He's going in tomorrow for a complete checkup and if all checks out well, a teeth cleaning. His breath is really bad and I'm hoping he doesn't have a bad tooth. I'd hate to think that he was suffering w/a toothache and I didn't know. Anyhow, if you could spare a prayer for my little coward, I'd appreciate it. I should've named him Fraidy. ;)

These pix aren't the best but he's camera shy. Where Boo was, you'd find Specs so in the first pic it looks like Specs has two heads. LOL I'll update w/new pix soon. :)

Hey Specs, you are one fluffy boy! Nice to see you have a "shadow," lol! Good luck at the vet, tomorrow.

Name him "Fraidy?" Nah, they need a name to grow into!

When I bought Cuddles home, she was so afraid I was going to name her Phantom, as in Phantom of the Opera. She would hide in the litter box and peak out the hood opening. Dad is th e one told me to pick a name for her to grow into.

And today? She is VERY cuddly, with ME ONLY! Ha haaaaa. Jokes on Dad, she won't go near him -- YET. Only been 4 years but hey, took her 2 years to venture out of my bedroom, so there is still time.

Be brave Specs - it will be okay! There are 2 bad breath dogs here with mouth issues, but they can't have any dentals because of their old tickers. Thank goodness for antibiotics. Hopefully just a good cleaning will fix you right up! :p

Lovely, both of them!

Prayers for Specs that all is well with his toofies and all they need is a cleaning. Or that whatever the kitty-dentist does makes him be all well and his breath sweet-smelling again.

He is such a handsome boy! Lets hope his dental problem is as simple as Boo's was that time.. Remember? She had inflamed gums really bad and what looked like a real bad tooth.. We did 10 days of antibiotics and took her back in for a better look.... she had chunk of food stuck on one tooth that really inflamed her gums and with the inflammation gone, the vet just got it off with a quick flick of his finger.. Let hope and pray it is as simple a fix as it was for Boo. Meantime, prayers are flowing.

Dr. Lee said "Well, you were right; it's his teeth". He has a molar w/a hole in it, a cavity, and his gum is pus filled, poor boy. That tooth will come out and possibly another one. I feel so bad. Specs wouldn't let me look way back in his mouth so I had no way of knowing, just went on instinct that it was a bad tooth. Dr. Lee was surprised that Specs doesn't have a systemic infection. I'll pick him at 4:15 today. This is his first time under anesthesia and Dr. Lee said "I've done probably 10,000 of these but anesthesia is always a risk". He's never said that to me before that I can recall so it scared me a little. I hope my boy is going to be ok. He had a rough time for a while after Boo died but he's come around and now he's a really sweet cat. Please keep the prayers going for him.

He's a senior cat now, too, b/c he's 11 years old, at least, that's what we think. When I rescued him in 2002, the local vet approximated his age at 2 years. (Jeez, I had to stop and do some math. I had him at 9 but he'll be 11 going by the month I rescued him, which is February of 2002.) I just feel so bad that he was in pain w/a bad tooth. That's agony. But there really was no way of knowing; I just went on instinct and, thankfully, I got him to the vet on time. He's going to get lots of TLC when he comes home and he'll sleep w/me. That will be a first for him. He likes to sleep inside a carrier. I'll put it in my bedroom for him to make him feel more secure. That way he can either snuggle w/me or burrow into a fluffy towel inside his carrier.

My boy isn't doing too well. He started shrieking when I brought him home and, at first, I thought he just wanted attention. I carried him downstairs to where the litter boxes are b/c I thought he might have to go but he just laid down on his side on the cold concrete and isn't moving. There's carpeting down there but he seems to want to be on the concrete. :(

Sorry, I was so upset that at first I posted this on the wrong thread and then I forgot to give you the scoop. Specs had two molars pulled. I saw the pictures, ugh. He's still bleeding a little from the extractions and they told me not to worry unless he bleeds excessively. They considered having him spend the night but no one would be there should he start bleeding badly, so they told me to keep a close watch on him. Poor boy. He must have been in so much pain and now he's still in pain. Well, they did give him a pain shot and some more pain meds that I can give him if I feel he needs them tonight. I feel awful.

Aw Specs, you are in recovery now, dear boy. Yes it was scary, yes those bad teefies was ouching and are now gone. Just rest for a while dear boy.

Mary, don't be so hard on yourself. I know you are among the first to remind the rest of us that cats hide pain well, by the time we know there is a problem, its been going on awhile. You got him in to the vet, Dr. Lee took care of him. As an owner, you did well.

Now this boy is tired, scared and sore. All to be expected. Praying the pain meds kick in and he sleeps through the night. Could be some reaction to the anesthesia, too.

The pain meds you have, is that pills? Oh dear, good luck if you need to administer those. I hate when they send dental pets home with pills; there oughta be a law! LOL

Specs hid in the basement and I had to crawl on my belly to get him out from under the Hoosier cabinet. Normally I would've let him alone but the swelling in his face was bad and I was concerned about bleeding. I brought him in bed w/me and he stayed for a while but he just couldn't relax. He'd lie on his side for a short time, then he'd just sit up. He looked so uncomfortable. I kept checking on him during the night and at 2:00 AM I had a nature call and he took that opportunity to jump out of bed and go downstairs. There are no litter boxes on the main floor and I was concerned that he'd have to go and would be too weak or dizzy to walk upstairs to the spare litter box so I kept checking on him. Finally, I decided to let him be. This morning when I got up at 6:00, he was standing in the hallway.

