Guys, I have never had to experience birthing of kittens in a cat so young and I don't know what to do. She seems to be having some trouble. Can anyone give me an idea about how long is too long for the birth of a kitten. She has been trying to push the little one out for about 5 - 10 minutes. I am thinking that isn't very long. She has no idea what is happening or what to do as she is on the cold marble floor even with 3 different warm, soft places for her to birth them. What can I do? What should I look for to know when it is time to help? Any and all advise would be appreciated greatly.
Thanks
Misty (feral kitty) & Michelle

Called the vet but our vet is on holidays. The problem with that is both him and his wife are the only vets in our clinic and both are gone. Reached his wife by cell phone and she talked to us and told us to call another vet who is looking after any emergencies while they are gone.
She said it could take hours for the first baby to be born. She also said to put a little bit of honey on the mother's gums as she uses up a lot of energy and will need to sugars to keep her going.
I want to pull out my hair. I HATE irresponsible people. This is the reason why I am stressing out and this little cat (kitten really) is having babies. PEOPLE SUCK!!!!

Stay calm, girl. Or else you will stress mama out.
Is she in a crate? Is she approachable? You're doing a great thing, Michelle!! Hang in there. Let nature take it's course. The whole process takes about 10 hours from the first kitten to last. Just watch over her. If she doesn't tear open the sac of each kitten, you'll have to do it for her. Make sure, if she's feral, you wear gloves. But you KNOW that!!! Also make sure that the kittens are breathing and she starts grooming them the minute they're born. She'll clean them up and they'll start nursing. Watch to also make sure no kitten is rejected. If so, you MAY need to bottle feed it. Be prepared for sleep deprivation.
I posted instructions on FB for you as well. I forgot you're in Italy or I'd call you. Please keep us posted.

She is approachable. She started coming to me about a week ago. Yesterday she was acting out of sorts. So I brought out the carrier in hopes of catching her. No catching was necessary. She came to investigate the carrier and I gave her a little push on the tush and she went right in no problems at all. She has been calm all night but she was very uncomfortable this morning and couldn't settle. I checked on her before we (hubby & I) were going to go out and she was soaked. I cleaned up the mess on the floor. There was no crowning at that point. About 10 minutes or so later she has a bubble. That was about an hour ago. She still hasn't pushed this one out. She is pooping all over the moon with the pressure from pushing. She likes the honey the vet said to give her to keep up her energy & strength so that is good. She licks it right off my finger. Anyway, off to check on her again. Will let you know about the progress.
Thanks ^_^

We have the first kitten. Black & white, given birth to while I was on the phone with Donna. TYSM Donna ^_^ The little one is being cleaned and is feeding already. She was so confused that this thing was hanging from her and won't let go she was growling at it. I got her and baby into the box immediately. He is nice and warm. Just waiting for the placenta to pass now. Off to check on her again.
Thanks everyone ^_^

Michelle,
She will eat the placentas, which is normal and has a boatload of nutrients in it!!! It's good for her AND the babies!!
Glad I was able to help. Like I said, I'll call you a little later to see how everything is going!!
Great job!!

Misty just had her second baby. All black with a white bikini. Going to attach photos of Misty from 2 days ago and 1 of the first baby. Second one is not a pretty sight due to the birthing 'mess'.

Whew! I was on the edge of my seat reading these posts! Donna gave you excellent advice. It's been so long since I've had a cat that had kittens that I couldn't remember how long the process was. We had a similar experience nearby. A 6 month old cat, kitten actually, gave birth to 3 adorable kittens. Mama had been declawed and tossed out while pregnant. Nice people, huh? The rescuer is currently looking for homes for all 4 of them. One is a tuxie, one a tiger, one an orangie and mom looks to be a dilute tortie. I wish I could take them all. You're doing great, girlie. Hang in there.

She looks SO much like Mattie Grace, the Russian Blue I took in years ago in MI. She was VERY pregnant and gave birth in one of my bedrooms. It was a beautiful experience. One I will ALWAYS remember. But I'm glad I got her spayed and found all of them homes.
Give yourself a pat on the back from me from across the sea, Michelle!!

When Daisy May, a feral, had her kittens 4 years ago, I went in to feed her and she was in the midst of having one of them! She gave me such a growl and stink eye; I left her food and crept out. She never did warm up to me, but her kittens were awesome. Good luck with your crew!

Make that 3. Baby #3 is here. Looks like another blackie. Had to once again break the sac, cut the cord and the whole deal. She is laying down now quite tranquil. All babies are feeding.
I think she may have one more in there yet. So will have to keep a close eye on her. She is doing well and not showing any signs right now.
I have a wonderful vet. Though he is in vacation in the center of Italy with his family he called me about 20 minutes ago to see how the cat was doing. I was impressed as I have not seen that in a single vet here up to this point.

got an issue. The last kitten born is not eating. He is super weak. They were all eating before so I don't know what's going on. He is the runt and was born breach. Momma isn't rejecting, he is rejecting her if you want to put it like that. There is no KRM available here. I would have to find out what else is available. I am sure there is something but don't know what. What can I give him now? It is 11:10 pm here and nothing is open before 8:30 am. I am afraid we will lose him through the night.

