He is very sick. I thought I was going to lose him Christmas Day. I am so glad I didn't rush him to the vet because I would have put him down that day. Instead I monitored him and he pulled through. MUCH better today. He's out and about. Calling for Pouncer like usual. BUT... he's not eating or drinking.

We're going to the vet as soon as I post this. Please send all your prayers for my swett orange boy.

Heere he is Christmas Day at the height of his illness (I freaked that he was leaving me and realized I haven't taken pics of him lately) He looks fine in the pic - clear eyes, no second lid coming up. Serious airplane ears though

and then last night under the tree. Very content and happy down there. That is where he is now.

I haven't slept much in hte past few days. I have aserious headache. I know I will do what the vet suggests and am terrified its not going to be good. PLEASE keep the PT prayers going for him.

Glad to hear Allen is better. Do you have an idea what's wrong with him. I think his face looks a little hollow- I hope he continues to be better.

I'm back from the vet, but Allen is still there. They are doing a series of bloodwork on him. she's thinking something with the liver. He's not dying (yay!) but is one very sick cat. He's lost 7 pounds since his last visit, but I have been working on him losing weight. I jjust don't know how much weight loss is due to illness vs. me cutting back on portions.

Dr. D found flea dirt on him  I had no idea I had fleas. I haven't seen them on anybody, not even Callike with her blonde hair. So I spent $100 just on flea control. Another $200 on tests. I have no idea what else I'll spend on meds and special food. How do the cats know to get sick just as I'm about to get a work bonus? Every time I get a bonus, I spend it on vet care.

You have no idea how relieved I am that he's not dying. I'll keep you posted.

Aww, this just brings back memories of my Taz. But I'm so glad to hear that his illness seems to be fixable! :D Such great news!! I'm so sorry you've been so stressed out over the holiday worrying about Mr Allen. And I will hope that it is an easy fix (and inexpensive too) to get Allen back on the road to health again. :)

Kidney Failure. I have no idea what to do. Its terminal.... a matter of months if I try to "fix" him now. What type of life will he have? One of pain and misery? Save him for my own beneift? Or put him to sleep peacefully?

Oh Sweetie....I wish I knew what to tell you...you will do what is right for him and for you as well.

I can only send you my prays right now. Whatever you decide will be fine with us and fine with Allen...my vet always told me as long as they are willing to eat and walk around then let them be....they will let you know when it is time....not always sadly...I've found that out but I wish you the best with this hardest decision. My thoughts will be with you and Allen.

Just spoke to the vet. She said its 50/50 of him making it past thursday. She said he might make it home after treatment and she might not need to see him for a while. Or he could be in and out of the vet every few weeks. God this is hard.

I have serious issuees with quality of life. I went through this with Pouncer. He wwas constantly sick. Constantly on meds and he hated it. He was misreable. I knew if he got seriously sick again I would have let him go, because its not fair to him.

Now I have that decision for Allen. Like my husband said, he's had a great life. He was loved and happy. Is he happy now?

Oh my, Allen! You do look handsome under the Christmas tree!

Once he gets on some meds and subq fluids, he will feel (and look) better and can go several months with minimal intervention.

You can do the subq fluids right at home, they show you how.

I did it with Amber, and with . . . I think Ruffles?

My Sparkle is now in the early stages of CRF, so I am treating her, she is not on the fluids as yet.

Whatever you decide will be the right thing, as you have all the info direct from the vet, and you can see Allen.

Hugs to you at this time.

Oh no. :( I was hoping this would not be the diagnosis.
I can't even remember how long Taz went after he was diagnosed with it. But I do know I was giving him sub-q fluids for about two weeks. They didn't work very well for him, obviously. :( But I see here on PT that they have worked wonders for others and the cat has been around for a year or so longer.
You just have to decide if you want to take the chance and see if they will work for Allen. If you are willing to do the fluids (I never thought I would be able to do it, but I did it!) then give it a try. That's my opinion. But (as others said to me) only YOU will know when it is his time. I didn't really with Taz, but my vet carefully helped me understand. When the fluids weren't working there was nothing else we could do for him.
It is such a difficult thing to have to decide. But you just have to keep Allen in mind. Still to this day (over a year and a half after losing Taz) I have to remind myself that I did what was best for him.

