Even more sad because these people are working but just can't afford
the high costs of a child with severe disabilities. I thought this state had
agencies that were there to help folks like this.

I wonder if some place like The United Way or community or religious will be able to help. But surely there are better places to cut the budget than to abandon those in such need.

I am thinking you aren't fully aware of the high cost of medical care for those with debilitating disabilities. Those organizations suggested above are simply not equipped, nor set up to fund such costs/care. This person would need an adult daycare like facility, a 'workshop' as they are called here in Ohio. This is a county run program, but I believe it is funded by the state (and probably federally, as well). Further, it sounds like he needs ongoing medical care. That can cost thousands a month.

To hear that people are on the waiting list for 10 years,to obtain the medical/social assistance that they need is simply incomprehensible. It only encourages the types of horrific stories we read about in the news.

Sadly, I do not think this is only in Indiana.

That is so sad. In Illinois Gov. Quinn has tried to reduce services for children and adults with physical and mental disabilities. He's gotten serious resistance from both the disabled and mental health communities, though. I believe there is a waiting list for the medically fragile waiver program in Illinois.

Have to cut the deficit at all costs. Ghastly really. Welcome to the GOP.

Yeah, the day after the Nov election, our GOP Governor proposed cutting
unemployment benifits in Indiana. Now, I understand balancing budgets, but
I hate to see people kicked when they are already down.:(

I am. I was not thinking that those organizations could take over the entire burden of care, but could band together and find some ways to help people.
