View Full Version : Cat Snot
The cat has already been to the vet. Nothing can be done for her, she was born like this. Other then sneezing huge amounts of snot, the kitty is healthy and acting normal.
Does anyone have a kitty like this, and does anyone have any tips on how to stop the snot?
Having snot all over the house, all over us, and in our shoes, is really gross lol

I'd take her to a different vet! What is causing the congestion, sure;y that would be best to figure out!

Get a second opinion for sure.
I have heard of people using Lysine for cats with snot problems.
Also, running a hot shower with the bathroom door closed and you and kitty inside will give her a good steaming and maybe enable her to clear out more stuff...which would hopefully mean less around the house!
I rarely hear anyone use the good old word snot anymore, good to hear! I'm not an authority but it sounds like an allergy to me. That's all I got about the snot sitchy. All the very best of luck sweethearts!
Oh frick, sorry, if it it is an allergy remove the source. Like finding a needle in a bloody haystack, I know. Never say never, keep the faith. and ya, snot all over is sooooo gross. Been there, got grossed out.
I am just wondering if anyone knows if there is an antihistamine for cats? I have no clue, but if there is...... may be worth a try?

She has chronic sinus infections (I believe that's what it's called) and she doesn't respond to treatments (she's been to 2 vets already and was looked at by a shelter vet too).
I was just hoping someone else had a really snotty cat that could possibly shed any sort of light, as snot sucks lol
She has lived with other cats and non of them ever became sick with anything, and neither did any of her littermates. So it's not contagious.
Other then the snot, she's a happy kitty.

If I do not take my allergy meds on a regular basis, I get sinus infections. Untreated, I am sure they would be chronic like hers are! Have you ever tried whatever the kitty equivalent of Benadryl would be? Benadryl is not strong enough for me, personally, but it might be a start!
My snotty cat was allergic to plastic. She didn't ingest it but we changed her bowls to glass. Metal will work as well.

Not sure what she had at the shelter, but shes has metal for several months. I heard plastic making cats sick, so I never used plastic bowls for my kitties.
She started a new food a couple days ago (her and her owner just moved in) and I'm hoping the quality boost might make a difference in her immune system(acana). So far there is no change between recipes, so its prob not a specific food item that's causing it.
Instead of the hot shower steam, do you think a hot humidifier would get the same results?

Yes, as long as it is in a confined space.

Perfect, I'll try that tomorrow.

There are 2 anti-histamines that my vet has recommended I use for one of my guys. Claritin 2.5mg daily or Chlortripilon 2 mg daily. So depending on how the kitty is taking pills either of those work. Personally I prefer the Claritin b/c is it easier to split (into quarters) and does not cause my guy any problems with sleeping/hyperactivity. But it is a trial and error thing to get the right one.
I also have a very snotty kitty and we have gone through multiple cycles of antibiotics. It might be worth your while to have a culture done on the kitty so see if they are anti-biotic resistant. (That is becoming more of a problem in shelters). But it will also tell you what (if any) antibiotics will work for her.
I have found that Zithromax (Z-pak in humans) does wonders for snot levels. But it is only available in a human pharmacy and it is about twice the cost of the Clavamox (at least in the DC region).
I was thinking it might be the litter that she is sensitive to, not sure what you use.

Sometimes going with one of the bio-degradable litters will reduce dust and tracking significantly.

Sorry I'm slow to reply, I don't have Internet and my phone is maxed out. I have to wait until my roomie gets home so I can mooch off his cells WiFi.
He was using something in a bucket. I'm using the green boxed litter from Costco.
What is a natural litter? I'm not well educated in cats.

Natural litters are things made from pine, corn, wheat, etc. These can be recycled but the good thing is they are much less messy than clay litters. You can get them at any pet store, but I don't think they have them at Costco.
Well, if yer a teensy bit strapped for cash, no worries. But.... might be something to consider when yer flush. Cat snot is gross but I don't believe it's fatal :D

i have a friend who has the same problem with his persian, he says persians are known for it, something i never knew, i have no answers really, but right now my cat is using flumax, which has the lysine in it, it's after her dental surgery as she is a flu carrier, even though vaccinated yearly, when stressed she can get a mild dose, i have to say so far so good, its been five days, there was a couple of sneezes but thats all and she seems to be responding, however it is expensive, cost me 42 dollars for a bottle ,although the bottle is large and lasts in to 2016, im in NZ ,but im sure there is an equivalent where you live, might be worth asking about.

