teaching dog to heel

can anyone help me with teaching a dog to heel when your out on walks? i've found one webpage and they don't explaint it to clearly. if anyone could help - please do :D

Hi prima,

What I've been doing with Oz that really seems to work,
is to hold a treat, like a hot dog, right by my left leg where
I want him to walk. I start out on my left foot, say Heel,
then as he's walking next to me, I give him some of the
treat and tell him Yes. 2 things I found... One, is that you have
to keep the treat low enough so that he won't be enticed
to jump. And two, make sure you give the treat as you're
walking. Don't stop and and then give him the treat, because
then he won't associate being rewarded for walking
beside you when you say heel. When I do finally come to
a stop, I say Sit, then he gets a treat for sitting.

I know there's lots of other training techniques out there,
but this way has really been working for me. And I had
problems with Oz not wanting to walk on the leash when
we first started, but he'll do just about anything for that
hot dog or cheese.

My dog has this issue where when I try to get her to "sit" after heeling, she will walk to the front of me, turn around, and sit down. She doesn't just sit beside me and "look adoringly at me" like I want her to. Should I ignore this or attempt correcting it? My mom has tried, but to no avail.

Oh yes, also... Phoebe is such a hog, she LOVES food... This is a problem when she knows I have treats, which are the only way I can get her to do anything sometimes. She will bark CONSTANTLY if she knows I have a "pupperoni" or a "breaf bluster" (as she calls it). :) Is there any way to stop it without getting her a shock collar, because I think she would probably hate me forever if I did that to her...she is so sensitive.

You dont even need to resort to a shock collor so forget that for the moment how old is the dogs your training??? does the dog walk in front or behind you?
