View Full Version : Oh my gosh I have puppies!

They are fosters, actually, from the Michigan Humane Society. They have been calling me quite a bit lately asking me to foster, but they only seem to have sick (bordetella dogs and/or upper respatory infections in cats) so I have not wanted to foster any of those sick animals, for fear of infecting my own furkids. Today, however, they called me hoping that I would foster two ADORABLE 7 week old australian shepherds who need to be socialized. I was thrilled to take on that assignment :)

The red merill (sp?) is a male and is named Saph, short for Saphire because of his stunningly blue eyes.

The red pup is a female and her name is Ellie. She has one stunning blue eye and one gorgeous brown eye.

They are absolutely adorable and their smell...oh my gosh. Not only does their breath smell amazingly good, but their whole roley poley bodies have the most delightful smell to them. They are puppies threw and threw :)

So I will most likely be keeping them for at least a week or two, until they are social enough to adopt out. At that point, MHS is going to put their pics on PetFinder and so the new prospective owners will be coming to my home to meet them, after they are approved. It's going to be an exciting but sad time. I know that I am goign to fall in love with these babies. I already have. :)

Here are a couple of photos, and the rest are HERE (http://www.imagestation.com/album/?id=4291055231&congratulation_page=Y)

What cute, cute pictures. No wonder folks fall in love with puppies! They look so perfect too! Remember, you are doing one of the most important things in their lives, socializing them, and then you are going to send them off to spend the rest of their furry lives in a nice home with someone who will (hopefully) continue your socialization and love. Consider yourself their pre-school teacher!

It is so great of you to take these guys and show them the ropes!

SAS;)

What a clever way to put it Sallyanne! Leslie we know these little cuties will have a ball during the time they spend with you, Graham, Kersey and Minion. Gee, they're even going to get a lesson in living with a feline! ;) They will be well rounded little sweeties, that's for sure! I don't think I would be able to get anything done around the house. I would be picking them up and cudding them all day long! Kudos to you and Dan for giving these pups a good start.

Well I must say, Minion is none too thrilled! I had to move his litter box into my office because it was in the basement where the pups are now. He held it, refusing to go downstairs, even though the puppies are in a puppy enclosure. For the first time ever, Minion is really mad at me. He won't even eat this morning, but I have no doubt he'll perk up in a day or two. His litter box is now in my office, so he does not need to go downstairs for anything.

Graham & Kersey are less then thrilled, too. I told them that it's just temporary and that the pups would not be here long, and they are certainlly not staying. They'll be better soon I know.

More later, I think the puppies just knocked down the baby gate keeping them downstairs

Of the two, Saph is my favorite, too. He is so extremely cuddly and he's so gorgeous. They both are, but I am a sucker for the blue and red mural colors. He is also a bit more outgoing then Ellie. They are both very friendly and they both follow me around, but Saph more so then Ellie.

I can see now that it's going to be tough parting with them both, especially that little Saph boy. We are really bonded already. I played with them for about an hour this morning, and they were so wiped out that they dropped down and fell asleep on my feet. Then I picked up that little Saph and he nuzzled his tiny little head on my shoulder and I listened to him breath for about 45 minutes. Bliss. Yup, it's going to be hard to part with them :) I am head over heals in love with them both.

The red female reminds me so much of Kimmy's Kia. She really has similar colors and she has that stunning blue eye. I am going to PM Kimmy and see if she wants to come over and meet them. The more people that interact with them, the better off they will be, and I know Kimmy will LOOOOVE them.

Something really terrible happened at the MHS last night that made my heart break, and immediately made me cry. About 10 minutes after I got there, there was a dog that was hit on the main road, just in front of the MHS. She was a dobie mix of some sort, and she was a stray that someone probablly dumped off hoping that she would find her way to the MHS. By the time they brought the dog in on the stretcher, she had been struggeling to breath and I saw her seize and die. I was with the director of the foster adoptions, and she and I both mourned over that dog, but I could not hold back my tears. It made me so angry that anyone would let their dogs run without a collar and tags, and this poor dog died without her family or any familiar faces. It made me hug my three beautiful furkids extra hard when I got home. What a shame and a waste of a precious life :(

But good did come out of that day, I got my little bundles of puppy breath and I am having a great time with them.

Oh...I have to add that Kersey has adopted the pups as her own :) Graham still does not like them much, but Kersey LOVES them and enjoyes their company thoroughlly. She's such a sweet girl. She has been playing with them as if they were their own children and I am delighted at her mothering instinct. I'll get some pics of them playing and interacting later.

