I know I've asked for a lot of special prayers lately, given my husband's (who is doing REALLY well!) and my own surgeries, but there is unfortunately more. 2011 is not starting off well...
#1
We heard yesterday my father was admitted to the hospital with breathing trouble. Daddy is one of those who is never sick (he's 85) and this was a concern. First news was a "growth" near his thyroid pressing on his trachea. They could not biopsy without surgery; Daddy said leave it alone. Test results were due today to help with this decision. My sister (the oldest and Daddy's medical Power of Att'y holder) had been in contact with the hospital, called this morning, and found he had a really rough night. There are also more tumors around his thyroid; he's not coherent. The nurse said, "if this was my Father I'd get down here" (we're in Maryland, Daddy's in Florida). My sister is getting on a plane with her husband today and will update us as she hears news. Prayers for Pinot's Granddaddy.
#2
When my sister called my brother to tell him what was going on, she found in the process of injecting himself with his medication (three times a day), he has contracted a bacterial infection in his stomach; he'll probably have to have a part of his stomach removed as they don't know if they can clear it up. Prayers for Pinot's Uncle Stephen.

Thanks all!
Text from my sister says Daddy's in surgery; she's on a plane.
EDIT: the text came through my brother and he misunderstood something. I called the hospital. Daddy is NOT in surgery, he's in surgical ICU and they can't find a doctor to perform the surgery because it's too high risk. Daddy is breathing with a BiPap, this is very serious, and we're racing the clock. There are four very large tumors at the top of the sternum and the backside of the thyroid. The ICU nurse sounded very frustrated as well.

Received word from my sister: Daddy's now on a ventilator which, in this situation, is good news. The biggest part of the time element was they were afraid to put him through that because they didn't think he could take it. They now have a surgeon on board, but now need a thorasic (sp?) surgeon on the team for what's going to happen to the trachea. Still praying....

All my best wishes to you and your family; I hope your Dad gets the medical attention he needs and soon. Your strength is sure being tested these days:( and thank goodness Coop is on the mend! I can't imagine what this would all be like for you if that were not the case.
Make sure you get lots and lots of Pinot cuddles and hugs - somehow that makes all things better:)

Latest update: surgery scheduled for 5pm today. Daddy is stable now that the ventilator is in. They had a time with that; he is not a complainer, this has evidently been going on for years, and his airway was only 3mm. He's not really aware that much of comings and goings, but my sister said she's feeling better about his situation. Will continue to update as I hear.
Thank you all for your prayers and thoughts.

They took Daddy in to surgery early (2:15), my sister just called me, he's in recovery!! The thyroid was so large it was pushed very far into the chest cavity; it, and the corresponding growths, is gone. The trachea, at this point, is still intact. He'll be in recovery for a few hours, on the ventilator until tomorrow, and then we'll reevaluate.
Thank you all for your prayers!
By the way, Candace, I know Phred helped out - how could he not? MY FATHER'S NAME IS FRED!! ;);)

OMIGOSH! I thought the surgery would be a lot longer...but thank God and Phred he made it!
I think he will be able to breathe much more easily - and getting more Oxi-Jen into his system is bound to help him perk up.

Yes, Daddy is a VERY strong man, he's always seemed like an unmovable force to me...a very commanding presence (which came in handy, I imagine as a Lt. Commander and Air Craft Carrier Commander in the Navy ;) ).
Latest on my brother: his white cell count is responding, but there is a dead section of his stomach that will have to be removed.
Thank you for your prayers everyone! We're getting there, one step at a time!

Fun update!
Daddy's been under sedation since this saga began; they were worried about bringing him out (they had to restrain him previously) and getting the ventilator tube out. Well, no more worries...
They brought him out gradually while still ventilated; in the process, he quickly reached up and ripped out the ventilator tube. :) He's baaack! :) My sister actually had a conversation with him for the first time this afternoon, but the hospital has him restrained. She had to make him promise he wouldn't rip anything else out so she could have them release his arm to hold his hand. The oxygen is the next potential victim. ;)

Well, well, well! Just out of serious surgery and he has to be told to BEHAVE. :D Great news!
He probably wants to get the heck out of there, but they likely want to monitor him a bit longer...patience, Dad, patience. ;)
I wonder if he notices he is breathing better? I hope he is.:)
And your brother - sounds like a nasty infection. Still, I hope he will be able to keep most of his stomach. Prayers going out for him.

I thought I had kind of overwhelmed you all, so I held off for a bit, but there is big news! :)
As of 10pm this evening, Daddy will be moved to a REGULAR ROOM! He'll be out of ICU!! :) He was changed from no food to pureed mush late yesterday. My sister said his eyes went from slits to mostly open, he sat up in the big recliner and read a newspaper. :) A few days in a regular room, a few in a rehab center and we'll be home free! :D
Thank you so much for the prayers and thoughts everyone!

This is what is known in the trade as a therapeutic extubation :)
Over the years, I had several patients do this, and it always worked out for the best.
I'm so glad to hear he is doing well, and was transferred to a regular room.
