View Full Version : Am I doing Right by Mz Logan? So Upset! UPDATE Apr 12

Last week, while giving Logan a massage, I felt a small, hard lump, below where her navel would be, near her crotch. The vet immediately fit me in and took a needle biopsy. Today she called and said the results were inconclusive. Fatty tissue as well as lymphocites.
So I made the hard decision to have the lump removed on Thursday. If it's not serious, I saved her, if it is serious, I feel I hopefully nipped it in the bud.
Of course my heart is pounding and I feel sick. I can't stop petting her. Worse yet, I'll be alone and hope I can get her in and out of my new car, which is higher for her to to jump into. I have steps which she'll us up but not down. I don't want her to hurt herself.
Of course, she has no clue what's in store. So innocent. She just wants me to pet her, more than normal, so I'm praying she's feeling OK. She eats, drinks, poops normal. Her hip is bothering her, but that's not unusual.
Did I make the right decision, rather than ignore it? Please keep Mz Logan in your prayers. I can't stop crying. This was so sudden. The vet can't believe I found the lump, it's in a weird place.

Yes, you did the right thing.
The vet will remove the lump and some tissue all around it. Be sure you have it sent to the lab for biopsy.
Mz. Logan will recover from the removal.
The biopsy results will tell you what that lump is and you need to know that You don't WANT to know, but yeah, you need to know.
The lab will also test the tissue all around the lump. You want that to be free of the cells in the lump -- which means the vet excised te whole thing, none of those cells are left in her body.
It will be scary / worrisome until you get that lab report back -- I know, I've been through this at least twice in the past 4 years, since getting dogs in my life.
I pray you get the same positive results I've had both times.

Me again. She wants more petting, most likely because she is picking up on your emotions. IF you can (and this is NOT easy), try to live in the present, as she does.
So getting her up into the car will be alright. Getting her down, can you use a big beach towel, hold it around her middle and ease her down thee steps that way? Maybe practice a few times now, before her surgery.

Of course you made the right decision, because, either way - you would have worried .......... Miz Logan knows you are looking after her, and so do we.
Can someone help you get her in and out of the car at the Vet office?

You've made the right decision. If you were to leave it alone it would haunt you and you'd eventually have to have it removed anyway. 5 years ago the lump in my breast wasn't cancerous but all I could think was get it out! Leaving it would have driven me crazy.
Try to be positive. You will be able to get her to/from the vet. She will do fine and will be just fine afterwards. Believe. You can do this!!

Cincy has had more lumps and bumps removed then I can count. she has had some in the belly/mammary gland area, that although not cancerous the vet said had a good blood supply and all the signs of turning into cancer. She's had 1 at the base of her tail, and under her arm (neither cancer) and one on her leg (that was cancer). I think she has had a surgery every year for the past 2-3. Everytime I question if putting her under is the right thing. And everytime it works out just fine and she is her normal self long before she is allowed to play, and that is the biggest challenge!
You are doing the right thing and you are a great doggy mommy...that is why you found the lump most people wouldn't. Best wishes for Logan!

Oh Karen, I'm so sorry!! I pray Logan will be okay and it's nothing to worry about. Either way, you DEFINITELY made the right decision. The animals can't take themselves to the vet. Poor baby. It's difficult trying to help them through it. That's all you can do. Like Sandie said, all animals know is the present. It's very difficult to do when you're heart is breaking.

You did the right thing. If the lump was on the small side, she'll be fine to walk. I had Prue spayed several months ago, and within a few hours of being spayed, she was walking and got into the car as well as up the steps. She was groggy, but still able to walk.
Hugs to you and sweet Ms. Logan. She'll be fine, I promise.

You made the right decision. No question about it.
Find someone to help you get her out of the car. Even a long board would help, lay it in your yard to set up before she jumps out.
Good luck and lots of prayers to you both!

Thanks everyone for the good thoughts and
Logan had her blood tests today. The nurse can't believe she's the same dog I adopted 8 years ago. She's so good.
I know we all lie in bed and think of stuff. Last night, mine was how much I hate April. Cody died, a day later I lost my job, I had my hand accident in April (5 years today!), plus some other awful things. Then the vet that saw me, was the same vet that diagnosed Cody with cancer 8 years ago. I hadn't seen her since. My regular vet was out when I called about Logan's lump, so she was available within the hour. It took me a second to register when I saw her face. I know, I have too much to think about. I gave Logan a Rimydal for her achy hips and right before I sat at the computer, she slept on my chest. I desperately tried not to cry. I'll be OK. I have friends going to help me with Logan.

