At this point in time, I'm going to ask for prayers for Sam. Prayers that he starts feeling better. Prayers that I can get a vet to cooperate.

I met with the vet I like today. I was even late because Sam decided to hide where I couldn't get him. He got poked with a broomstick until I annoyed him enough to move. This is the bottom corner of the cabinets where the thin man couldn't get in.
I like this lady and I now know which days she works.
I met with the vet at 5pm today. Right now he is getting an antibiotic for the infection in the mouth and ear (he has issues with wax in his ears. always has) and some extra steroids to help with inflammation. Convenia and a Steroid. (I was refused this on Tuesday) I got an extra bag of fluids and I may get some pedialyte (suggested by a stomatitis group). He has extractions scheduled for 1 week from today. I need to hydrate him daily. I am hoping to get him hydrated and eating so he can have the surgery and feel much better.
He was also given an appetite stimulant, and it must work fast. He ate a little bit when he got home.
Horner's Syndrome was discussed. Sometimes it's idiopathic, but usually there is an underlying cause: infection, concussion, stroke, tumor, neuro.
If all of this doesn't work, we will look at other causes of uneven dilation.

Yay! You got the good vet! Good to hear that Sam is eating a bit. Prayers that the Convenia kicks in quickly and that Sam feels much more comfortable. :)

Thank you for your prayers
From Friday the 14th:
You should know that Sam is much better today. He licked at some food last night and this morning. He also got a spoon of babyfood last night and another this morning. But surprise he wanted more cat food after that, AND I caught him finishing up somecat else's bowl a little later.
He has absorbed the fluids from yesterday, so he will get another dose tonight.
He was given more Sub-Q fluids tonight. The needle popped out at 100 ml so we let it go. Sam decided to hide in Happy Place number 2, an upside-down chips box from Aldi; it works like a cat cave and has some old clothes in it.
Yes, they are spoiled.
Today, Saturday the 15th:
And Sam just went after his favorite dry food a few minutes ago. Natural Balance original flavor. I'm going to pick up a can of it and see if he will eat it.
And his right cheek is very swollen just now. That side of the face has shown some swelling. The is the same side as the eye with the nictitating membrane showing and the pupil will small dilation.
Poor baby. But he is still eating. I chopped his dry food in my veggie chopper, and let him have a few bites. The rest is soaking now. I hid the bag. He just ate a half-can of DVP NB Venison.
Sam's right jaw and cheek are very swollen. he is uncomfortable and is refusing to eat. His face is so swollen he eyes are narrowing and the nose is almost recessed.
I'm going to try to burrito him and get some clindamycin in him.
I made some chicken tenders earlier. I put some water in the pan and made a juice for him. He lapped up every bit of it.
I haven't yet summoned the courage to purrito him so I ca get some meds down his throat. I will give him some more liquids tonight. I may put up all the foods and see how he is in the morning.

He is and is not interested in eating so I may have to give him a stimulant. He was interested in sitting by a window, so I lifted him to the cat tree. We had a great love session, too.
I still think at times, he's not sure where he is.
I will call the vet in the morning and see if they will give me some hypos of an alternative antibiotic. No fluids last night but i will give some tonight.

Aww, when he's felling better, I am sure his appetite will spring back, but in the meantime, will he even take some chicken soup or the always favorite (stinky) clam juice?

Yeah, today he's not interested in the baby food or chicken broth or soup. I got some chicken soup/stew on the stove now. If he doesn't do that I've got to figure out how to get the appetite stimulant in him. He gets sub-Q tonight. Perhaps I have make a powder of the pill and get it on his tongue.

Our prayers and positive thoughts are going out for Sam. Once our vet put RB Groucho on medication and gave me something to wrap the pill in that tasted like a treat. I don't remember what it's called (sorry) but you might want to mention it to your vet. Sending lots of feel better lovies and scritchies to Sam.

