I have to say I had many different feelings while reading your tribute to sweet Smoochie. Did the person who broke her back by slamming the drawer on her just abandon her at your shelter? How heartless! As a longtime volunteer for rescues I know accidents can happen - we do take care during adoptions though to try to choose families without young children as many cats have been harmed (including fatally) by kids (usually accidents but often lack of supervision). I was thrilled to see that your shelter has given Smoochie the love and care she deserves and pray that someone will adopt her into their home. Bless you and long live Smoochie.:love:

[Killer Kitten]

Smoochie's back was broken at 6 weeks old. The family had a toddler, the toddler decided to slam a dresser drawer shut just as the kitten decided to jump out of the drawer and the accident happened.

The family waited a week to see if she'd get better, when she didn't they took her to a rescue in Akron. The rescue rushed her to a vet, but with spinal injuries the first hours are critical and the damage was done. She stayed at the Akron rescue until she was 4 1/2 months old. The rescue was small and the woman who ran it was facing a hard decision about Smoochie - her window of cute kittenhood was closing and nobody had expressed any interest in a paralyzed kitten. She read about our rescue and called us, and Smoochie came to live at West Side Cats. One of our generous donors arranged a visit with a veterinary neurologist in Akron who examined her and said there was nothing he could do to cure her.

We would consider adopting Smoochie out, but whoever wants her would have to spend some time with her at the shelter and realize what they are getting into. Smoochie is beautiful and has an amazing personality, but she is very labor intensive as far as caregiving goes. She'll probably end up spending her life at the shelter, which is not a bad life. She does a lot of public appearances where she gets major petting (and people sneak her forbidden treats, judging by the number of diaper changes we did yesterday.)

Smoochie is a great combination of happy kitten and haughty princess. All of the volunteers love her, but nobody pities her. Once you meet Smoochie pity becomes impossible. You'll never meet another cat who loves being alive as much as Smoochie does. Check out her many videos, you'll see that personality shining on through.

It is difficult to imagine a cat with more of a will to live life to the fullest, beautiful Smoochie! You are surrounded by caregivers that love and respect you, so it may be best that you remain the shelter mascot rather than being adopted out. It takes very special Guardians to take such wonderful care of a very special, Special Needs Cat like Smoochie.
That must be a labor of love, but you will have a Gold Star by your name in Paradise for going that extra effort for Smoochie.

Humans can learn a lot about life by seeing you and hearing your story. We should all try and enjoy our lives to the best of our abilities. I'm not sure who deserves the honor of "hero" more...you or your caregivers! Your strength, your indomitable spirit, your will to survive; your ability to enjoy life to its fullest despite your challeges is nothing short of inpsirational, Smoochie! You truly are a miracle kitty, an exquisite beauty not only in looks, but in heart, and yours is as big as they come! What an inspiraiton you are, not only to all of the dear folks and volunteers at the shelter, but to all who visit you at the shelter, be it in person, on the shelter's webapge, or on YOUR FB page! Hopefully one day that very special forever family, one able and willing to meet your needs, will come along.
