View Full Version : Saying goodbye to Malachi :-(

It's with a heavy heart that I said goodbye to Malachi today. :( I feel like I failed him somehow. I knew when I adopted him that he did start life out pretty rough and was the runt of the litter. He's always been on the weaker side, but was a great companion for Phinehas. It seems like he took a sudden turn in his health in the matter of a couple of days that there just was no coming back from. Both he and Phinehas suffer from chronic upper respiratory problems and the doctor thinks that his body just finally gave out fighting it which caused him to go into liver failure. We could have tried to treat it, but the doctor didn't really give him very good odds and I didn't want him to suffer any further. I'm just so sad and hope Phinehas will be ok. :(

How terribly sad. Kitties like Malachi are nearly on borrowed time. You loved him, and for that he was blessed.

I love that picture of him! Thanks for finding it and yes, he did grow a bit more into the ears! :) It's been a hard couple of days and my husband just doesn't understand, so it's nice to have people who know why we are so attached to our furry family members. Thanks for the support during this difficult time.
Here is Malachi shortly after we moved to Indiana when he was healthy:

He was a beautiful cat and he had a good loving home with you where he felt loved, safe and wanted.
Sorry about your loss, we all wish our animals could be with us forever, not to be, you gave him all you could while he was with you --RIP Malachi.

I received a card from my vet yesterday and they had included Malachi's paw prints on a piece of paper. It made me cry all over again. Really missing him and feeling bad for Phinehas. :(
Karen,
Poor you and poor Phin.I Sure wish that there was a magic wand to fix everything. Mia is sitting on the computer desk right now, I am so grateful for her. I know that you are going through agony honey and I am SO sorry for your loss, so very sorry.
We got a sympathy card from my vet as well when we had to put our cat Fred down and it made me feel even worse as well. Take your time, one does not have to put a time limit on great loss. What a beautiful cat Malachi.

Thanks all for the kind words. It's been a hard week adjusting to our now quieter home. Phinehas has been glued to me nonstop and has been sleeping under the covers with me at night. I know it's going to take some time to adjust, but wanted to see if there was any advice in terms of helping a grieving cat and also when the right time would be to possibly add another companion cat. I know I'm not ready just yet, but would like Phinehas to have a kitty companion to cuddle with sometime in the future.

It is hard, but when the time is right, your heart will know, I promise. There is no set time when one should get a new kitty - everything is variable including your heart, Phin's needs and the rest. We'll be thinking of you!

Karen, I'm so sorry for your loss and sorry that I haven't replied to this thread sooner.:( Malachi sure was a very unique cat. I remember playing fetch with him. RIP sweet boy.:( Please take care. (((HUGS)))
As Karen already said, you'll know when the time is right to let another cat into to life. I wish you good luck in finding a companion for Phinehas.:)

Hello everyone! Gosh, just reading through this thread again brought me to tears. I wish we could have done more for Malachi and I still think back on the course of events and wonder why I didn't notice things were off sooner. :(
It's been several months now, and I think the time is right to try adding another oriental to the family. I remember before I brought Phinehas home, I came on here with anxieties of bringing home a kitty and I'm feeling the same way now. Phinehas has been very clingy ever since Malachi left. I found a women (who is also a vet!) who breeds and shows orientals and has a female cat that she has retired and wants to place in a home. This cat is 4 years old and has a dominant personality which I was a little concerned about because Phinehas also has a dominant personality. I gave a full description of my cat and our home/lifestyle to this woman because I want to make sure we're making the right decision for her and for us. She has reassured me that her kitty seems indifferent to males when it comes to dominance, so I hope these two get along. Phinehas is a cuddler, so I was hoping to get another cuddler. Oddly enough, I've never had a female cat - so not entirely sure what to expect! We'll be meeting her this Sunday in Dayton at a cat show, so fingers crossed things go well with the addition and transition. I'll open another thread once we bring her home.

I hope things will go well when you bring the new cat home. I am so sorry about Malachi. I had a similar situation when my cat developed a sudden tumor and the vet didn't give a good prognosis for recovery if I proceeded with surgery. I am always wondering what I missed symptom wise. Malachi knows you did the best you could for him and he remembers your love. You are honoring his memory by giving another cat a good home. Best of luck with your new cat and may you always have warm memories of dear Malachi. Malachi is always with you in spirit.