A vast majority of shelter cats or cats "on the street" (some experts dare to say about 90% of them) all have either calicivirus or herpesvirus. Herpesvirus can transpire as an "upper respiratory infection" that seems to come and go. Once they have been exposed to the virus, they have it for life, though symptoms may wax and wane or you can go years without a flare-up.
RARELY do cat allergies transpire as runny eyes/congestion. In dogs and cats, environmental allergies/food allergies/allergies in general transpire as skin related issues... ears, hot spots, chewing feet, with cats you may have hair loss/scabbing because of scratching around the ears/neck, etc. But rarely will allergies cause congestion like you're describing.
If you haven't already, PLEASE consider getting a second opinion from a different vet. There are a lot of options available to you, from minor stuff like using Viralys during flare-ups to even more major like nose biopsies.

I'm going to give the Viralys a try. The shower steam didn't work at all for her at all. On the + side, she is having less and less snot with the new food. She sneezes daily, but there is only snot maybe every few days, and she snorts a lot less. I'm hoping the better diet gives her the immune boost she needs with the Viralys to help her feel better.

Hi
iv recently found out that dental health problems are the main cause for cronic sinus infections, animals cant relly tell us if they have underlying dental issues.
But also our pets are becoming too ill nowadays many dying from cancers, allergies etc etc, this was all unheard of before the 1970's.
Vaccinations on our pets is a massive fraud to keep profit hungry pharma companies and vets in a well paid business, but thats finally being exposed.....
www.petwelfarealliance.org/vets-on-vaccines.html
www.canine-health-concern.org.uk/ScientificData.html
Some links to some sites run by vets and animal lovers and who are trying to expose the dangers of yearly vaccinations forced on our pets by vets (over half their annual income is from vaccines alone - the vets pay approx £1 per vaccine vile then charge us up to £80 odd!! ), No scientific data to justify the vaccines saftey but tons of scientific data to show the reasons NOT to vaccinate!
Symptoms will show 3 months after the injection (enough time so the vaccine is not the suspected cause), This ensures you revisit the vet with yr pets new illness so their profits are boosted even more at our expense and our pets health / life.
I know its a bit hard to digest but people need to know this because we are unknowingly destroying our pets health and happiness by putting our trust into a corrupt system - thankgod there are still some vets out there who put an animals welfare before profit.
I would stop vaccines ASAP and then visit a holistic natural medicine vet who knows only too well why our pets our suffering in mass numbers today, they will treat and undo any damages caused by the vaccinations.
No illness is incurable, its just kept hidden so corporate profits are reached.
Hope this helps and good luck to you
Ronnie
p.s please share this info with everyone you know who has pets, this is the only way we can put a stop to the awful injustice forced against our silent pets

I find all this very hard to believe. I am a human being who knows I inherited my allergies, etc., it did not stem from any vaccinations I received as a child. You can trace certain allergies of mine back right down through several generations on my family tree!
I know vaccination science has changed over the years, science is discovering new things all the time. And yes, some pets do develop vaccination site cancers, but most do not. It is a complicated subject.

i suggest you do your research, iv provided 2 links which contain all the scientific data, veterinary experts along with doctors who are all stating the dangers, if you cant be bothered to look & research and justify your ignorance towards the matter then more fool you and feel sorry for your pets ..GOD SAKE DO IT FOR THEM AT LEAST!! what are you scared of??
Here are 3 snap shots from a page on one site showing a small selection of qualified scientific data illustrating the dangers of vaccines and dr quotes......

We decided to go the L-lysine route. She gets a pill twice a day. I crush it up into a spoon full of wet cat food. Cam gets some wet, but the unspiked one, as she was so angry the first time I gave just Gwen the wet.
Hopefully we'll see a big difference soon. Luckily Gwen doesn't care at all about her snotty nose, and sometimes I can tell its really uncomfortable. Shes the happiest little kitty :D

Visit the 2 links i provided and the scientific data and facts from qualified doctors and vets will help you to believe!
Research and take responsibility for your health, dont blindly accept all that the info we're given from those with power over us, no illness / allergie is inherited through the family generations, Please google a free ebook by Dr Hulda Regehr Clark, (Ph.D.,N.D) 'the cure for all diseases', which explains the reasons for so called inherited illnesses and it is far from passed down the family like a gift!
I have provided links and documents to provide proof to what i am telling you, so before replying to me that im 'mad' or mis-informed' please also provide some foundation to justify yr reasons. You can not judge me without knowing or researching the matter at hand, it would be absurd to do so, and is the attitude of immiturity.

