I can't seem to catch a break with my cats. This morning Alani was trying to use the litter box but nothing was coming out.:( He did manage to make one tiny pee drop. He was also licking himself down there and seemed to be in pain. Although he ate his breakfast, he later threw it up. I knew he was either partially blocked or totally blocked so I took him to my vet hospital asap. Luckily they're open 24 hours a day because they're also an emergency hospital. Yes, he's blocked and is now in the ICU for probably the next few days.:( I'll visit him later today and hopefully find out more. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

Oh no, poor Alani. :( I remember how Fister struggled and had to be catheterized several times before the big operation. I hope something can be done and Alani will be OK. Perhaps a strict diet.
Give him some kisses from me when you visit.

Thanks Randi.:) He only eats grain free dry cat food and gets chicken broth at night. Both Alani & Blaze don't do well on any canned food that I've tried giving to them. They love it but it gives them diarrhea.:( The vet mentioned about putting him on a urinary diet probably one of the prescription ones which have horrible ingredients and then end up making cats fat. Storm was on a few and they never really helped him and just made all of my cats fat.:( My vet is also working today so this vet was going to talk to her and I hope to have more food options available to me. I would like to stick with a grain free diet if I can.

Thanks everyone.:) I just talked to the vet. She said that he has a lot of struvite crystals and he some how did some damage to the tip of his penis possibly by biting or licking it a lot. It may have scar tissue so I need to be prepared in case he needs PU surgery. His blood work looks good. I'll be visting him later today and I'll be talking more to my vet about him tomorrow.

I hoep Alani heals soon!
Cole is on a hypoallergenic food, but both he and Oscar were on the MediCal SO (urinary) dry and wet before that and had no problems. It was Cole's arthritis in his back legs that contributed to his weight gain, not the food. With Metacam he has slimmed down some.
Prayers for your beautiful fluffy boy!

Thanks everyone.:) I went to visit Alani and he's wearing an e-collar and resting comfortably on several towels and fleece fabric too. When I pet his head he started purring very loudly and it almost sounded like he was snoring. They are giving him sub-q fluids and he's on pain meds and antibiotics. To me his output didn't look very good. They hadn't even changed his urine bag yet and there was very little in it and it's blood tinged as well.:( For the tip of his penis to become so bad, he must've been licking himself without my knowledge for quite some time. Maybe even having the other 5 cats around was enough cause him more stress which contributed to his blockage. I received an estimate for PU surgery if my vet thinks he needs it. I know it's expensive but I think that it would actually save me money long term. If he blocked again then I'd basically be paying the same amount that his surgery would've cost once again just for him being in the ICU for a few days. I just want all of this to be over and Alani back home again and happy and healthy once again. I think that Blaze also misses him.

Thanks again everyone.:)
I finally heard back from my vet. Alani is doing well. He's well hydrated and his input and output are good. His problem now is the damaged tip of his penis. Since he'll most likely develop scar tissue there if he hasn't already and also most likely block again in the future, we both agreed that doing the PU surgery was the best option. She'll be doing it some time this afternoon and she said that he'll probably be able to come home some time tomorrow. Please send some positive vibes his way. Thanks.

I understand totally what you are going through right now. Joseph ended up in the emergency vet on September 8th with crystals. I am still working with the vet to clear things up. Right now he didn't get the PU surgery, but I might have to consider it in the future.
My problem is that he doesn't like the SO food. I make a homemade diet and he will only eat a little bit of the SO food.
I can't catch him to give him any of his meds or even get him into the carrier...

Thanks again everyone.:) It's been a long busy day. My vet called me around 4pm and said that everything went well with no complications. Alani was just starting to wake up and they would later see if he would eat some food. I asked her if he needed to be put on a special diet and she said no that I can continue to feed him what I've been feeding him. She said that his problem was that his parts were just too small so this is why he became blocked. I remember my RB Storms surgeon saying that Storms urethra had such a small opening that it was only a matter of time before he would become blocked. I'm going to pick him up tomorrow after work. I have a large dog crate that I'm going to keep him in until he gets heals up and gets his stitches removed. Now I just have to prepare myself for the shock of the huge vet bill.

