Well, the first "surprise on the deck" was a large kitty some time ago; now...

7am - feeding Pinot this morning - she has her domain in the lower level. There is a sliding glass door in the basement that faces the woods. I'm "plating her food", she talks, I talk back to her, this is the routine. All of a sudden she has gone stock still and silent. I looked at the slider; there is a REALLY BIG mostly black dog at the door. Pinot bolted all the way up to our room. I'm about to leave for work, but can't leave the dog, Coop wasn't going to work, so I woke him and told him we had a visitor who, at that point, had decided our deck was home. Coop came down, checked the collar, only a rabies tag. He called the emergency hospital listed; they tracked the tag, called the owner. The owner was vacationing in California, was awakened at 4am their time with "someone has found your dog". Come to find out the dog had been out on a walk with the owner's prospective mother in law and broke loose while chasing deer. They had been looking for an hour and a half for him (Summit was the dog's name we later learned). The owner didn't even know Summit was missing yet.

I went to work, after getting the pup water and cat treats (sorry, we have no dog food). Summit was taken safely back. Pinot didn't recover for a few hours. She would not come down and eat until she was sure that big bear was not within sight. My brother is visiting, and he said she really skulked around the top of the basement steps until she determined it was her house again.

She has such drama in her life. I don't know how she stands it!

Awww, precious Pinot! I'm sorry the dog frightened you.

Pinot's purr-ents! How wonderful that you were able to get close enough to the dog to read his tag and make a contact with his owner :)

WOW! What a scare for poor widdle Pinot.:( I'm glad that you were able to find the owners of the dog so quickly and hopefully the dog won't try to visit Pinot again.:) I still can't get over that she wasn't afraid of a fox though.;)

Oh Pinot my dear, Labradors are friendly dogs. I can understand why you were scared though. Your mom and dad will protect you from the beast.

I'm glad you were able to get Summit home and that dear Miss Pinot eventually got over her scare.

SO well written! :D

Good job, finding Summit's owner and helping him get him back home. He knew what he was doing, going on YOUR deck.

Pinot, my goodness, you have quite the life! No need for you to watch soap operas, it all happens right there! I am glad you finally reclaimed your basement -- feeding stations are important places!

Thank goodness Pinot had the sense to seek help and comfort:D Eve would have stood at the window and "yelled" her loudest telling the dog to get off "her deck" Poor, poor pupper:o

Thanks for helping the doggie out - I'm sure he's glad to be home and safe again:)

I know, she can be such a fraidy-cat INSIDE, but OUTSIDE?? She's FIERCE!;)

The pup was a sweetie; just wanted to come inside. We have a "baby gate" we put across the deck opening when we're out in the evening with Pinot. I put that across so Summit knew he was supposed to stay there until we made all the phone connections we needed to. Our best guess is this was a shepherd/retriever mix. Could have been Lab or Golden. Medium length coat, but really a nice dog. Just too big for Pinot's deck...;)

Oh Pinot, what a frightful experience! But I'm glad your purrents found the owner of the dog, so you could feel safe again at your feeding station. :) I bet you're going to check one extra time before you go outside.
