's prognosis. But, for now, Obie will be sleeping in his usual
spot on the Big bed tonight. Thank you friends. Liz.
Obie, is in my thoughts.
I am so sorry, I too will wish for a miracle.

Liz, I am so sorry to hear about Obie's prognosis. I know 12 is getting up there in age for a bigger dog, but it is just not long enough to spend with such a dream dog. The worst is knowing they are having difficulty and not knowing how much pain they are in. I hope Obie can have some more good days with his Mom and that these weeks, months, or however more Obie has can be enjoyed by them both. This is so sad. I was just going over some pictures of my departed Bailey. I still miss her after 7 years.

I STILL miss Wolf after 18 years and Avalanche after 6.
I pray that the miracle happens today, Liz. I pray that Obie can stay a while longer and go peacefully on his own, like my Wolf. My heart is with Obie, your daughter and you today.

I'm sorry to report that Obie went to Rainbow Bridge
this morning:(
After many conversations back & forth with our vet in Indy
and the vet in Chicago, my daughter decided to make a last
effort to save Obie by going ahead with the surgery to
remove the tumor on the spleen. They did confirm what had
been expected, the mass had spread to the liver & lymph
system. Obie must have been in a lot of pain, judgeing by
the size of the tumor & lesions on the other organs. There
was no way he could recover from this illness. My daughter
was called into the operating room to say goodbye to dear
sweet Obie & was there when they gave him the final
injection that sent him to Rainbow Bridge. If ever there
was a "Perfect Dog", it was Obie!!! He was a love & a joy
to be around. He will be greatly missed :( Liz.
p.s. I've told my daughter so much about PT, where so many
people truly understand and share a special bond with their
pets. Thanks to everyone for the kindness & prayers for Obie.

Liz, I was so afraid of the outcome today. My prayers are with your daughter and you at this great loss. She did all that she could for him and gave him every chance. In the end, she showed him the greatest love anyone can give. She loved him so much that she let him go. He is now free of pain; the pain is now all hers. We share your pain. I am so terribly sorry.

I would like to extend my sincere condolences to you and your daughter. What a brave decision she made to release him from his pain - but what a difficult one.
I have that decision coming soon myself and I hope when the time comes that I can do it with as much care and concern as she showed to her Obie.

I'm so very sorry Liz:(:( I, like you, and so many of us here, know what it is like to lose your heart dog and my thoughts are with your daughter during this very sad time. Obie had the best Mom a doggie could ever hope for and she did everything possible to save her boy. How brave she was, and in the end, how unselfishly loving she was, to let him go. I'm comforted to know that she was given the chance to say goodbye. Sue is so right and said it so beautifully. She freed her precious Obie from his pain and made his pain her own. My thoughts and prayers are with your daughter Liz. Please tell her so many who understand the depth of her loss, are with her in spirit. Love, Sandra

Liz, I am so very sorry.:( Many years ago we went through a similar situation with our then 10 year old GSD Duke. he was diagnosed with a spleen tumour and was let go during surgery. I hoped so very much for a happier outcome for Obie. Please know that my prayers and thoughts are for your daughter and you at this so sad time. Love Chris.
Liz I am so sorry to read that Obie is gone. Please tell your daughter that your friends at Pet Talk are here for her if she would care to just come and share some of her memories of Obie. I am glad she was there to make the decision at that time, although it is a horrible decision to have to make. I have been through it a few times myself and it is always just awful. Some day in the future when the immediate pain subsides she may again reach out for another furry companion. For now we send our love to you and to your daughter and our sympathies as well. :(

Oh, Liz, what can I say! You know we all feel so for what your daughter is going through right now. Such a sad, sad day for her. I know that your experience in losing Buddy will be of help to her in how to cope. I'm glad she was able to confer with her previous vet before the surgery. She did the right thing for Obie.

I just wanted to thank you all for the prayers & kindness
in Obie's passing to Rainbow Bridge. My daughter wanted
me to tell you how much it has meant to her.She is coping
day by day, as we all know, we must. She does have another
dog, a Lab/mix female named Coco that she first fostered at
4 mos old & later adopted & is now 3 1/2 yrs old. Coco is also
doing her part to make life "normal" around the house again.
It will take time, but your prayers have helped more than
you know. Bless you guys. Liz.
I am very sorry to hear that Obie has passed away.
Please tell your daughter that we are all thinking
of her.
