Weimaraners can be a big handful. They require a firm hand in training and someone who has time to socialize and exercise him. They are full of energy, sort of like labs. They are great dogs though. It just depends what type of personality you are looking for. They are definately not couch potatoes. If you contact rescue groups, you could probably find one who is calmer and already trained though.

(I'm getting this from a book)!
Rippling with muscles, this Gundog is popular both as a tracker-retriever and as a companion. The Weimaraner usually has an alert, obedient, and fearless personality, although timidity is not unknown in the breed. Both the popular shorthaired and less common long-haired versions are proficient in feild trails, obedience work, and hunting, and make reliable watchdogs. The breed has grace, speed, strength, stamina, and undeniable "star quality", with its handsome carrige obedience train, it is equally at home in towns ar rural areas. The Weimaraner is good with children, suitable for urban living, suitable for hot, sunny climates, POORLY adapted for intense cold, does not need a lot of grooming, and is easy to train! If you want breed history, I can do that too!

A fellow Hound Lover http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

Aly is right, they are not the best dog for first time dog owners and they are a handfull. They are very intellegent, and have lots of energy. They are however beautiful dogs and with training and firm command they are a great dog. They are on my list for a next dog http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

This is Doc. He's at the shelter right now. He's quite a handful but a big sweetie.

Speaking of weimaraners, did anyone see the show this morning... forget what it was... featuring the ones that are in all those commercials and pictures? You know, that wear clothes or count? From what their owner said, they are extremely smart dogs.

I know what your talkin gabout Daisy'sMom, those are William Wegman's dogs. they are smart but can be a handful. If they are not socialized and trained when a puppy they can become aggresive. They are like a Lab or a Golden, they require a lot of exercise. My friend got a pound puppy that was part Weimeraner and she ended up giving her away because of she was so energetic and she kept running into the street.

Bug is part Wiemaraner...part greyhound and part pointer....she is my first dog. I got her when she was between 8 and 12 months old. she had been poorly trained, had been feral for 5 months, taught herself to hunt - kill-and eat, is blind in one eye, and is the love of my life! thanks to lots of great websites i have been able to live with this great dog. the weimaraner site that was a great start and led to other sites is http://www.freedog.com/ Best of luck in making your choice.

ALY , send doc to me!!! i love him! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

The weimaraner's nickname is the gray ghost. The weimaraner has the keen nose of the bloodhound with the pointer's talent for flushing game.

But somewhere - sometime - somehow... i guess i'm destined for Paco or Windy - rescue dals in LA area - Windy is deaf and Paco is healing from being abandoned and hit by a car..... When are we all moving to Pettalkville? and how many dogs does each of us get? how many cats? should i start collecting the animals now or will they be provided for me at the gate? we will have a security gate right?