Leslie,

Oh my gosh..... they are sooooo Cute !!! What a terrific
thing to do. Fostering those sweet babies.:) Isn't it just
awesome to think that you are helping to shape their
personalities. They should be very well socialized after
spending time with you and your furgang. Tell Graham
not to worry, he's still number one around here.LOL.:D

Those puppies are so cute! I have a friend who owns a blue merle Australian Shepherd who is named Merlin and he was the cutest little roly poly puppy like yours.
That is interesting that Kersey likes them so much. How old was she when you adopted her, did she have a litter of her own before you got her?
Also, what breeds are Graham and Kersey, do either of them have Aussie in them?
I feel bad for Minion, I guess 2 more dogs are a bit much for him, maybe next time you should foster kittens.:)

Ellie probablly has a home. She is still going to be a foster because she has some more socialization to have, but her potential new parents and the skin kids will be coming over tomorrow to meet her. They deffinatelly want a girl, so Saph is still unspoken for. He better get adopted soon, he's a charmer! He's extremely cuddley and affectionate. Gosh, he better get some bites soon! He's a heartbreaker!

Vermontcat: Graham is an aussie mix. He's the fella who is not thrilled about the puppies. Kersey is a German Shepherd/Rottweiller mix. She was spayed before she had her first heat, so she has never had a litter of pups of her own. She has really taken to these bundles and I can see her getting depressed when they go. She's attached to them, too. We can both cry together :)

I have some more pictures :)

It's a bitter-sweet day. The potential owners came over today to look at Ellie. They had their heart set on a female dog but when they met Saph, they are having second thoughts. They have never had a male dog before and they just assumed they were going to be getting a female, but that little Saph put his charm on and they began asking me what the difference was between male and female. I can see them strongly thinking about making Saph their first boy dog. I am thinking about the day when I will be parted from these angels and it does give me mixed emotions. Sigh.

Anyway, here are some more pics of my bundles of adorableness :)

I have to admit, Saph stole my heart as well. For some reason the merle coloring is so appealing to me. Congratulations on your fostering, Leslie. Thanks for sharing those pics. Hannah says to tell Graham that if he wants to take a time out from the puppies, he can always come stay by her. heehee

Oh my gosh! What cuties. I could never do the foster parent thing because I would become way too addicted to the dogs and wouldn't want to give them up. We'd be broke because of animals that I would refuse to let leave my side, LOL! I think it's great that you are willing to do this though for those animals! You really got a cute bunch this time!

AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Those puppies are SO cute! I just can't get over how it! lol. I have a *thing* for red dogs and blue eyed ones (obviously ha ha).....I want one of those puppies!! :D I've recently developed a love of Aussies.....well, I mean I've always thought they were gorgeous dogs, but now that I've met some personally I just love them! There's a lady who does Australian Shepard rescue around here, and she brought in 3 dogs to be groomed a week or 2 ago. I just fell in LOVE with two of them (the 3rd one was really cute too but I didn't get to spend as much time with the old guy because he didnt like the other ones). One was a blue merle male, brown eyes with a blue speck in one. The other was a female...entirely white except for a gray splotch on her hind end and side. She had blue eyes. The female was blind in one eye, and also deaf. You'd never know it though, she was a total love bug and followed me everywhere! Those two were COMPLETE velcro dogs!! I was so sad when they left! I don't think I could foster, I'd get too attached...I was attached to those 2 aussies after only a few hours!

Oh, Leslie!! I am so behind on my reading and I missed this post until this morning!!! :D What beautiful babies they are. And what a wonderful thing you are doing by fostering them. You will miss them, but you'll have the pleasure of knowing that they are going to wonderful homes. I've only fostered a couple of times, and I was terribly depressed when they left, especially Splash, who was here for a month, but knowing she is happy and loved makes me feel so much better.

I kept 3 little puppies (5 weeks old), overnight, this past Friday night. Oh, the puppy breath was wonderful!! Scott got pictures but hasn't downloaded them yet. I'll share their story and pictures as soon as he does.

Have fun!!

Well I know that it's going to nearly kill me to rehome these puppies because they had to stay overnight at the shelter last night and I can't pick them up until after work tonight :( . I have not been able to think streight without my little bundles of love.

I was planning on bringing in a stool sample, since I suspected giardia in the pups, but I saw my heart pup, Saph, sneezing a few times and he coughed a couple of times and then he sneezed out a big amount of puppy snots. Last night I took them to the Humane Society to hopefully get them on antibiotic before they got worse, and before my dogs caught whatever they had, but their vet leaves before I could get there, so I had to leave them overnight so the vet could treat them today.