You did a good thing, Michelle. Thank you!!! Glad everyone (especially YOU!!) is okay and healthy. Mama needs nutrition now that she's feeding 4 babies. Nutrical is a great supplement. Also, feed her canned kitten food. When Mattie Grace was pregnant, I used to boil her chicken livers. She LOVED them!!!

I put a call in to my vet but everyone is busy so I'm waiting for a call back. In the meantime, I called another vet and I was told to NOT give it human milk b/c it will cause severe diarrhea and that can't be good for a newborn who is already weak. KMR is suggested but if it isn't available to you, I don't know what else to suggest. My late vet would know a formula to give it so, hopefully, my current vet may know of one, too. As soon as I hear anything, I'll pass the info on to you. I hope the little one holds on 'til then.

Ok, first and foremost: my current vet's associate said to express some milk from the mother's breast and then put the kitten right up to it while the milk is coming out. That should get her to eating but if that doesn't work, put some expressed milk into a dropper and feed the kitten that way. If that still doesn't work, here is the formula. My late vet's associate had it handy:
1/2 C. evaporated milk
1/2 C. water
1 egg yolk (no white)
10 drops human baby vitamins
2 T. Karo syrup
You will have to feed it w/a dropper every 4 hours around the clock and rub the area where it poops and pees w/a warm wash cloth in order to get it to go. Keep it warm but not too warm and try not to handle it too much other than for feeding. My current vet's associate said that time is of the essence; don't wait too long if you see that the kitten won't feed from her mom.
Good luck and bless you for taking care of the sweetie pies. (((HUGS)))

Forgot to mention to feed it an ounce or two but not more than that. The kitten will let you know when she's full b/c she'll pull away or push your hand away. I'm praying that all goes well, Michelle.

sad news: Baby #3 has passed. It was a little boy and the runt at the time. He passed just as she started delivering baby #4. I guess he had to be born to make way for #4 to be born but he had to pass to allow #4 a chance to make it. I spent some time with momma & the kittens and I keep checking in every 15 minutes. All 3 of the remaining babies are nursing. Fingers crossed it stays that way.
So, as it stands so far Misty had 4 babies. #1 black & white (girl), #2 gray (sex unknown), #3 gray (male rb) & #4 black & white (sex unknown). I can't imagine she has anymore in there but she is still breathing pretty heavily, is purring away and seems to be relaxed. Eyes closed, tranquil & seems content.
Will update again with more news later.

Talk about sleep deprived nights!!! I got to sleep around 4:30 am and up again 30 minutes later with hubby for work. Tried to go back to sleep when he left but took me almost an hour and then was awakened by the BIL when he left at 7:00, by FIL again at 8:00 by Guido (called to see how the kitties were) at 9:00 and have been up ever since. It's 10:30 now. Enough whining from me though.
So, far so good. Momma is very good with them. She is careful when she repositions herself or gets in and out to eat or drink. Kittens are loud and active with round little tummies and feeding well. SO fingers crossed that all continues to go well.
I will get some pics in a little bit when I feed momma Misty again. FIL just got back from the pet store with some Royal Canin baby cat dry (for momma), Royal Canin Recovery canned & some cat milk for nursing mothers. Miz Misty will be a happy kitty.
Will keep you all updated and will post pics as soon as I can.
Thanks again guys.

Donna, I was actually feeding momma when you called and didn't take the home phone in her room with me, only had my cell in my pocket. She has eaten but had some major diarrhea but that was this morning and there has been nothing since. I figure with all the strain on her little body that is to be expected. She is also spotting a little blood here and there not sure if that is normal. She is happy and looks for lovin's, purrs up a storm when petted and demands her wet food when hungry. The 3 babies have round little tummies and are quite active. Not much crying from them except when momma gets up to eat or get some affection so I figure that's a good thing as if they were cold or hungry or anything they would let you know as they all have some mighty lungs on them.
Just have a couple of pics for you and haven't got a face shot of baby #2 (gray). Will work on getting that. Guido is afraid to do more than a teeny stroke on them cause they are so little and he is afraid he will hurt them by mistake.
Anyway, I'll shut up now and post the pics.

Helene, I am not sure on names yet but I have a wonderful home already lined up for 1 of them. Guido's boss wants one. I can vouch that she is a good cat mom as her last cat who just passed was 19 and the one that passed last year was 22. Always indoor cats, altered and well cared for. She is a real cat person.
As for names, they were born on Liberation Day (yesterday) here in Italy so I am thinking of going with 'freedom' type names. I was thinking of Liberta for the female or Libby for short but not sure about the males. Will be getting some history from Guido for those.

