View Full Version : The Catastrophe and the Aftermath - what is next

So finally at 10 p.m. tonight Eastern time, Pet Talk has been restored from the last back-up. Sadly, this means we have two years of missing posts, but I am still holding out a bit of hope, as there is some from The Parrot Forum who contacted a recovery company about seeing what they could scrape/recover from the Internet for us.
I will also check with the friend ho was going to try to convince the hosting company to ship us the "dead" drives, to see if anything can be salvaged from either one.
I am heartsick about the two years of missing posts, so sorry everyone.

Thanks, Karen, for all your hard work bringing it back. Welcome back, Karen and all the pets and all our fellow Pet Talkers! I've missed you.

I'm glad to see Pet Talk back, and that you are OK, Karen. :) I know it's been a lot of work for you. It's sad that two years of posts are missing, though. I feel bad for the members who made such an effort to post to the pets of day, every single day, and all the great advice about sick pets. :(
But we will post more! :)
Some things are still not working right, like posting pictures and editing posts, but I bet you are looking into it.

So for now I know attachments are not working, albums are not working or are empty, and some people get a white screen after posting that then goes away. Those I am sure are fixable.
Anything else you notice, let me know, and I will work on that all tonight, as indexing the site slows down the board. I have to go attend to other things now, but so glad you are all here and posting again!
Post anything else you discover missing ... and thanks again!

I started a thread in Today's Cats on the Cat of the Day for May 7. I first titled it "Beautiful British Bella!" and it got listed in the thread list that way. Then later I changed the title to "Beautiful British Bella, COTD for May 7, 2017!" The new title shows on the post itself, but it has not changed in the thread listings.
I was thinking it might be helpful to have the dates of these animals in the titles in the listings, so people can look over the list and know which ones were featured when.
Thanks for all your hard work, Karen!

Karen, thank you for all your efforts and your hard work.
I'm very happy to be back with my PT friends.
Since I've been on PT for less than a year, all my info is gone and at this point, I can't access my profile page.
This might have something to do with me having to re-register, and the process is not finished yet.
I hope to be back completely in a few days, pictures and all.

Yeah, we should give Karen some time. :)
Anyway, yesterday I could access my albums and everything in my profile, but not today - I assume Karen is working on something.
When I posted pics from url yesterday, I could do it when I deactivated "Retrieve remote file and reference locally” - and when I had posted and got a blank page after trying to go back, I went page back and hit reply more time, and even though it said it’s a duplicate post, it won’t go on twice.
It also shows the first poster on a thread, where it should show the last... well it doesn't anymore. And editing is extremely slow.
We'll just have to wait for these little things to get fixed. Good luck, Karen! :)

Many thanks Karen for all the work. I echo the earlier comment - the important thing is YOU are well, fine, safe. And second PT IS back! A few bumps are manageable as the main thing is PT IS BACK!
I just noticed, our siggies are also back to May 2015, ha haaa.
I'd also like to thank Sandra tatsxxx11 for taking the time to go back and make comment threads for all the special dogs, cats and pets who were honored for a day but who couldn't have comments posted for the time the forum was down. What a lovely thing to do, and I know that took you time for sure.

Aww, thanks, and anyone whose signature graphic is still not working, or is missing, you should reupload it from wherever you had it in the first place if possible, okay? I am one step closer to getting older album images, etc., uploaded, and maybe some will be in there, we will see. I have the 14GB file uploaded at last, and now need to uncompress it.

I'll be exited to see album images come back, but if they don't, so be it. Does size still matter?
And thank you, Sandra for mentioning me and Pat. However, YOU have been replying to Cat, Dog and Pet of the Day all along, and I admire you for your perseverance and thoughtful replies.

Okay, the oldest of the images in my "trial album" now work. Sadly, the most recent back-up of the image files was from 2012 that I could find, the automatic back-up does not capture the image files, apparently in needs to be done separately.
If I find anything newer, I will add them, sorry folks.
Karen
05-20-2017, 10:22 PM
Okay, just tried something. Sandra - tatsxxx11's signature picture was missing. I "right clicked' it - said "open image in new window" ... and it gave me the name and place of the image "http://petoftheday.com/talk/signaturepics/sigpic713_2.gif"
I went to Google, and search for exactly that - and it found not only what I recognized as her signature image, but a couple more - one from Carole, husky_mom, and a third I didn't recognize.
I was able to save that image, and reupload it to the correct spot and now it shows up in all her posts.
So if you have missing images that end in a .gif or .jpg, try googling for them, and maybe you will find them!
Sadly the images in my album look like this "http://petoftheday.com/talk/attachment.php?attachmentid=56567&d=1370999818" so Google didn't find it.
But it is worth a shot, I obviously cannot do that for every single missing image, but you all can for the ones you notice! If you find any, and want me to upload them, let me know!