I missed them so much last night and I was heart-broken when I had to leave them there, after they were so bonded to me. They cried as I left and it ripped my heart up into pieces :(

Oh my gosh what have I gotten myself into????!!!! I am in love with them, especially Saph. I tried not to bond with them too much, but it's awefully hard when they are so sweet and adorable. Not sure if I'll be able to foster anymore. Don't know if I can handle this like a rational thinking adult.

That's EXACTLY why Mike and I don't foster. We've tried twice and we got Vonney and then there was Bailey that ended up costing me my relationship with the local SPCA. We just WAY too attached. I admire you so much for what you're doing though. Ellie is my favorite. She is a minature Shawna.

Shawna is really pretty! Is she an aussie or a tri border collie? Either way, she's lovely. I know that these two of mine are going to make beautiful full grown dogs. I think Ellie will look a LOT like Shawna. Between Shawna and Kia, I kind of have a good idea what Ellie will look like as an adult. They are both so lovely :) I sure do hope I can see pics of them both when they are full grown. Who knows, maybe Saph won't get adopted and I'll get to keep him

That is the problem with fostering, from the adorable cute pups to the old beyond years neglect cases, it rips your heart out when you have to give them up. I can see that happening with my older sick guy...... The ones who adopt him better be pretty special people. Same with your pups. Always remember, the more dogs you foster, the more lives you save.

Seems like there is a pregnant dog that needs to be fostered in the rescue I volunteer for. Uh ohhhhh, there will be puppies............

Both Graham and Kersey get vaccinated yearly for bordetella. The vaccine, however, is not a guarantee against the virus. There are many different strains, so it's possible they will still get sick. Sofar so good, though. Unfortunately Ritz, my mom's shih tzu, has it now :( He has a vet appointment tonight. Cassie was vaccinated against bordetella, but Ritz was not. Sofar Cassie is not showing any signs, but it's hard to tell with her, because she coughs all the time, but it's due to her illness that she can't shake. :(

Hope all will be feeling better quick. As a pup, Shiloh had kennel cough and was pulled into fostering or else they would have pts her so as not to spread the disease to the shelter. Thank goodness for a lady named Mary with 5 GSDs, a large amount of land and a kind heart for GSDs.

Killian and Shiloh do not get the Bordatella shot at this time. That scared me about bringing in a foster. Killian gets nothing that is not an extreme necessity because of his liver. Shiloh had kennel cough when she was a pup and the vet thinks that she probably has the immunities in her system. However, next year, they will be getting the vaccine, as I will continue to foster.
Gaylord did not spend time in animal control. GSD rescue was called before he even got there and pulled to boarding at the vet. So it is not likely that Killian would be exposed to any harmful diseases. Compared to Gaylord, Killian looks the picture of health. My poor Gaylord.

Good luck to you, Leslie and the pups!!

Like I've said plenty of times on here before, that's exactly why I won't foster dogs. I'd get too attached and not want to give them up. They are just to special not to get attached!

Taggert had kennel cough when my mom got him. Both my girls had been vaccinated about a month before, but Cincy got it anyway. Sadie did not. At my mom's house Oreo got it, who had not been vaccinated, and Dazzi did not (she had) I think it is easier for young or old dogs to pick up regardless of vaccination. Hopefully this will hold true and Graham and Kersey won't get it!

Hugs to all the pups!

Well my heart pup, Saph, is going to his new home on Tuesday :( :) Mixed emotions overload. As of now, Ellie still does not have any bites yet, so she's still available **subliminal message....did you hear that, Mugsy?**. I am a little worried about Ellie. She is EXTREMELY active and she's also very, very smart. Almost too smart for her own good. She is an excape artist. She can easilly climb out of her puppy enclosure as well as sucessfully knock down the baby gate. She can easilly climb up and down the stairs and she is just so independant. She is not into being held or cuddled, and she just does not seem to be terribly concerned about people. Whenever anyone picks her up to hold her, she immediately starts wiggeling and whining. She is SO active, and SO much more so then Saph. She can hardly stand to sit still for any amount of time unless she's sleeping because she is so spunky. Also when I have them outside for a potty, I almost always have to "trap her" by quietly sneaking up to her when she's not looking. Otherwise, she runs away from me and she won't come back. She's going to be such a handfull. I am worried about her because of that. She is also by far the dominating puppy of the two.