Hopefully, he'll feel like eating a little canned food this morning b/c I have to give him his antibiotic. It's a liquid but I imagine it'll bother his stomach if he doesn't have food in him. I also have more pain meds to give him but that makes me nervous b/c I have to be out for several hours today. I don't want him stumbling around. At least the swelling in his face has gone down somewhat but I'd still appreciate those prayers.

Awwwww Specs - you just don't know what hit you - do you??? Just relax and take it easy, and you'll be feeling lots better in no time, and all this will just seem like a bad dream.

Mary - I'm sure he's going to be just fine. I'm certain he's just totally spooked by the whole ordeal and doesn't understand why he feels like he does. Imagine going to sleep, and waking up and feeling like a big old bus ran over you! Add to that, that he's a Fraidy to start with - well is it any wonder that he's acting like he is?????

Prayers continue for his speedy recovery, from me  and the Fuzzbuttz.:love:

I just got off the phone w/Dr. Lee. He said that it more than likely is the pain med Buprinex that's causing him to act that way. He said that it acts like morphine. He also said that those two teeth were so rotten that he had to use a drill to get them out, that it was like removing wisdom teeth in an adult, so no wonder his little mouth is so sore!

Specs refused soft canned food this morning and he still hasn't drunk any water or used the litter box and that really had me concerned. Again, Dr. Lee said not to worry but if it continues to call him back and that I can give Specs a subQ treatment if he still refuses water. I'm going to buy some baby food and add a little water and syringe it into his mouth at Dr. Lee's suggestion.

I just wish I had seen those bad teeth sooner. I checked his gums and the teeth that he would allow me to see but it's no wonder that he wouldn't let me check his back molars. He was probably in so much pain and I had no way of knowing. I'll tell ya, I really wish God would've given our furkids the power of speech just when they're sick or in pain. (Otherwise, I'd go nuts w/all the yacking around here. Yodie talks too much as it is. LOL)

I feel better after having talked w/Dr. Lee. He always makes me feel better. Now, to make my boy Specs feel better......

Thanx for all the kind words and prayers, my PT family. It's so appreciated.

Hugs Mary, you are doing great, checking in w/the doc and so on.

Considering what you have described, I wouldn't expect him to eat at all today. It must hurt just to open his mouth, and if the meds are making him "loopy," eating is not going to help.

Praying for healing and recovery to kick in soon. Once you stop the morphine-like meds,it may take 12 hours for that to clear his system.

Can you confine him to one room for a day or 2? I had to chuckle at you down on the floor to get him out from under a cabinet, but I'm sure it wasn't funny, you were too worried about him.

Well, I always have food, water and a litter box set up in the guest room for just such situations and I put him in there and he did not like it one bit. He shrieked and shrieked and I didn't want to stress him any more than he'd already been so I brought him downstairs. He seemed to be ok there but there are so many tight places to get into in the basement and, of course, he found one instantly. I probably did look like a crazy cat lady crawling on my belly to drag him out from under the Hoosier but if he had been bleeding, I'd never be able to tell b/c it's so dark under there. Fortunately, the bleeding has stopped.

Dr. Lee said that Specs wasn't coming out of the anesthesia as quickly as he'd like so he gave him something to bring him out of it and he actually jumped up. That's what he thinks got the bleeding going. He also said that I could switch him to Tramadol twice a week b/c Buprinex kills the pain but it also causes depression, which could be another reason why Specs doesn't want to eat or drink. He just doesn't care to do much of anything. I'll wait and see how he is when I get home this evening. I sure don't want him to be in any more pain than he has to be but I want him to eat just a little something and definitely to drink water.

Hi Mary, I am sure you are tired from being up in the night and worrying about your boy. (Hugs to you) I totally understand; I would have been concerned also. It sounds as if you did everything you could. He probably was just reacting to the pain meds. I kept reading your posts and was relieved to see that he is behaving more normal today. I agree that it is scary when our beloved pets do not act "right", especially after any med procedure. Keep us posted. Kay in NC

When I came home a little while ago, I went to the basement to check on Specs and he actually came out from under the Hoosier cabinet but he didn't want to get too close to me. LOL I fed the rest of the Fur Posse and he turned up his nose so I made the baby food liquid that Dr. Lee suggested. Specs started lapping it up before I could syringe it but it must have hurt his mouth to do even that. So I squirted several syringes full in his mouth and when he finally turned his head away, I assumed he was satisfied. Back down into the basement he went, though. At least he has an appetite albeit a small one. I think I'll forego the Buprinex and if he seems to be in pain, then I'll give it to him but I'm hoping he'll be more like himself once he no longer has that in his system. I've tried to snap a pic of him but he keeps turning away and it's also hard to snap a pic while I'm on my belly. LOL His face isn't as swollen as yesterday. He looked like a chipmunk w/his cheeks full of nuts.