((Hugs)) to you.

{{{{hugs}}}} Ask your vet about giving the fluids a try. They may give him many more months of comfortable living.
The vet can do the fluids the first couple of times and teach you how. That will also give you an idea if the fluids work for him.

He is a beautiful boy - you will do the right thing.:love:

I'm thinking its best to let him go. They say you know.... I feel like he was looking at me and telling me to do just that.

The vet has him on fluids at the moment. I figure to wait a few hours and see if he's perked up and taken interest in food. If not, I think I will let him go. Its a matter of quaility of life for him (as well as my other guys)

I don't want him to feel left out because he can't eat their food, or to be grumpy and start fights when they want to play with him. The fights he has been picking with the other the past few months have been pretty bad (lots of screaming and fur flying -- actual fur flying). See the scratch under his nose? Someone got him good a week ago. Harry had a matching scratch the same day so I think those two got into a nice little fight. Its usually Mikey and Allen. He's been rather testy lately. How fair is it to have him miserable and always fighting?

I swear I looked into his eyes and he told me to let him go.

Your post brings tears to my eyes because it's never ever easy. It's so hard but you know what is right for him and for you.

When I had to make the decision to let Ziggy go it was so hard because he seemed well even though he wouldn't be soon. I'm praying for you and for Allen. It's so hard and never easy. Please know we are here for you and Allen.

Take care, hugs,
Melissa

Give the fluids a go. If Allen perks up he may have a good life for some time to come.
You know that Filou survived for 5 years- and even the 2 or 3 crisis he experienced in his last year didn't slow him up. He loved the Royal Canin diet food and his extra goodies like egg yolk - up to goose fat;)
If the fluids don't make a difference then of course it would be time to let Allen go.:(

I am heartbroken. Goodbye my sweet, sweet boy. Keep Miss Nicki company. We will miss you.

RIP sweet Allen. Look up my Tabby at the RB. She will show you around.

Rest sweetly Allen and thank you for giving your mommy a lovely memory to keep close to her heart.

Kim, I have experienced this very day with both my RB kitties and yes, they let me know it was time. Didn't make anything easier however, the decision was the right one. Give the rest of your kitties a big hug - you and they will feel better for it.

My sincerest condolences for your loss, Betty

Thank you everyone. I am feeling a bit better now. I know he is at peace and running around with all my other RB pets. He loved SamDog, and they're back together again. He's probably jumping on Nicki right now, and she's probably saying "I thought I got rid of this orange brat!"

My eyes hurt from all the crying though. But I know I made the right choice for Allen.

I hugged Pouncer and told him I was sorry that his best friend is gone. I swear he told me that he knows and its ok.

The girls have been sooooo sweet. Abby hasn't left my side. She even sat on my lap today. When was the last time she did that? About 3 years ago! Flutter and Callie have been a shadow too.

Kim take comfort in knowing that your sweet boy had a wonderful life with you, and he did not have to suffer, it is the hardest ,but kindest decision one has to make, i lost my Ash due to complications of kidney failure, and it was very hard to say goodbye although i had been prepared for it for almost 19mths, so i understand your heartache, as do many others here.

Ashey boy you show Allen the ropes now, and make him welcome, RIP sweet furbaby, and may your meowie's heart heal in time, and may she feel at peace as you are. HUGS:love::love:

Allen is such a Great Owesome Orangie , and All Of Our Angels will be there to outfir Allen with his wings of Silver and Gold and usher him in as a member in good standing as an Awesome Angel Army recruit.
And there will be a buffet in Allen's honor with all of his favorites and he gets the first plate.
Allen will then start looking for that one palce in Paradise where you will all be together, but he will fly in and see his Pouncer , until you are all reunited in love.

I just took all of my Christmas decorations.... left a few green garlands by the fireplace and a picture. The rtest is all gone. I just don't want to have anything to do with Christmas right now. My Christmas was worrying about allen all day, so why should I have my home decorated to remind me of that?

This is twice in my life that I lost a cat at Christmas. When I was 9, my beloved Tony woke me up to tell me he was dying. We ran him to the Emergency vet back in 1981!!!! Nobody did that back then. Now Allen is with my beloeved Tiny and his predecessor. With nicki, Sammie, and all the other PT kitties.
