Do you remember the Great Pyrenees rescue my parents adopted? He has fluid in his chest (Pleural effusion) and they don't know the cause. He has had an ultrasound, but the area around his heart was too hard to diagnose. Tomorrow he is going to the same specialist who did Killian's liver ultrasound. Bandit will be undergoing an Echocardiogram. If that is inconclusive, than a Spinal CAT scan will be ordered for next week. Please say a prayer for him.
Again, I really, really, really should have been a vet.

Bandit is back from the echocardiogram which showed an irregular heartbeat. He will be having a 12 lead ECG done later this afternoon. He now has a team of doctors working on him. He is carrying about a half a gallon of liquid in his chest. There is no diagnosis yet. The tests continue.

It isn't looking good for Bandit. They are fearful that there is an inoperable tumor near his heart. The specialists will be seeing him again tomorrow to put a tube in. They have also ordered a monitor to watch his heart (like a Holter) from Florida which won't arrive for two weeks
They said that if this problem wasn't discovered, he would have been dead in two months. He may still not make it. They are not sure what the cause is.

Thank you for your prayers. We do need a little miracle here. All the best vets are team treating him. They are doing whatever possible for him.
Today the catheter was placed near the heart and the readings were taken. (I'm not at all sure what I am talking about here. I am not familiar with this area). Yesterday they said that if the reading was in the 80's or less, it was not good. The readings yesterday were in the 80's. Today's test was 90. The 90-100 range is not good, but not horrible like in the 80's. Like I said, I don't know what I am talking about here because it is from what my parents told me, I was not there to ask my 1000 questions as usual. So, the tests continue. Monday some results are expected in. They got a little more fluid out of his chest again today. They can't treat him yet because the team of doctors still doesn't know what is wrong with him. He has difficulty breathing at times.

Oh my, what a terrible thing to have happened to this guy when he has finally lucked up on a loving family. Sometimes life just doesn't seem fair. Good that he has caring Vets who are giving it their all to try to save him and parents who love him enough to try as well. Miracles do happen. I hope that Bandit is the recipient of one of them.
Sue, I remember your initial posts when your parents first adopted Bandit and the pictures you posted. This is just so sad. I know that Bandit couldn't be in better hands and that your parents are doing everything they can for him. I certainly hope this is something that can be treated and will hope for a better prognosis. I know you are wishing that you weren't learning so much about veterinary medicine. First Killian, then Gaylord and now poor Bandit. {{Hugs}} to your parents and you as well.
I'm so sorry Sue. I've still been thinking about Bandit... Killian, Gaylord and Shiloh too.
Between the wonderful vets and everyone here sending the sweet boy good vibes, I think he'll have a good chance to pull through.

Oh Sue, how heartbreaking! Poor Bandit! And your parents must be so stressed out and worried. I am anxious to hear your report today.
Why will it take 2 weeks to get the monitor from Florida? Is there no way to get it to Bandit faster?
Precious Bandit remains in my thoughts.
Sudilar
12-16-2002, 09:46 AM
Souraya, I guess there are only a few dog heart monitors in the country and it will take that long to get it to them to use. I'll update as soon as I know anything.

Tomorrow is a critical day for Bandit. Today they are doing an abdomen ultrasound to see if they can find anything there. If not, than tomorrow they are going to physically go in and look around. The surgery is dangerous in itself. I will be with my parents and Bandit for the surgery. I can't tell you how hard this is on them and me.
They are not going to bother with the monitor now. I think they are looking for a tumor (maybe around his heart). However, they are still not sure what is going on. As it is, he cannot survive like this. Please, please, please pray for a little miracle. He really needs it. He is too young and hasn't had the "good life" long enough. Thank you.
Dear Sue, Bandit, your parents and you have my prayers that your team of doctors can find the problem and bring Bandit back to good health.

Only a miracle can save Bandit. He has two tumors, one in the chest and one in the abdomen. His chances are not good. Tomorrow the specialist will be operating to see if he can remove them. If he survives, then chemo will be attempted. The doctors are not optimistic. However, if a miracle should happen...........

Ok, he made it through the surgery!! This weekend will be critical for him. He is in intensive care. They sent out the biopsy and will be awaiting the results. The surgeon mentioned a possible problem with the lymphatic system. The specialist will have more info for them tomorrow, late afternoon.
So far we have had a little miracle, he survived the surgery, now we need the big one, a benign biopsy report and a treatment for his problem.

