View Full Version : My foster

Gaylord is my foster.
He is 7 yrs. old.
He weighs about 70 lbs. when he should weigh about 100. He is all bone.
He is almost as tall as Killi.
He was kept outside.
He had a tumor removed (results aren't in yet). He may have HD.
He is sweet. He loves to have his head petted and behind his ears. He's a leaner.
He loves goodies. He loves getting some of Killi's homecooked in his bowl, too.
He rides well in a car.
He is a magnificent black and red GSD. When he puts on weight, he will be gorgeous.
He is getting along ok with Killi and Shi, so far, gotta watch.
I am worried. The vet said maybe HD. Don't know what rescue will say.
Please pray that all will go well for Gaylord. Fostering sometimes hurts.

So, what are you afraid of with the rescue? Do you think they'll say put him down if he has HD?? Please say they wouldn't do that when there are things you can do and dog will be comfortable. Gaylord is really a beauty and you've done a wonderful thing. Please let us know when the results come back.

Molly, I'm afraid what will happen if the tumor is cancer and it is also HD. The rescue seems really caring, so I'm hoping they work with it. (Praying that it is not cancer or HD, though.) If he has the surgery done, I won't be able to foster him, I have stairs all over the house, everything is up one stair, three and four and then 13. I've also got pesty Killi and Shi. Pray that we won't come to this.

Did you try the aspirn to see it that helps him?? I hope and pray that everything comes back negative.

We are giving him aspirin and amoxicillin (boy, I'm gonna have to watch whose pills are whose!).
He is such a sweetie. He talks when you pet his belly and head. He is such a love! You should have seen them all waiting for their turkey to be divided!! Three big GSD heads poking in the doorway, I love it!!
Killi gave him a side push and nothing happened (except that he almost knocked him over)! Shiloh and Gaylord had a few words, but nothing happened. So far, so good.
Sue, I feel your pain. I've had 3 geriatric fosters this year with health problems too numerous to even mention. I am going through the fear right now that my current foster may have to be put down. I will be praying for Gaylord. One thing's for sure, he sure landed himself the best foster home available! What a lucky boy :)

Working on a roll of pictures. He is adorable. He is so loveable. He reminds me of my first GSD when he 'talks'. He is a big talker. He can also howl. A firetruck and ambulance went by when we were coming home from the vet and he howls like Killian then, it turns into a yelp-howl like Shiloh. Hehehe! He certainly has won my heart! He also loves food, any kind. LOL Now Killian eats all his food with no trouble. This is a good thing!! Shiloh still does her bark at him.
Wow, he's made Killi play AND eat?!?!! Thats incredible. What a little miracle worker :)

This poor baby. What else is going to happen to him. He is just a love, though.
Friday we went to the vet to have his drain removed from the tumor. It wasn't visible, so the vet cut one (or two) sutures to see if it was pushed inside the incision. This morning, I woke up to find his tumor incision wide open!! I took him to the Emergency Vet to restitch him. She said she wanted to clean out the incision, too. So the poor baby had to be put under and restitched again. He is really sewed up and now has to wear an E-collar. His stomach looks terrible and I know he is uncomfortable because he keeps looking for a spot to relax in. I can't keep him in his cage because he doesn't fit with his collar, so I am baby-gated off in the family room with him. Shiloh is whining because she can't get in here. He won't sit still and I am directing him from running into things. I am exhausted!

Oh Sue, you are getting broken in as a foster parent real fast. I'm sure Gaylord appreciates all the loving care he is getting. He did land in the right house alright. What a plus that he is *encouraging* Killian to eat. I thought there was a possibility that might happen. Let's hope and pray that this will be the end of Gaylord's medical problems.

Well, we had a pretty decent night. Since I've been sleeping with Gaylord in the family room since day one, I was glad that after his extreme up and downing, he finally calmed down and slept. He is getting better with the e-collar, but he still needs to be followed around. Almost bumped into the tree in the yard  ! He eats very well, well he scarfs down his food is what he does. He gets some of Killi's food, so Killi also scarfs down his food. Killi is eating well now, too! LOL Shiloh wants to be with Gaylord, but I can't let her accidently bump him. I have to put warm compresses on him a few times a day, too. Again, he is such a beauty. Everyone at the ER vet ohhh and ahhhh'd. Except that he is sooooo skinny.
Haven't heard anything bad about the tumor yet. If he needs hip x-rays, I will send him up North to have them done because they do them for the rescue very reasonably. Good. We won't worry about that yet, until he completely recovers from the tumor and neutering surgeries. Poor boy.