Just a little update.
Everyone is doing well. Misty is a great mommy and the kittens are very active and feeding well. They all have nice round tummies and are kept content. They rarely cry except when one is feeding from the same nipple that another wants. You have to see these little scrappers fight over the boobies. LOL
They are only 3 days old and we have great homes for 2 of them already. Both are with co-workers of hubby's. One is his manager who's last 2 cats lived to 19 & 22 respectively and the other is a lady that already has a cat who is exclusively indoor, spayed and well cared for so I know both these will be going to very good homes. Not bad I would say for them being only 3 days old. Only have 1 more kitten to place & Misty. I think I am gonna have issues letting anyone take Misty. She is already bonded to us and I know she can and will bond to someone else but it will be me that will have the trouble letting go. I am really gonna try. I have to find the perfect home and if that happens then I am think I will be comfortable letting her go.

Great update, and how nice that two out of the three already have homes lined up! Many years ago, my big brother's cat had a litter of kittens - her spay date was already scheduled but their son, who was four at the time, let her outside against orders because "she really wanted to go out." Well, one of my coworkers agreed to take a kitten, and when my mother delivered said kitten to me at work one day, another coworker was smitten, and he immediately agreed to take one of its siblings! Maybe that will happen at your husband's office!

Hey, Michelle -- what do your crew think of Misty and babies? Even if you have her in a room with the door closed, by now they know she is there!
I only have one pissy boots here and that is Phoenix. Artica just wants in with the kittens. This will be her second litter to be around. She was here when Bella had her babies and they were brought inside. She never once tried to do anything but lick them to death. Artica loves cats and for her cats are suppose to be inside. If they are outdoors she freaks out and barks her head off, once they come inside she is perfectly fine with them. Frost & Vega are curious but that's about it. Frost had his nose out of joint for the first day but that is because he tried to run in the room where she was and she charged him and hissed at him. Now there is none of that. Bella really couldn't care less. But Phoenix has been in a 'MOOD' since she came in the house. She is not impressed and that's that. LOL
Misty isn't very concerned about the other kitties or the dog anymore either. She was intimidated at first by the dog but that was due to Artica always barking at her while she was outside. And she charged Frost that first day but she was scared and nervous. She has seen them all outside the door and just lays there looking at them. She is very trusting so I guess she feels safe and that I wouldn't let anything happen so she is ok with it all.

They are 9 days old today and the first born's eyes are just starting to open, just a teeny tiny bit on the right eye in the corner. I know 10 - 14 days for eyes to open is the norm so they are right on schedule.
I will try to get Guido to help me tomorrow or over the next day or 2 to get some new photos of them. I am hoping to be able to snag some close-ups & individual photos. The little gray one is going to be a fluffy butt. He has longer fur than the others. The little girl is the smallest but the has the most spunk.
Anyway, gonna keep it short. Hubby is watching a movie and I stole the computer when he went to the potty. hehehehe

What beautiful pictures!!! Misty is gorgeous and looks very happy, I can see the proud smile on her face. The babies are so precious  Could they possibly be any cuter?
You have done a wonderful job helping this new kitty family! Groucho and I thank you for caring enough to help Misty deliver her babies safely. Would you give Misty some lovies for me to celebrate her first Mother's Day?

I am sorry that I almost missed this thread. I remember when Pouncette had her two babies at the Found Cat Hotel, and one little Baby had passed on.
I named her Pounceroo , nas laid her to rest under a bush in the back yard.
She was so tiny and gray and white like her Mamma Cat.

Here is a little update for those of you that continue to follow these little rascals. 3 weeks ago today these little farts were born. They are doing really well. Growing like weeds. They love to be cuddled and want out every time someone goes into their room. They are getting really good at getting around and momma doesn't like that one bit. LOL The little girl is the most adventurous and the most advanced. She is smart as a whip and catches on really really fast. Whenever she is out she makes a b-line for the cat milk & water dishes. She is drinking without an issues. She didn't once stick her nose in too far like they have the tendency to do and sneeze. She knew right away what to do. She actually sat and watched Misty drink & then decided it was her turn and copied momma perfectly. The 1st born male (b&w) is quite agile. He climbs up & down out of my lap on his own. The others don't do that yet. But he isn't as quick on his feet or into the water or milk dish yet. But he is the only one that plays pounce with the kitty toys. The little gray one is the biggest in size and he is a real momma's boy. He does nothing if he can get away with it. If he wants something he doesn't try to do it he just cries and momma comes running to give him what he wants....that is almost always to be fed. LOL He is such a piggy. Misty is doing good too. She eats well, uses the litter box faithfully. Doesn't cause a fuss about being penned up with the babies all the time. Her only complaint is that she wants me to stay with her ALL the time. When I go to leave the room she grabs my leg and bites my toes. She loves to be loved on.
So now I will shut up and post some pics. These were taken today. There are 7 in total. 5 in this post and 2 more in the next. Hope you all enjoy them.

I think the one of Libby and her "twin" brother is the funniest. It looks like she is about to bite his face off. LOL Or the other way around, couldn't tell who was who really.

Umm, you forgot the Cuteness Overload Warning! I, for one, was not prepared for so much cuteness, talk about turning to mush on the floor!!! They are beyond adorable and I'm hopelessly in love with each of them.
You have done an extraordinary job of caring for Misty and her babies. Your love and care for them comes shining through. Thank you for all you have done for this sweet little kitty family!