ANOTHER LITTLE MIRACLE!
Bandit was sent home to my parents to recoup!!! They said he would do better at home where my doting parents will take good care of him!!!!! However, my Mom just called and said that his incision is red and she had called the doctor about it and is awaiting word. I told her not to worry. It's probably ok, but of course she is worried.
The power or prayer is at work here, Friends. We are seeing little miracles. In about a week, they should have the results of the biopsy. That is where a big miracle is needed. I do believe in miracles!!

I am so sorry that I didn't post until now. Sue, I know how loved Bandit is by you and your family. I sincerely hope he is feeling better and he will live a long and healthy and happy life, and that the tumors are not cancer. I am so pleased at the outpouring of love that you have received from this site. I think that helped him through the surgery and helped him get well enough to recover at his house.
I will continue to send Bandit good vibes and positive energy. Give him a hug for me and thank your parents for being so dedicated and spending what sounds like a LOT of money to get their friend well and keep him well. Your parents sound like wonderful people, and Bandit was lucky that they adopted him, rather then another family.

Mom and Dad went to drop off the patch. They were told that it would take at least two weeks for the results of the biopsy, that it was a mistake to say the results would be in within a week. :( The surgeon will be back in on the 6th of January, so the results should be in by then. More time to bite our nails down to the quick. However, Bandit is looking good and I hope to have some pics of him developed soon.

Tomorrow, Sandra!!! Woohoo! He has complications from his neutering and they did more surgery on him. He'll have an e-collar for two weeks. Did anyone notice that I attract the sick ones??? Is this a hint that "I shoulda been a vet????" again and again????? sheesh!
I seem to attract the sick ones too Sue. In fact, I have no hope of finding Peka her forever home because she's so sick. Maybe you'll end up with your third this way too ;)
I can't believe we have to wait so much longer to find out the test results. I will continue praying and sending good vibes.

My parent's Bandit's vet called and said he will try to find out something sooner on the biopsy, if he can. :)
aly, there is a reason why we get the ones who need special care. :)
Foster Bandit is here. I will post in his topic. Uh oh.

Any hope of an earlier result??? I've been wondering about him. Good thoughts still on the way for Bandit #1

Molly, the results are in on Bandit #1.
He has a rare congenital lymph system abnormality. It is so rare that they aren't even sure how to treat it. (I'm guessing that it is so rare because dogs die from it at an early age without it being diagnosed. If it weren't for Bandit's trip to the ER vet office for a fractured toe and my Mom asking about his breathing, would they have ever been referred to the specialist to find out about his potentially deadly problem. They said that if he had not been treated, he would have been dead in one to two months. Bandit's home vet gave him cough medicine for the condition.) Talk about miracles. They are going to start treatment with Roten ?? 3000mg. 3 times a day! . If that doesn't work then there will be steroid treatments, but that has too many side effects. They want to try Roten first.
In two weeks, his stitches come out and they will be meeting with the specialist to see if the treatment is working and what to do next.

So what's the prognosis?? It sounds like your parents are great parents to Bandit and he's lucky to have them. I sure hope the Roten works. I'm a little confused though, what exactly is the condition and what does it do?? It makes the chest cavity fill with fluid???

Molly, it's very frustrating to be getting the info second hand when my parents don't ask the right questions. I want to know why, how, what......exactly. My parents don't know what it is called (and that would be my first question) and since it is rare and there are extremely few cases to compare it to, I don't know if there is a prognosis. They are going to try things. As far as I know, so far, the chest cavity fills up with a lot of fluid. I don't know if that is all that is going on. The lymph system is malfunctioning. Hopefully in two weeks, I'll find out more. I will volunteer to go with to the vets and see if I can get more info.

I would take the diagnosis with guarded optimism Sue. Hopefully after the next vet visit you can get some more detailed info. After that you can do a little more investigating on your own. I'm SO relieved to hear that it was not a malignancy. Yes, so many conincidences conspired to see that Bandit's illness was discovered in the nick of time! Hopefully the medic. will start to give him so relief. You all have been through so much...I hope the tide will start to turn for you, your family and all the furkids very soon! {{{hugs}}}

Sue,
Bandit will stay in my prayers. I agree it is very frustrating
to only get small answers to the questions in your mind about
what exactly is causing Bandit's problem. Hopefully the tests
will reveal more specific details & that boy can be made healthy
again. I hope you get to go with on next visit to with the Vets
and maybe they can answer more questions & offer more
help for Bandit. Hugs & prayers from Liz & Moki.
