I KNOW I should be happy, I know this is ultimately what we want for them, but I feel so sad right now. I don't know if you guys remember Toshi, he was the Shiba Inu Mix at work..he's been there since before Christmas and I LOVED the little guy. He was annoying, he was a pain, he was all of the above, but he improved SO MUCH, he changed so much and to be a part of that was a good experience. I got so attached to him and I KNEW this was inevitable and that he'd leave sooner or later. He left yesterday and I barely got to see him Saturday. I know I should be happy, but why do I feel so bad? I cried just now thinking about the little cutie...

He's SO handsome and I'm sure he's got a great home. I just miss him. :(

Does this line of work ever get easier?

Aww - he is such a cutie. And your story is exactly why I can't foster or volunteer, or even visit at the local shelters. I even try to avoid the PetSmart adoption center when I take Sparky in to be groomed. I would want them all!
Try to be happy for him - he probably got a wonderful furever home. :)

But that will open up a spot for another dog who needs rescue, and it IS a happy ending, I promise!

Yes that's how I look at it too Karen; another two of my fosters have been adopted with a home visit due for a third. Haggis and Brenna are adopted and Pompom is on his way after the home visit:( I will miss them all so much but I already am expecting another shih tzu in the coming week and I am sure there will be more to follow. Each one takes a little of heart with him/her but the love multiplies and we know they are happy and cared for ! Cheer up Allyser  You will find more dos to love I promise even though you will remember the past ones with fondness!

When I first started volunteering at the shelter (and I don't even work closely with the animals) I often got tears in my eyes when animals would go home. They were happy tears.
Then there are days like yesterday. We had FOUR dogs returned in ONE day!!! I've never seen that many returned in a month! But this is how I look at it.......at least they are back at ARF where we will find them another home, hopefully the right home. One little dog came back yesterday and was adopted within two hours.
Just keep in mind they are finally getting their much deserved homes. :)

Thanks guys! I will bounce back, I just wish we'd be able to see my little man again. He was such a cute little dude. Had I had my own place, he would have been MINE in 5 seconds. I know being sad is pretty selfish but I just got attached as I always do and I feel like its always going to be hard when they leave..He's a dang good dog though and I hope he has his forever home now.

I took Mikey for a little hike today and it made me feel better. :D I am lucky to have him if anything!

Lilith, I hope you foster many more and I hope your current little one get their furever home :)

Cindy, that is TERRIBLE!! I remember when I used to volunteer they had 2 returns in one weekend, we were all very sad but the dogs got adopted again soon after so it always seems to work out for the best :D I hope all four of them get adopted soon :( It's so sad to see them leave but even sadder when they are brought back.

I honestly don't know how I didn't cry over more dogs when I used to volunteer at the SPCA. It was probably because I've known Tosh for awhile now and got to know him. I fed him dinner, I played and romped with him, I squirted him when he was bad, I let him chew on my arm, I've yelled at him...ahh the memories..:p That little boy is gonna give someone a BUSY life for sure!

I get pretty attached to them too. Karmella who was at the shelter for almost a year got a home recently and I miss her bunches but she is doing so well. Just be thankful he got a home. You will get attached, but letting them go on to a new home that will love them just as much is a good thing. You can always ask them to send pictures or come by for visits. That's what we do. We get so many pics back and Karmella is doing well. Do you work at a shelter too? :) The hardest part for me is seeing them come back from an adopter who you thought was wonderful. Memphis the hound was returned 3 times and I LOVED her. She finally got a good home in 2010 but I felt so bad for her. It confuses the heck out of the dogs. :( There have been so many I wish I could take home and there always will be so just enjoy your time you do get with them.

Krista, I work at a doggy day care/boarding kennel. My boss takes in dogs from various area rescues as fosters though. :)

We adopted Toshi a week ago and couldn't be happier! He is a really sweet dog. We are spoiling him and he is adjusting very quickly to his new home here on Long Island. He used to be afraid to walk far on the leash, but just today and yesterday he took a 1 mile walk with my husband and I. We recently lost our 2 Siberian huskies so now the house is not so lonely anymore. I can see why you miss him, but remember he seems to be very happy now and we can see that he was well taken care of at your kennel because he seems to be a well-adjusted dog. My daughter and fiance visited yesterday with their small dog (Toy Manchester Terrier) and he got along with everyone just fine! I will keep you posted now and then on his progress.

I realized he was happy after I saw a few pics of him in his new home. :D He did look extremely happy and to see him playing and on a BED made me extremely happy. I knew he was happy, it's just that I kind of got attached to him and as you can see it's not hard too ;) I am so glad he's adjusting well and he can bring you some companionship after loosing two dogs. That must've been so hard. I am really happy he found a great home, he deserved it after the rough start he had and after being up for adoption for so long. :D

Thank you so much for posting this!