Your deluded, to say a snotty nosed cat is happy and not bothered by his condition shows your bond and unspoken communication skills with him are warped and clueless, the senses of taste and smell are the most important to felines, they smell their food and if they cannot smell they dont eat! amongst other important factors concerning those senses.
Do any of you actually dig deep and research any of the pets you own?? or do you assume you know all there is to know through diluted 2nd hand / third party myths and and no personal effort to educate yrself 1st hand?
Bet you state how you love your animals whislt gorging on plates of buthered meat produced from heards of terrified animals slaughtered along with their young children..lamb? dear oh dear

Now there, pickled78, Digi is a long-time member here, and has been a responsible pet owner for a very long time. Her username is based on her rescue pup who she prepares special food for, as the dog has food allergies.
Just because a creature -0 cat or human - is sniffly does not mean they are miserable! I can only speak to my own experiences as a human with allergies - when I was a sniffly kid I was perfectly happy with life most of the time, using extra tissues didn't bother me. My asthma was more bothersome, but now, as long as I take my medications, it is no longer an issue either.

Here is the blog I did of the whole thing with Digi. I still cannot read it as it upsets me to this day as I don't like thinking about that time http://digi-king.blogspot.ca/ I have to monitor Digi to this day as it still takes a tiny drop of anything that comes from a cow to set her off. Luckily I have learned how to spot the early signs of an episode coming on, so I'm able to prevent them from becoming anything more then a little vomit and some runny poop. I drove 4000km this summer for a week long vacation with dad. The dogs (Digi & Charlie) had the whole rear of the hatchback, as I converted it into a very comfy area, even with them buckled in (seats down). Spoiled rotten :D
I have to travel to a special butcher I built a relationship with, as they handle Digi's food with extra caution as they know how sensitive she is. Metro and No-Frills chicken is contaminated with beef. All this doesn't even go into what I had to go through to help Digi become mentally stable after her terrible neglect and abuse when she was only 5 weeks old! Took months and years working with her to turn her into the lovely dog she is now.
The kitten has been on antibiotics, seen 3 vets and it keeps coming back. They all ruled out Herpies too. So I came here to see if anyone else had a snotty cat, cause the ONLY info online is for Herpies. So far the diet change has helped, there is a difference. Its too soon to tell if the L-lysine is helping, as the whole point of it is to boost the immune system that causes Herpies to flourish, which also helps with the sinuses. I'm researching other immune system boosters to see if they are kitty safe too.
Is it too late to mention the turtle rescue and the insane amount of work and research we are always doing? lol :P
Its time to go stab 6 sick rescue turtles without getting bitten, and to catch the one that I can hear running about in the hospital room. I'm so happy she is finally well enough to move again. Poor girl hadn't come out of her shell in a week as she was in so much pain (meds only help so much) and sick. The older boy didn't make it. He was skin n bones and full of infections. His eyes had healed and he was eating, so we thought ther was hope. I'm sure it was his organs that gave out, poor guy.
The L-lysine is working! She's been sniffling and sneezing a lot less and there hasn't been any snot in days now. There is still a little snot in her sinuses as I can hear it, but even that is less often.
We're so happy to notice the difference! Hurray kitty!

l-lysine is awesome stuff! I've also had good luck with adding FortiFlora to my snotty cat's food...it seems to keep her immune system in top form. (My snotty cat is snotty from herpes, so of course results may vary! ^_^ )

YAY!!! I am SO glad to hear this!!! We tend to have favorable results with this in the viral kitties like I talked about in my first comment on here.
Don't listen to the nay-sayers. Some people are just rude, rude, rude. If you want to be heard, don't start insulting people, for crying out loud.
While there is a movement for less vaccines, your pets STILL NEED THEM, unless you're running titers every year... and titers DO run out, they don't always last forever!!!! I have yet to see a cat develop these symptoms from vaccines, as again a vast majority of them happen in shelter cats who were largely found on the street or owner surrenders because they have a large feral cat population, etc..... IE, cats who have most likely never been vaccinated.
Cat allergies do not manifest as sinus congestion. They just don't.
You CAN see sinus congestion with other issues as mentioned, like dental disease... but I'm sure if Digi's cat's teeth were *that* bad to cause issues like this, she would know.

Our rescue's vet (she sees all our pets too) is one of the best, as the OSPCA uses her for their animal cruelty case investigations. Her hubby works at the zoo, so I'm not worried she or the other 2 vets missed anything.
Gwen's mother & litter mates do not show any signs of Herpies, nor are any of them snotty. Gwen was in a small shelter/foster in a private home, not a city shelter. Gwen was born like this at that shelter. Shes lived with Pacasso for nearly a year, and he doesn't show any signs of it either.
We're just happy this stuff is working :D
