if your dog or cat has had heartworm you have to goive it a pill a month or else they will probably get it again.

Our beagle, named Sassee, had heartworms and was tested clear just recently. :)

She had a mild case, it only required one overnight stay in hospital, another shot 2 weeks later, and 2 weeks after that the test to be sure she is clear.

The pill each month is what she will be doing. There is a shot that can be given covering 6 months, but some breeds can not handle the shot. :( Check with your vet if you would like to pursue the 6 month shot. We will be seeing if our Eli and Ginger can handle the shot.

Even if they haven't had heartworm, they should still be on preventative. Its VERY important because the treatment is a painful, slow process. Some dogs don't make it through the treatment. None of my dogs have had it, but I have fostered shelter dogs and taken them through the treatment and recovery.
