My baby, my big orange boy, Zingo was diagnosed with diabetes January of 2013. We have been doing ok with that...until Wednesday night. Not sure what happened but his blood sugar dropped way too far and he was out of it, twitching, not responding. We called the vet who did a phone consult and told us to get some kero syrup into him. Ok we did about 6ml...the twitching stops for the most part but there is definitely nobody home...then he has 3 seizures...11pm we take him to the emergency vet, arriving a little after midnight. I walk in carrying him wrapped in a blanket, he has his head thrown back and his little tongue hanging out...they honestly thought he had already passed...they grabbed him to start treatment...it took everything I have in me to not grab him back and just hang on. His blood sugar was so low it didn't even register when they tested it. They started an IV and admitted him...it is now Friday and they still have him. The grand mal seizures have stopped, he is now having what the doc is calling partial seizures, facial twitches from the way she described them. They are putting him on a low dose continual seizure med, hoping to get those controlled. Then wean him off that tonight and see what happens tomorrow. Because of the big seizures he had, his sight is gone at this time. She thinks that will correct itself once the seizures are controlled. His blood sugar is back to about where it should be, a little high from what she said but that is better than low....I have cried so much in the past 48 hours...please keep him in your thoughts. I told him if he felt the need to leave me to go ahead...I'm hoping he comes back to me....:(

sigh...partied a little too soon. I went out to visit yesterday and found out that they were going to call to tell me to come get him , he was being discharged...so I was in an exam room with him while they finished up all the discharge paperwork and stuff. It felt so good to hold him and hear him purr...and yes I cried when I saw him :) but after about 20 minutes or so he had a very mild (in comparison to those he had on Wednesday) seizure. I ran and got the tech who took him back to be examined. The doc came and talked to me, she said that when they discontinue all of the meds she usually allows them 1 freebie, so to speak, like they have to get that last one out of their system...well as she was examining him he had 2 more minis, so she was bundling the 3 minis into his 1 freebie. She was willing to let me take him home but with our work schedule and the fact that we live an hour away from the emergency vet, I had them keep him last night for observation. I'm hoping to hear this afternoon that there were no minis or anything and we can go get him after work. If so I am taking tomorrow off to spend with him....as far as his being blind from the seizures, he was exploring the exam room and they have wooden exam tables, I would actually call them tables with cabinets underneath, and he navigated around it so I think he can see shadows at the very least....thank you all for your thoughts and prayers, we have never gone thru anything like this....

Thank you everyone! Zingo came home on Monday afternoon. My poor guy was so exhausted. I took yesterday off to be home with him just to keep an eye on things and give him all of his meds, he did great. I hated leaving him this morning :(
He and I napped together yesterday and it was so wonderful to feel him snuggled against me and to listen to his purr....

I'm glad he's doing better. If he'll put up with it you might want to consider home blood sugar testing.

My big boy is amazing! He is now off of the insulin! His diabetes has gone into remission (if only that could happen in humans!)!!! We are going to retest him about a month to see where we stand but this could end up being a permanent thing. So he is off the insulin, he is off the tummy meds, and he is only taking one of the seizure meds! Love him!!!!!

Such good news, great to hear! I know some humans can lose weight an exercise enough to get off the insulin, so it is great your kitty is off it now, too!

Oh my goodness! I've been through similar once with my Dad, who is also diabetic. I am so sorry you and Zingo had to go through this. It is such a scary thing to witness in another being!
Now he is home and that is likely the BEST medicine -- being with you, being in his routine. Prayers from RI.

So am I, I was diagnosed almost 34 years ago...when Zing was diagnosed I told him "No problem, we can take our shots together!" :p I have had some low sugar episodes, my husband has become quite good at just looking at me and knowing that something isn't right...fortunately nothing as severe as what Zingo went thru...
And if I am not mistaken the blindness they thought he had, IMO, has cleared up as well. He is certainly good at chasing the dot and playing with his string....