Thanks again everyone.:) Yes, he's now home and here's the story:
Yesterday was pretty crazy. I knew that Alani would need a different type of litter so I went to Petsmart and bought fragrance free feline pine litter so I wouldn't have to go after work. Well I found out that I can only use either crystals or the newspaper type of litter. After work I then had to go home first and get the feline pine litter and then go back to the store and exchange it for newspaper litter. Luckily it was an even exchange. Then I went to go pick up Alani. He's doing very well and is very alert for a cat that's on pain meds. I didn't get home until almost 9pm and they gave him his clavamox and pain medicine there so I didn't have to worry about it last night. I have him in a large dog crate in my bathroom for at least the next 7 days. He's already gotten out of the soft e-collar as well as the plastic e-collar. I have to be sure that the plastic e-collar is on very tightly. Last night when I got home, I had to put a few things away so I put his carrier in the bathroom for a bit. When I opened the door a cat ran out of the bathroom and down the hall way. I thought that some how Blaze had gotten locked in the bathroom. No, it was Alani. He had gotten out of his carrier and e-collar. Then I caught him and put the plastic e-collar on him and I decided to look at his incision again. There wasn't one because I had caught the wrong cat! It was Blaze! I had to take the e-collar off and then find Alani. He was in the cat room ready to run under the bed. He did but he ran under and out the door so I closed the door and tried to catch him. He was running all over the place. I finally caught him and put the plastic e-collar on him but he later got out of it. This is when I knew I had to double loop it and make sure it was on very tight. So far he's now kept it on. He didn't want to eat very much this morning he mainly wanted lovin's. I hope that everything will go smoothly for the next 7 days. He needs to be seen again on Tues. at 9:30am.

Aside from money, the main reason I couldn't get the PU surgery for Ming was that the care for him would have been extensive and with my work and school schedule at the time, there would seldom have been anyone home to care for him and watch him. My vet put the cost at an astromomical amount for this surgery. I hopy your vet is cheaper.:)

The care really isn't that involved but I've had many sick or cats that required surgery so I'm used to providing this kind of care. He's on pain medication for 3-4 days and on clavamox 2 times a day until it's gone. I have to keep his e-collar on him at all times but I do take it off while he's eating and I'm supervising him. I also have to make sure that his incision looks good and if not then he needs to be seen asap. He also needs fluids. I'm giving him some canned food and hoping that he won't get diarrhea from it. I'm also giving him large syringes of water by squirting them into his mouth. He doesn't seem interested in his chicken broth yet so I hope to also be able to give this to him when he feels a bit better. I also have to keep him away from the other cats in his own room so he's in the bathroom confined in a large dog crate that I bought many years ago when Storm had the same surgery. I work full time so there's no one to check on him during the day but so far he's kept his e-collar on and he sleeps during the day as do my other cats. Yes, it did cost a lot but it was still cheaper to have this done now than for me to keep bringing him back because he blocked again. Storms PU surgery was actually much more expensive and his was done many years ago. I had to go to a board certified surgeon so the cost was probably double of what I just paid for Alani. I do pay for the care that Alani received because he got round the clock care so I feel that it's worth it. He's doing much better today and eating much better too.:)
Thanks again everyone. Things are getting better.:)

Alani is doing very well.:) He went to the vet for a recheck yesterday morning and she said that he looks great. He has dissolving stitches and some have already dissolved. My vet wanted him to continue to use the yesterdays news type of litter for a few more days so he's still staying in the dog crate in the hall bathroom at least until Saturday. I know he's lonely in there but soon everything will be back to normal.:) Luckily my vet didn't charge me anything for is recheck. She wants to see him again in 6 months.