Yes, Sam's dental is this Thursday. I'm glad I scheduled it further out since he needs to get hydrated enough for surgery.
I'm not sure what you mean - "even the nice vet". Sam is just very sick. he gets fluids tonight. I gave him a break on Saturday and Sunday. I'm going to inject him with the Clindamycin under the skin at the same time I give fluids. I already put it in the hypo. I have some appetite suppressant (oops, stimulant) and tuna juice, so that gets put in a syringe to be given orally.
The swelling has reduced a little, but even when he ate over the weekend it was on his left. The swelling is on the right.
And right now he is lying near me, sweet baby.
Poor me is right, too, and more than you know. My sinus infection resurfaced last week. My nose now bleeds. And I am tired, fatigued. Trying to keep hydrated myself since I love soda, esp Pepsi. Pepsi is now on my list of things to be avoided. The right ear is still somewhat infected, but the infection reappeared on the left side. The change in weather meant my jaw was swelling and that put pressure on the ears or sinuses.
I'm taking myself to a doc tomorrow.

You do mean stimulant, not suppressant, right?
Aww, so sorry your are feeling yucky! My big brudder just started antibiotics for a sinus infection, too! Can you take some iron to help make up for the bleeding? No wonder you are tired, too!

Yep I did. Fixed. Thanks. I don't know if I should have given the Clinda via hypo, but Sam is so bad right now, he can only get better. Someone on Facebook, a vet tech told me it's not sterile, which i already knew. I figure we survived a lot of infection the last several million years. He also got more AB orally.
I found out that my favorite vet doesn't do dentals, so I'm trying to arrange for a different vet. If I had know that she didn't do dentals I would have asked to see the other vet. I might have to take Sam to the Cat Clinic. I made it clear that the other woman is not to touch my cat.
I'll get some iron tomorrow. It's cold outside.
Thanks

Thank you all for the prayers. We still need them. I apologize fo the late post. I thought I had posted here.
The surgery has been postponed for several reasons: Sam is still dehydrated by 6%, he is slightly anemic, and his white cell count his a little high. The doc is afraid he won't do well under anesthesia because of the dehydration and anemia, but she left it up to me. So I have to give him fluids every day now and have him checked next week. He got a shot of XNL (?) and some more appetite stimulant. That works quick because he ate right away when he got home. She wasn't keen about me injecting him with an antibiotic, but said if the antibiotic worked the first two days, she would give me some to inject in his fluids.
She thinks there is something else going on. I mentioned the swelling on the right side. She said his teeth didn't look that bad. I'm wondering if a fragment was left in by the previous dentist.
So this is a wait and see.
Now off to the human doc for my sinuses.

Me, too.
I got chewed out by someone in another group for not taking him to a feline dentist. Not just a cat specialist, but a dentist.
The doc, a cat specialist, says his gums are barely irritated and the swelling has gone down on the right side. The eyes are still dilated unevenly.
Some of this is psychosomatic, but not all of it. He does not feel well, and it may have been going on longer than I thought. I've been so sick, it is possible I missed subtle signs.
Any help or thoughts are appreciated.
Catty1

Does this specialist not have any ideas?
Perhaps as the swellings go down the eyes may improve?
Sorry I'm not much help.

No problem.
The specialist thinks there is something else going on, but since Sam can't tell us what we need to know it's hard to say. A few weeks back Sam was trying to go outside and he has occasionally made efforts to do just that. At first I just thought he was mad at me, but I wonder if he's trying to go off somewhere.
He's never been a cuddly cat, or I would just hold him.

Well, I talked to the doc today (Friday). She said his gums do not look swollen or red, so there is little chance that this is dental. Oddly enough, tonight I just noticed that his right ear looked a little red. The exterior portion of the ear canal is swollen. I'm not sure if this is the ear infection or a tumor expanding. Sam seems to be showing a new symptom the day after I take him to the vet.
It may also be that he is scratching the ear. Of course, when we were at the vets, the swelling behind the ear and cheek had subsided.

Sam is now partially blind. His left eye is totally dilated and is larger than the right eye. I do not think he can see out of the left eye at all.
Fluids do no good, since he seems to pee the fluids out without retaining any.
I'm just waiting and watching. He still grooms himself and nibbles some. He is resigned to my ministrations, but refuses oral meds.