I don't have a digital camera, so I'm working on using up a roll of film to show you what this poor skinny baby looks like. Everyday I tell him that I love him. I wonder if he has ever heard those words before? No wonder his leg is hurting. They kept him outside all the time with not much people contact, I'm sure. He loves to be petted and rubbed. He just talks and talks (just like my Wolf would). Shiloh will come over and groan and talk back, too. He is such a love. I can't wait til he feels better. We go to the vet again tomorrow, to see how the stitches are doing. I'm going to see when the vet thinks that he could have x-rays taken. Then I'll send him up to Skokie to have it done. The aspirin doesn't do a thing for him. :(

How many times have I told all of you how much I appreciate your love, concern and prayers for my furpups. Not enough! Thank you all again from the bottom of my heart.
Gaylord had a bad night last night. I wish he could talk and tell me exactly what is wrong. I know it was his leg and I also think it was his stomach (aspirin). I stopped giving the aspirin to him starting today. It isn't helping him any. He goes to the vet today and I will ask when he can go for his x-rays. He needs that leg fixed soon. My heart is breaking and I'm exhausted. All three slept with me in the family room. Gaylord started whining then it went into a full blown howl (pain? or did he hear something? I didn't.) Shiloh joined him. G/L is still wary of Shiloh. He gives her his little groany growl when she gets too close to him. Killi tried playing with him yesterday, but he is in no condition to play. Will update after the vet visit.
I should have been a vet. (sigh)

Back from the vet. Stitches still holding up good, no fever, dehiscence repair (notice the new word) looking good.
The vet says that there is pain in the hip and in the knee. The rescue said to try Rimadyl for two weeks to see if it helps. She seems to think that maybe he injured himself by falling down the icy stairs at the house she picked him up at. When she had seen him the previous day, he was walking fine. So we are going to hope for just an injury and not HD or ACL at this time. If this does not work than we will try something else.
Good thing I am a canine liver disease Mom, so I will be at the ready to observe any liver malfunctions while on the drug. He is on a lower dosage. Wish him luck that this is just an injury and the Rimadyl will do the trick.
Today I really had to laugh. When we brought Gaylord back from the vet, Killian brought him a toy and did a slight play bow and did a little bark at him. I haven't seen him do that in a long time!!!! Apparently G/L does not know how to play because he just stood there and looked at him. Shiloh is still not sure of him. She likes him and then she barks at him. She just can't decide!

Update:
Gaylord has had a reaction to the Rimadyl. He has been vomiting all his breakfast and then some. Now he is off that drug. Can you believe this is happening to this poor boy? I can't tell you how bad I feel for him.
The Leonberger Rescue lady was looking for someone to adopt a 9 year old female with separation anxiety from the West Coast. I had to turn her down, being that I have Killian, an elder, and pain in the wiggle-butt Shiloh, who would pester her too much. 9 is old for a Leo. She said she would keep me in mind for a younger male or female or for fostering or adopting.
Some good news (maybe). G/L was supposed to be at an adoption event in Northbrook (far from me) today. Since he is not well, I declined bringing him. A grandmother lady who does not work came to see him at the event. Instead, he was home, puking his guts out. She has my number and will give me a call to possibly meet with G/L. :) :( If I feel she is a good match, I will be happy for Gaylord. He needs a certain type of home. She sounds like she may fit. BUT, we'll see.

Just spoke to the possible adopter. Sounds like a wonderful woman! G/L would have a great home. She has previously been owned by 5 GSDs in her past. She will have him with her always (except when she goes to Germany). Now, we've got to fix that leg and get him to meet her hopefully on Sunday!
Tomorrow I will have to run all the way to the vet and get him some different kind of medicine for his leg. I sure do hope that it helps.
It's going to be hard to let him go, when the time comes, but if he goes with this woman, I will know that he will be in good hands.
When the woman was told that G/L is skinny now, her granddaughter started laughing.......and said just wait til he gets home with grandma, that'll be fixed! A lady after my own heart!
Please, please pray that his leg heals and it was nothing more than an injury. We need a little miracle here.

Okay, prayers on the way for Bandit, and for Gaylord - named after the great pitcher Gaylord Perry perhaps? I hope his leg gets better quickly.
A beloved person we know took in a 6-year-old Newfoundland with bad hip displaysia. When we first met the dog "W", he had to be picked up to get in and out of his new mater's truck. Thankfully this friend is a big guy, so it wasn't a problem. The people who actually owned the dog knew about the HD, but didn't want to pay for the surgery, and now, 6 years old is getting up there for a Newf, so the vet didn't want to chance surgery now.
Well, when we saw "W" a year later, he hopped out of the truck on his own, and romped! and played! in the yard with the other dog. Just for a few minutes, but what a change. W had lost 30 pounds, and gained a lot of love and care, and that made all the difference. He runs with a rolling gait, but to see him play just made my heart leap for joy! HD need not be a death sentence!