I am worried about her. I hope she will grow up to be a good dog and not be too much trouble, otherwise she's at risk of being turned back into the MHS :(

Saph has a fantastic life ahead of him. He is going with a super nice young family with two little girls. They are wonderful dog people and they recentlly lost their dog of 15 years. They were looking for a female pup. They really didn't think they had any interest in a male dog. They have only had girl dogs so they were sure they were going to pick Ellie until they met the pups, and Saph is so much more cuddly and adoring, and he's so much more mellow and tolerant and dependant that they chose Saph to be their first male dog ever. Saph was actually playing with the little girls, and he was VERY tolerant of them holding him, while Ellie went off to do her own thing and she squirmed and whined when the kids tried to hold her for any amount of time. At first, the mom and dad were worried about having a male pup because they were so used to having female dogs, but there was no question, Saph is going to be a more cuddly, in-your-face and under your feet, mellow, layed back, submissive dog and that is exactally what they wanted. I went and bought him a going away gift basket with a bunch of toys in it last night. I am going to dread seeing him go, but the new family promised me that they would keep in contact, and they also said that once Saph is fully vaccinated, I can meet them at the dog park with my pups and we can have an occational reunion. They also said they would send me pics of him while he's growing up, and when he's fully grown. I am so excited about his family. He is going to be so happy.

Now I have to work on that little Ellie. She is one fiesty little thing!

Let me talk to Mike. We were going to go down to Indy and get Highway, but we waited too long and she has a REALLY long list of interested families. Mike was going to get her for me for Christmas. Gee, we don't know ANYTHING about alpha girls!! lol Sox and Jessie would give her a run for her money. The escape artist thing may be a problem. Has anyone contacted agility people or people who have sheep and need a herding dog who will also be able to protect the flock?? Just a thought.

Nebo was completely independent. He HATED to be held, he would run away, and well, he was downright mean sometimes! He was a HORRID biter (hard!) and could be quite dominating to other dogs also. After giving him some adjustment time to get used to his new family, puppy kindergarten and just letting him grow up---he's a marshmallow!! lol He no longer really dominates the other dogs...just really wants to play...he still sometimes gets in his "moods" and will bite (not nearly as hard as before) but most of the time he is a good boy!

I guess my point is, don't be too quick to judge Ellie. Some pups start out fiesty, but that doesn't mean that's how they will be as adults necessarily.....give her the right home and some training, and I bet things will work out!

Hi AdoremyDogs!

Vedy cute puppies!

I'm gonna ditto what wolfq said, because when I first got Oz
he was just so active he could care less about being petted and
cuddled. Oh what a difference a couple of months made. My first
human instinct was "man he doesn't like me", but I started trying
to win him over by doing what he liked best, which is play. Oh
my gosh! he's changed so much. He still loves to play best, so
he'll come nudge me with his toy, but he also comes and nudges
me with his nose to be petted and to sit in my lap or just to be
close to me. Never dreamed he'd turn out to be so loving based
on the initial meeting.

Congrats to Saph on his forever home!!!

Cincy was also very independent when we first got her (and to some extent still is) it has only been inthe past few weeks that she likes laying on the couch with me better then the floor alone and only since late last week that she suddenly wants to sleep in the big bed with us and Sadie.

Very sad day...Saph and Ellie had their recheck appointment at the vets today, and they were deemed healthy enough to get adopted out. Saph's new mom, dad and kids met me at the Humane Society and they took him from there. Now I just have the lone little Ellie girl. I knew it would be hard to lose him, but he is going to a great home. His new name is probablly going to be either Riley or Pippin. They can't decide between the names.

According to MHS, Ellie will be going on Petfinder since she is almost over the kennel cough.

Here is a pic taken last night. It's amazing how much bigger they are now. You can't really tell from the pics, but Saph was 6.5 pounds when I got him and Ellie was 6 pounds. Now Saph is 11.4 and Ellie is 10.5!

This is exactly the way Hannah was as a puppy and because of it she was very difficult to raise. The people who adopt Ellie will need to look for her attributes which are there but sometimes overshadowed by such challenging characteristics. This is the kind of dog, like you say, who is highly at risk of being returned if the right home is not found. But she can also be heart dog to the right owner and Hannah is a prime example that determination and patience can pay off and a little devil puppy can mature into a Princess.

Leslie, Your little girl sounds like a perfect candidate for a working home that does agility and obedience training. In the mean time you need to establish yourself as her alpha. Start by making her understand she needs to listen to you in order to get her food. This is a tremendous motivator to a puppy to get them to realize that the human is the one who you listen too. She will be a great pup with the right home. Let me know by PM if you have any questions.

Please give Graham and Kersey hugs for me too!