Thanks for all your work, Karen! :)
Concerning albums, I'm a little confused. Some of my albums are there, and some not. In the ones that are there, not all are showing up. Can you enlighten me on this?
It also seems that uploading pics work different now, but perhaps it's because I have another computer with 10.11.6 on it - I'm not very impressed with that. Everything worked better in the old days!

Everything in terms of album images is from 2012 and before. Anything newer than that is likely lost, sorry to say. Images are not backed up as part of the softwares normal back-up protocol, and have to be done separately. You can, however, add pictures back in, if you have the originals on your computer somewhere.

I would like to donate some money when the exchange rate gets more normal again. But $60! Easy with 10 people giving $6 each!
Karen, is there a donation link I can post?

As always, our donation page is http://petoftheday.com/fundraiser.html and thanks!
I may be naive, even ignorant as well, but why bother with archives and past posts and pictures. All the previous cats, dogs, pets of the day are brilliant but, Oh my goodness, what about just moving forward and calling it a day on the past. What am I not getting? I promise I will not be offended, it sounds like a ridiculous amount of unnecessary work to me. s**t happens, unfortunately. What about, "Sorry, we shall start afresh". A lot less effort and more concentration on..... the future. Just sayin'

I can live with whatever decision is made. But, when I use the Advanced Search function to search for threads I have started, the latest one found is from 2012. :(
All the threads from 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 to date that I started about kitties that adopted us or kitties that we had to send to the bridge, are gone. I liked looking at older threads. They were happy memories. Yes, we're all looking forward and whatever decision is made, we can live with.

Lisa, all the posts from everything up to May 2 2015 ARE here - the index just is not search correctly until ai do a command line task. Which I will do soon.
I also have a 13GB file that may contain much of the missing 2 years, or it may not. That's what I need technical help with, and once THAT is done, I will definitely update the index. I am also dealing with clients work, too, to pay the rent!

Oh, I'm so glad to hear that these files will be accessible at some point. Obviously, I have no techie skills to help you explore options. :(

Karen, you may or may not have seen many of our signatures have disappeared. I had mine both on photobucket and here, and they were uploaded before 2012. Do you know what happened?
Also many of my pictures in my albums here are missing - most were uploaded a long time ago. Do you think they might re-appear at some point after you have done everything? I cannot upload pictures to my album, either. Oh, and "Posting Areas" have disappeared, too.
I realise you're busy with other things, so no hurry - just wanted to ask.
Good luck! ;)

You signature says it was posted from Photobucket, which is why it is now missing. Photobucket is now a subscription service, so if you paid in, it would likely reappear.
What happens when you try to upload pictures? That should work ....

Thanks for replying, Karen. I uploaded the sig. pic to here just in case.
OK, I clicked on “Odds” in my albums, where I think I uploaded the sig. pic. Quite a few pics are missing
When I try to upload pics to ANY album I have here, I click on the album where I want the pic. to appear. Then “Upload pictures” > Add Files > Choose File, find it, choose it > Upload, but nothing comes up in the Attachment field where it says “ Drag previously uploaded files into this area to attach them.”
So i give up. I hope it will work some day. The problem could my new system, though (10.11.6) . I hate it! Nothing works as well as in the old days. Back in the nineties, Mac systems were SO much better - everything worked just fine! What are you using yourself, Karen? I've heard it's a bad idea to upgrade to Sierra.

I m on 10.9.5 - I avoid upgrades until people have tried them, as there's usually no stepping back!

Well, I haven't had 10.9.5, I went from 10.5 (Leopard) to 10.11.6. I far prefer the older systems, but they don't work very well anymore. I've been advised not to upgrade to Sierra, so I won't.
Do the system have anything to do with the problems you have re. vBulletin? I hope you will be able to solve it - best of luck!

No, just want to see if we can find a way to restore as much of the stuff that outside agency scraped for me (13GB) before I rebuild the search engine, so as not to duplicate effort and machine time!

LOL Glad you guys know what you're talking about. When I read the above, I thought, "Randi adopted a leopard? Wow!"
I'm guessing you guys are talking about some computer thing that I will never understand. Wishing you luck.

Ha ha, me adopting a leopard. I do love all cats, but that would be more than I could handle. :D If you remember, even Shanga scared me a bit.