Yes, Karen, HD isn't a death sentence anymore. I think there are four kinds of hip surgery out there now. Since his tumor was benign, maybe they'll consider surgery for him. He is such a sweetheart. This morning when we dropped him off for x-rays, he growled at the other dog in the office. The cat was ok.
Last night was another rough night. He kept me up from 2-3:30. I took him out four times and that wasn't what was ailing him. After that, he slept. Thank goodness.

Bad news. Gaylord has HD in both hips, the left being worse. :(

What are they going to do??? Please don't tell me the worst ok?? Will you keep him then? Will that lady still take him??

Molly, I don't know anything for sure yet. I picked Gaylord up when the rescue lady was at work and I didn't get a chance to hear what they intend to do for sure. She did say maybe the cheaper surgery would be an option. She will get different meds to me, too. I am to bring him to the adoption event on Sunday still.
The vet said to be sure he does not walk on stairs. (That will be hard, I have stairs everywhere. He will be restricted to the family room, foyer and front room. It will kill him not to come into the kitchen when Killi and Shi are there or come up to my bedroom (however since I got him, I've been sleeping in the family room with him). Poor boy.

Just a thought, but, have you considered getting ramps for him to use on the short stairs area???

I feel so sorry for Gaylord :( I wish him well.... Is there any other option other than surgery? :( We'll keep him in our prayers.... I hope he's not in so much pain and discomfort :(

Oh Sue! This news just breaks my heart. Poor Gaylord!
Perhaps a ramp would make it possible for him to come to the kitchen? Or maybe you can let Killi and Shiloh hang out with him in the family room so that he doesn't get lonely.
Gaylord is in my thoughts. Please give him a big hug and lots of kisses from me.

Sorry Sue, this is so late, altho I have been trying to catch up.
Of course my 1st thought was how lucky G/L is to be with YOU! I too echo the thought of his being such a good influence for Kili. I honestly never even knew a dog didn't know how to play.... Shi has 2 males to contend with? What's her secret (lol)
The Codster's been on Rimydal 2x a day since October for HD and artho in his knees from ACL surgery :( It was a tough decision but
really helped him a lot, altho I watch him like a HAWK! Breaks my heart. Ascripton worked too, but C was suffering a wee too much for my liking.
I've been meaning to ask you forever..what signs should I look for for liver disease? He's due for blood work in 2 weeks..I'm taking no chances. Hell, I go blood work for Celebrex
Grma sounds like a dream come true....lots of attention and loving...OO I hope she works out. The poor, sweet boy deserves a wonderful life after leaving you. I'm cursing the previous owners. What is wrong with people???? Saving grace is that there are people like you in this world.......
Love you lots....

So you and Gaylord will be at the adoption event Sunday? Is it still "northern"? If so....could you tell me place and time so we can try to attend?
thanks

Karen, Rimadyl does work wonders on some dogs. I'm so glad Cody gets relief from it. Here are the signs to watch for:
As soon as your dog begins Rimadyl therapy and during the entire time he takes it, watch for the following symptoms, all signs of potential life-threatening reactions to the drug:
loss of appetite
refusal to drink
unusual pattern of urination, blood in the urine, sweet-smelling urine, an overabundance of urine, urine accidents in the house
vomiting
diarrhea
black, tarry stools or flecks of blood in the vomit
lethargy, drowsiness, hyperactivity, restlessness, aggressiveness
staggering, stumbling, weakness or partial paralysis, full paralysis, seizures, dizziness, loss of balance
jaundice (yellowing of the skin, mucus membranes and whites of the eyes)
Blood tests should be done every few months.

Oh YUCK! How nasty! So glad the vet told me to get Cody's blood work done every 3 months. So far, so good. Geez, I hate so many meds, so dangerous, yet so necessary.
How's Gaylord doing on the Ascripton?
Cody's starting to lumber up and down the stairs and we only have 5 up and 5 down and it breaks my heart. He used to be a speeding bullet. Poor innocent angels.
Lots of schmooshy kisses to all the furkids...

Karen, Ascriptin isn't doing anything for him. He still holds his leg in the air and does not use it. I am waiting for different meds and news on how they want to handle this.
It's been mentioned on another BB by a vet that there is a new medicine coming out now instead of Rimadyl. Anxious to hear about it.

