What is your favorite Thanksgiving side dish? Dessert? We had this as topic this morning as part of the children's sermon, and I was surprised the first one mentioned was mashed potatoes!

I used to love the cranberry sauce - whole berry - but maybe too much as now I am allergic to them! And the tomato aspic, and the good stuffing that was only made for holidays ... meat and potato and spices - yum!

How about you?

My Mum's recipe for candied sweet potatoes. Awesome! Perhaps the nostalgia plays a role in it being my favorite, lol. Sweet potatoes, brown sugar, and cloves. I still make it, even though there is just me here now.

Turkey skin with bacon on it - my family fights over it when the bird comes out of the oven! OK - not technically a dish...pretty partial to mashed potatoes as well.

Favorite main dish: Ham
Favorite side: Mashed potatoes with corn
Favorite desert: My aunts chocolate cake

Ugh, now I wish I were going to my aunts house this year. But it is our year to go to Bruce's family.

I love all the food on Thanksgiving so it's kind of tough to pick one favorite. Hmm, it would have to be my aunt's sweet potatoes baked with miniature marshmallows. Pumpkin pie, hold the ice cream - yuk, is a very close second.

Maybe she'd give you her recipe and you could make one to take with you?

I don't think it is a special recipe. It's just that she brings it. I always remember that she would make it that morning and then wouldn't have enough time to let it cool before frosting it. By the time we went to eat it, it would be the "leaning tower of chocolate cake". :)

Plus, Bruce's family is not big on sweets like my family is. We have almost as much, if not more, on the desert table as there is on the food table at my family functions. :p

Oh another favorite is my aunt's (the one that hosts the dinner) homemade rolls. SOOOO yummy!!! Now that's a recipe I'd like to have. I'll have to have my mom ask her for it. :)

We've already had our main Thanksgiving meal; yes it was early. Several people brought food; it was really good: ham, turkey, dressing, gravy, cranberry salad, creamed potatoes, greens, a corn/zucchini casserole/salad, garden peas, yeast rolls, sweet potato casserole (YUM), lemon meringue pie, spice cake, chocolate pie, homemade pumpkin pie. No, we don't put ice cream or coolwhip on it.

When I say "homemade pumpkin pie", I mean from scratch. We bought the pumpkin several weeks ago, peeled it, cut it in chunks, boiled it, strained it, mashed it, strained it some more, and froze it. Then recently I thawed out a pack & made the pie. Fresh frozen/thawed pumpkin tastes so different (better imo) from bought canned pumpkin although I wouldn't turn either one down in a pie LOL.

My fav part are the desserts!!

Favorite side - the dressing
Favorite dessert - pie or fruit

Kaycountrygal, my college roommate's mother-in-law is a 4-H mom. She makes pumpkin pie from scratch as you described it. My roomie keeps the frozen cooked pumpkin on hand from autumn through Christmas and uses it in a few different ways. It tastes different from pumpkin pie made with the canned pumpkin.

Other favorite Thanksgiving treat - Ocean Spray jellied cranberry sauce (we have a divide in my family, jellied vs. whole berry, so I bought both!)

I prefer a baked ham to turkey, but I stay with tradition. We do a ham on Christmas tho.

Favorite side? - home made cranberry sauce or sweet potatoes
Favorite desert? - mince meat pie - or apple pie

I made 2 pumpkin breads today, and tomorrow I'll do a pumpkin pie and an apple-cranberrry pie. No mince meat, since nobody likes it but me. :(

Oh, yes, Aunt Bertha used to do a Cranberry Orange relish - whole fruits of both kind, some orange juice! and a little sugar to taste, grind it up in a food processor and done! Yummy yummy! I miss that! (allergic to cranberries now!)

MY MIL always did this, but I never acquired a real taste for it. I just like the whole cooked cranberry sauce - made mine this a.m. - along with my pies.