I empathise. When Bobby had lumps taken out last year, except for the neuter it was his first ever op plus he's no youngster, was it the right thing to do? I was worried sick.
Of course it was the right thing to do, no other option really, same as for Logan.
Prayers and positive thoughts winging their way for Logan and for you. {{hugs}}

Whew! It's been a LOOOONG day. I stayed while Logan was sedated. She's quite a fighter, so I put cotton in her ears and shut the lights. She finally became a ragdoll, which made me cry, and they carried her into the OR. I ran errands because I just couldn't go home to an empty house. She was out of surgery by 11a and I got her at 2p.
Good news, the vet thinks. She only made a teeny incision and the lump came out with her fingers, no cutting, even though it was attached to a ligament. She thinks she's clear. She did a total exam and found all innards OK. Logan's blood work came back fine, which was a good sign. She still took another biopsy so I'm waiting for results. Thanks for all your prayers.
I also had her microchipped and had her hips Xrayed. After the radiologist reads them, we'll make a decision on more treatment other than Dasaquin. Thanks Sandie, and others for the info on Adequan. That's an option. Thanks so much for your wisdom.
Logan is still a bit out of it. We took a nice nap together. When I brought her home, she stood and stared at me for 30 minutes! Oh, the guilt! "Whatja do to me, ma?"
Suddenly developed a huge migraine around 4p, so I had to take some meds just now. Must be nerves and my ulcers. Gawd, I hate when our pets are sick. What torture.
Thanks again, everyone. Your support means the world to me. You give me courage and comfort. I can't thank you enough. I love you guys!:love::love:

Good news, the vet thinks. . . .
Logan is still a bit out of it.
It came out so easily? Yup, that is a positive indicator. Come on, Lab, get that report done!
Most of us - humans and pets, need a good night's sleep to recover from that anesthesia stuff. Not surprised she was a bit out of it last evening.
I am glad you are both back home, and I'm sure you had a lovely night of peaceful sleep. Please give Mz. Logan some pets from me!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Logie-Boo-Boo-Ba slept like a log all night, as did I. Today, she was her old hungry, playful, sweet self. No licking of incisions or where the intravenous was. She's so good. I'm so relieved, and will be more so when the lab tests come back negative.
Logan, your namesake will be 10 in August. Supposively she was 2 when I got her (who knows?) but no lady wants to be older than she is! :p The vet thinks she may be older. i don't care, as long as she lives a LONG healthy, happy life. The grey on her muzzle becomes her. She still acts like a puppy.
She has a lumpy near her armpit but it's definitely fatty. This lump was hard as a rock, which is why I flew into a panic.

The vet called today. Logan has hip(s) dysplasia and degenerative arthritis. So, I'm to continue Dasaquin and Rimydal (as needed). We'll do blood tests every 2 months or so to check any side effects, but since Logan is so healthy (knock on wood), she doesn't forsee a problem. I'm to give her fish oil. I'm not wealthy, but instead of buying it over the counter, she sold me some especially made for dogs, since vitamin manufacturers process differently. And it's premeasured. I'll just knock off other useless expenses. Whatever it takes to keep her comfortable. She also mentioned "laser treatment". i should have questioned more, but I got dimwitted and forgot. Shots are another option down the line.

Hi Karen,
We tried the laser therapy with Spot's arthritic knee. It was $200 for the first 6 treatments, which were 2x per week for 3 weeks. We saw definite improvements during that time. The problem has been it is $50/treatment after that, and not keeping up with it, I can tell his knee is still bothering him. We need to talk to the vet and see if we can buy 6 more treatments for the $200 and schedule one every 2 weeks or 1 x month. The idea is that the effects are cumulative and that the intense 2x per week won't be needed long term....but how frequently they are needed can vary.
There is some decent information at www.k-laservet.com or if you have any questions, I will try my best to answer.
Glad everything is good with Logan!

Thanks a million! The laser sight was so interesting! That, of course, will definitely be an option. I'm giving Logan Rimydal every other day, as I noticed after dinner, she gets very tired if I give it to her every day. I'll experiment. She still ran after a rabbit in our yard today. i guess she'd ignore pain and do that anyway..those nasty critters invading her property! :D
I'll do anything to keep her healthy and happy.