Today my first foster was adopted by a wonderful stay-at-home grandmother who will take care of my sweet baby as well as I could (I'm sure)!!!!! A deal was made to have hip surgery done. I can't believe it!!! What a lucky boy. (I was ready to foster him long, long term... sniff, sniff). The nice lady met my approval!!!! Live long and well my sweet Gaylord. We all will miss you.
So as not to get too teary-eyed, I've been given my next assignment:
Bandit (what a coincidence!!!!!), a 5 1/2 yr. old male GSD. His people are moving to Florida and cannot take him with. Their reasons are legitimate, they really can't. He lived in a heated and carpeted garage. He is described as a "good dog". He is ball and toy happy, but not thrilled with car rides. I can't wait to meet him. Shiloh should just love him. (I hope.) Killi will guide him. Bandit should come into our home right after Christmas.
More good news, remember Petey, my first almost foster who tried to take off my nose??? Well, now he is training to be a K-9 with an officer already!!!! Woohoo. I am so glad for him. (Just hope I never meet him again so as not to lose my nose!!)
More great news!!!!!!!! I met Sara (Edwina's Secretary) and her husband!!!!!! What a wonderful lady!!!!! I am soooo glad to have met her. We were able to talk a little in between all the activity. Edwina couldn't come visit, though, you know, doggie germs and all. Hahaha. Hope to see you again, Sara. Give Edwina a little head scritch for me!! BTW, wasn't Gaylord gorgeous???

Gaylord has a "Sue approved" foster Mom and home, he'll be having his surgery and a new dogger foster is on the way! Now I only ope and pray to God that YOUR Bandit pulls through. And how wonderful that you got to meet the lovely Lady Edwina's Mom and Dad!!:) So wonderful to have a happy update. BTW, Star***Shine and Cody Girl would much appreciate a Killi update!;) Paws crossed! Love and hugs to ALL!! What a fantastic job you have, and continue to do!! Love ya TONS!!!! Killi does so well in a fostering environment. I did not have one moment of lack of appetite! LOL He cleaned up his bowl and went over to check if there was anything left in Shiloh's and Gaylord's bowls. I just can't believe it! He even ate doggie goodies (which he really doesn't care for)! I think he gained some weight! Hahaha. He even ate his wrapped up pills with no complaint. He was very good with G/L. He told him in doggie words that he was boss, but he is a nice boss. G/L respected that. At times they would even sleep next to each other. Shiloh, on the other hand, wanted him to play with her. He would just look at her. They did enjoy howling together, though. He let her lick his face a few times and they sat face to face many times. After the initial getting used to each other period and barking and barking at him, she actually liked him. They will also miss him.

Molly (incognito) LOL!
No, I probably won't be seeing Gaylord again because the lady lives way up north and it takes over an hour for me to get there. (unless grandma brings him to an adoption event, but I don't know how far away from the events she lives either!) She did say she would call me and let me know how he is doing. I feel that he is in good hands with her. Thank goodness!

What wonderful news, Sue!! Gaylord will be loved and cared for, and now you have room for another. You have been bitten good by the foster bug!!! And good for Killian!!! Isn't it interesting that having another dog, other than Shiloh, in the house perked up his appetite. Hope he will keep up the good work.
I know you enjoyed meeting Sara too! I'm envious!!! :)

Hahahahahahaha!!! Sandra, good one!!!!!! You don't know how happy I was to hear the news!!!! The rescue lady told me yesterday and went over to tell the director, too. We were all so happy. My husband always said that he thought that Petey could be trained. You go, Petey, get those criminals!!!

I can attest to the fact that Gaylord is a BEAUTY!!! Such great coloring and sweet as pie. It was also neat that the granddaughter not only helped grandma find the dog but was sitting there petting/tending the dog while grandma did her paperwork! He will be greatly loved I'm sure.
Great meeting you and your husband Sue! It's not so bad "Up North" now is it?????

Sara..... funny, it looked just like the southwest side!!! hahaha! What a drive, though. The events in Northbrook are going to take me 1.5 hours each way and I won't even go to the Rockford events!!!!!
I've been thinking about Gaylord a lot. When I do, though, I think of him sitting comfortably watching grandma. Shiloh keeps looking out the patio doors for him.

Just finished the role of film and will be taking it in to be developed. Can't wait.
I heard that Gaylord is doing well in his new home, so far. I told the rescue lady that if he doesn't, I am willing to take him back to foster again!! LOL
Well, nothing like jumping in again and real quick (hubby isn't too happy, wanted to wait til Christmas was over)! We will be meeting Bandit on Saturday morning. If all goes well, we will be picking him up to join us on Christmas Eve.

Congratulations on a successful first foster and the positive effect he has had on Killian. It will be interesting to know if Killian continues to eat well now that Gaylord is no longer there. Congrats on meeting Edwina's Secretary too. Maybe there will be some event out here in Kane County to lure one of you in this direction. (Geneva's a nice place to do some Christmas shopping.)
Can't wait to see those pictures of Gaylord and also to hear about Bandit.
