View Full Version : Samantha has had a lump removed

Sometime early last year we took Samantha to the vet with a lump on her side. As the vet was manipulating it, it disappeared. Over the next few weeks it would come back, and diminish as we manipulated it. Around Autumn sometime, the lump did not disappear as it was manipulated and when we took Samantha and Jessica for their annual check-ups in December we asked for the lump to be aspirarated.
Although it still looked like a cyst, a lot of blood came out, which can be indicative of another problem, and the vet was keen to have the lump surgically removed and send it for testing.
Samantha had the lump removed this week and now has a cone on her head, poor baby. She has to go back for a check up on Saturday and hopefully the results of the biopsy should be back.
In the meantime, she is being an awfully good girl with the lampshade on her head, and taking her antibiotics. She is a complete sweetheart!

Hopefully, it's a cyst and nothing more. My Creamsicle just had one removed in November. It had abscessed and looked way worse than it was. Looking forward to a good update. Keep the faythe.

Karen, I so hope the result will be a good one! Fister and I are keeping fingers and paws crossed for her.
I can picture her with that lampshade on, but what a good girl she is accepting it. :) How does Jessica react to her?
Kisses from me and purrs from Fister.

Sorry Samantha but I had to chuckle - visualizing you with a lampshade...
It's awful when our kitties have something wrong and I sure hope the results are OK.
Hugs Karen (Alec too if that's OK ;)) and purrs to Samantha and Jessica:love::love::love:

Thank you all for your good wishes for Samantha. The vet called today with the biopsy results. The lump that was removed was a tumour, but not malignant. We had been very worried, because Samantha has developed another lump between her shoulder blades, but as the vet pointed out, that is where she would have been injected and she has possibly had a reaction to that.
She goes back soon to have her stiches out, but in the meantime she is being a very good girl and taking her antibiotics without complaint. When we are both with her in the evening we take off the cone so that she can groom herself, and she doesn't complain when it goes back on again overnight. She is being a complete sweetie!

Hello, I just saw this thread. I'm sorry Samantha had to have surgery but at least now you know it is not malignant which is great. It sure sounds as if she is a very good patient (better than my Luke would be) to put up with the cone without complaining. My best to all of you. Kay in NC USA, Thur Jan 13

I'm so please to hear the good news.
Please keep a close eye on the lump between her shoulder blades.
I'm sure you can guess why it concerns me.

Absolutely I can! The vet thinks it is probably nothing to be concerned about, but I know that Alec is extremely concerned - Samantha is his baby.
We will see what the vet has to say when we take Samantha to have her stiches removed.

Sweet Samantha, we are all so glad that all went well and the news from the vet are good.
Tell your daddy that many people have had benign tumours removed and are not the worse for wear ;)
But you may use the mood he's in to get you more treats.

This is wonderful news.:) I too hope that her other lump is just a reaction to an injection. She sure is being such a good girl about everything.:)

Samantha has had her stitches out and is very happy to be rid of the cone. She is slightly less pleased to still be taking antibiotics, but tomorrow is the last one.
When she was at the vet to have her stitches removed, she had dropped a bit of weight. Probably not surprising as she was quite lethargic for a week after the operation and didn't eat very much at all. They would like to weigh her again in a couple of weeks. In the meantime we will keep an eye on the lump between her shoulder blades, and if it is still there the vet can aspirate it when we go back for the weight check.
Samantha thanks you all for your good wishes. x
I just got the one photo of her with her cone on -

Chances are that Samantha lost weight b/c of wearing the cone. My Yodie would hardly eat while wearing hers b/c she had a hard time maneuvering and b/c she was depressed. As soon as that cone came off, she started eating regularly again and now her weight is back to normal. I wouldn't worry too much about that. Good for her that the nasty mean ol' cone is off, though. ;)

Oh Samantha, isn't it good to get that cone off, and you're last pill is tomorrow - after one more nights sleep. :) Then you can eat normally again - you definitely deserve some extra treats for going through this! ;)
Fister and I send purrs and kisses.

Oh Samantha, you look so small and poorly with that dreadful cone- it will be wonderful once it comes off. I hope there is still a little German liver sausage for cats available to feed you. And I hope the lump will be gone as well. I remember Orion had a little lump after his rabies shot- I began to be worried but it went away all of its own.

Oh, poor baby, looking so unhappy with the lampshade.. aren't you glad to be done with that?! And after tomorrow, no more nasty things stuck down your throat! We bet your appetite picks up soon.

Oh, Samantha! I am glad to know the cone is gone. Does your mommy know that sometimes heating a bit of wet food to just barely warm can help increase the food intake? Otherwise, tell her you want only your most fave things! Get totally better!

I'm so glad to hear that she's cone free again.:) Now hopefully her appetite will return so she'll gain her weight back.:) I know that sometimes the antibiotics will also cause cats to lose their appetites.;)

I don't think Samantha knows that her course of antibiotics is finished. She hides from us in the morning, hoping that we will forget to give her a tablet. :D
I really was not worried about her loss of weight. I thought the vet was being a little over-zealous there, but Jessica is due for a weight check in a week anyway, so it really is not any problem to take Samantha too. As far as I can tell, the lump between her shoulder blades has gone.
Samantha is still not very active, but it is still cold here and they are not moving much at all, preferring to spend time curled up in fleecy blankets. Most days they are still lying around under radiators. :D Roll on Spring!

Oh dear Samantha:(
I am so sorry it has taken me so long to see this thread and hope you feel much better. It's no fun having an owie and then having to wear a cone and take pills too!! Poor little girl:love::love:
You know if you ask mom and dad for some treats honey, you'll get everything your little cat heart desires:D:D
Feel better soon sweetie:love:
I hope for you that your beloved Samantha is all "out of the woods" now, and will recover completely.
Love,
Sus
