On Sunday, February 24, 1980, the U.S. Hockey team defeated Finland to win the gold medal at the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York.

Here's a schedule for that day...

And here's a video clip...

So I've got a pot of hot water on for tea and I can make hot chocolate too.

Not a hockey fan but I do remember that Olympic game!!!

I'd love some hot chocolate. It's rainy and cold here. But better than snowy and cold for sure!!!

That was a great game! I don't often watch games on TV, but we watched that one, and it was great!

Hot chocolate for all, and I'll make chocolate chocolate chip shortbreads, and make 'em round, so they look kinda like pucks! Tastier, though!

I will have some hot chocolate and a chocolate "puck"...............something sweet sounds good.

I too, saw that game. It was an exciting time. I wish our news was filled with more of the same instead of the sad stories that we have today.

Some hot chocolate please. Freeeeeezzzzzzzing here. -23C temp -33C windchill. Which equates to -9.4F temp and -27.4F windchill. I can't wait to go home today and snuggle up with Cali and Diego.

That was cool. That was my junior year, and I remember someone coming in and spoiling it (the game was on tape delay!) One of the players was on our 1985 NCAA champion hockey team.

Sorry I am late.

I have had scads of things on the old bean.

First let me take orders and say DONE!

In the most current issue of Playboy there is an article about Bob Probert.

The art work at the beginning of the article is one of the best sports paintings I had seen in a while....

It's Friday night - I'm switching to a cocktail! Anyone care to join me? Vodka and Ginger, barkeep, and I'll set up a munchie tray for the bar. Mozzarella sticks and cheesesteak bites anyone?

It's Friday night and I've got a headache. I'm making another pot of tea and this time I'm going to add a little rum to my cup before I pour in the tea!

It's Friday evening, and I'd like a nice glass of white wine while I listen to Donizetti's L’elisir d’amore.

If I can't watch a hockey game, I'll take opera

The picture is of BP skating off ice with the helmets of his "foes" in hand.

The article was a very well written tribute to him.

Richard posted that great photo of Robert Probert, leaving the ice with 3 helmets in his hand - post #18 above.

Probert died last year of heart problems. His brain went to Boston University - at his request. It showed that he had CTE - chronic traumatic encephalopathy.

From CBC, here is some info about this condition. (http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/story/2011/03/03/f-nowinski-probert-q-a-transcript.html)

Athletes in many sports are at risk to develop this over time.

Speaking of Hockey Greats...

SIX overtime periods. Oy. No matter what those ladies do from here on out, they were a part of this. Really cool stuff.

Why do I cringe when I think of women's hockey and overtime period?;)

Years ago, there was a 32 inning minor league baseball game that ended late the next morning.

One player went home and was confronted by an irate wife who started in on him about his whereabouts for the almost the whole night.

"I was playing baseball...."

:)

I stand corrected...

http://www.baseball-reference.com/bullpen/Longest_game_in_Organized_Baseball_history

At 2:00 AM Pawtucket reliever Luis Aponte, who had pitched the seventh through tenth innings, received permission to go home from his manager. However, his wife did not greet him with open arms. Upon his arrival, Xiomara Aponte asked angrily, "Where have you been?" to which the pitcher responded "At the ballpark," to which his wife snapped "Like hell you have." [2] Aponte reasoned that the news of the game would be in the Sunday papers, but its length meant that the game was still ongoing at press time and news of the game was not published until Monday. Aponte reportedly spent both nights on the couch.