YIKES! & ACK! How far behind am I??????? Well, Les..you just went up another rung on my loveladder!!! Bless you for fostering and loving. I think that is awesome... (maybe some day) My heart melted at the photo w/Kersey and the pups, just precious! Extra hugs and kisses to my..oops..your Graham for his patience..what a trooper.... Cody squirmed and whined and fussed when I held him too, it nearly broke my heart. He was such an alpha dog, I thought all was lost. You have WAY more experince than me, so I know things will work out with Ellie. Candy, what a shocker to read your food advise, cause I did that with Cody without realizing what I was doing (   )Now the big galoot wants nothing more than hugs, cuddles, kisses, rubs and tries to sit on my lap (I kinda like my intestines where they are). Wonders never cease with me,,,,

Candy, I have been working on Ellie's dominence stuff quite a bit. She is doing better, but she has to go to a very active family who is experienced in dog psychology and I am going to strongly recommend obedience, flyball and agility as options for her mind and her spunky energy. Hopefully she'll go to someone who plans on getting her into those fun sports, and someone who understands how very intelligent dogs need to keep their minds active in order to be well rounded adult dogs. I'll be sure and warn the potential adoptees about her spunk.

I don't know if the experts would agree, but I am of the opinion that this type of dog has the best chance of success as an only dog and with a guardian who is fairly knowledgable about what they are about to deal with. Even though we made it with Hannah, who had a much older sibling who tried her best to mother her, she really wanted to assert her little Alpha personality over Tizzie which just added another issue to the mix of raising her.

Well she's really good with Minion. Curious but not overly pushy in the slightest. Minion is an exceptionally tolerent guy, though. He never raised a paw to the pup, nor did he growl or hiss or anything. Ellie sees no threat whatsoever in kitties since Min is so easy going and he's so dog friendly. Ellie is on Petfinder now, as of last night, and someone is coming to see her tonight from Holland, Ohio.

Ellie is officially adopted to a very nice, very active young couple who came all the way from Ohio to adopt her. They had been looking for a red tri female aussie for a long time and Ellie was love at first sight. I warned them of all her typical aussie ways, and they are thrilled to take on the mission of raising a happy, healthy Ellie! Her new mom is a jogger and her new dad is into obedience and especially frisbie! He's going to do obedience and disk dog training with Ellie, and the wife will take her on her daily jogs once she is ready. They have no plans on having kids, and they plan on making Ellie their new child. Tonight is my last night with Ellie, and tomorrow I am taking her to the Humane Society where they will meet me and they'll take her from there.

It was hard to see Saph go (who is now named Riley), but Ellie has worn out her welcome :) I love her, but I am not terribly sad about her leaving. I know that I will miss her, but I also will breath a huge sigh of relief. Puppies are a LOT of work, especially when they are spunky like Ellie! And I feel great about the homes that both of my babies got, so I am quite confindent that they will never know abuse or neglect. They will be spoiled and adored, as they deserve to be. Both puppies' new parents promised to keep in touch, and send pics of their growth and development. I also asked both of the puppies' new parents if they would please let me know if something goes wrong and they can't keep the dog for any reason. They both assured me that nothing like that would ever happen, but they'll keep in mind what I said.

I am not sure how Kersey will react, but I imagine she'll be devistated. I know that she'll get over it, because I'll be paying extra attention to her and Graham when Ellie is gone.

They asked me if I would take a Kennel Cough infected, 79 pound chocolate labbie boy over Christmas and New year, but I think I'll pass, unless it's life or death for him. I'll let you all know if I take on that big fella, but odds are not likely...I need a break :)

I'm glad Ellie has found a good home and that you are getting a well deserved break! I have asked people about fostering before and how you can let dogs go, and I was told, some dogs you just know aren't going to be a dog you are even tempted to keep, even though you want the best for them. Sounds like this may be the case, and the way it worked out. That is great!!!

Like Staci, said, maybe we can get them to go to the Dog Park...if not Findlay, BG would only be about 20 min for them.

Yes, both pups are doing great! Riley's new family adore him to pieces. They call me often to give me updates. They are really doing all the right things in his socialization and they have signed him up for his first obedience class already. The mom is a stay-home mom and there are two beautiful girls, one about 6 and one about 8 and the dad is a real sweet heart, too. A wonderful family and Riley (Saph) was extremely lucky to have landed himself in such a good home.

Ellie still has the same name, because her new mom and dad loved it. She is doing really well and her new parents have called once and sent me an email with a few pics attached. They adore her. They are a young couple who have no desire for children (at least for a long while) and they said that Ellie was their child...their first born :) She looks REALLY happy in the pics! When I'm back to work again (I had the week between Christmas and New Year off), I'll post some of the photos of Ellie, and maybe I'll have some new pics of Riley by then.

Thanks for asking about them. I do miss them, especially Riley.
