When I volunteered for a shelter, we'd flick the ticks off between the prongs of a fork!

Even carefully extracting the tick with tweezers will make the wound tear slightly, particularly if the pet doesn't like staying still, and the wound may become vulnerable to secondary infection. The artical should also say to keep an eye on the wound! :)
