My 10yr old cat Punky has not be eating very well & just seemed to
want to go off by himself to sleep for the last few days. I took him to the
Vet today. The Vet suspects FIP (feline Infectious peritonitis). Took x-rays
of his chest, his body is full of fluid & could barely see the lungs for the
fluid.:( She tried to drain some of the fluid to test, but was unsucessful.
She sent us home with pills(diuretic) to get rid of as much fluid as possible
to help his breathing. The prognosis is bad, there is no cure.:(:(

Will try to make him comfortable as possible & if he seems to improve
any, will try the chest x-rays again in hopes of finding another cause
besides FIP, something operable. (A very long shot) I am devastated.:(:(

I'm so sorry to read your sad news about Punky. I pray that the long-shot that it's not FIP comes true. If it is FIP, there really isn't anything much you can do except make him comfortable until it's time to let him go. He's not an elderly cat, and I always think that makes it even more difficult to say goodbye because we expect many more years. Please keep us posted on your beautiful boy.

Thank you for your kindness. Punky is not much better this morning.
Would not eat anything, drank a little water though. He looked so pitiful
this morning. He came up to Blackie (his good buddy) and sat beside him.
Normally that's the signal for Blackie to start grooming him, but instead,
Blackie didn't even look at Punky, just got up and walked away from him.:(
Punky just drifted off to the spare bedroom to his favorite sleeping spot.

I don't see how he could have gotten so sick so fast.:(:( The Vet said
it was possible that the other cats could come down with FIP as well,
but if they show no signs yet, they probably won't. No promises.:( I feel
like I'm in a bad dream.

Here is a picture of Punky as I'm so bad about posting my kitties pictures
much. I want you to see how handsome he is. He is the gray & white cat
in this picture with Smokey(dog) and Joey.(other cat)

Just a small update on Punky. Still not eating much of anything. A few
bites at best & then walks away. Had a soft & bloody stool this morning.:(
He sleeps a lot. He has found a bright sunny spot in the dining room floor
and he has settled there for now. He walks very slow & carefully, no running
no playing at all. One bright spot is he is very receptive to gentle tummy
rubs and he seems to enjoy that.:)

Johanna, He won't eat any wet food at all. Some of the canned stuff
with sauce, he will sniff the liquid part, but that's it. Punky is still showing
some interest in his favorite kibble, but only eats a few at a time. I do free
feed so it's always available if he wants it.

I know he's lost weight, but he still interested in watching (and reacting)
to the birds outside in the yard, or sleeping in the sunshine, or getting some
special attention from me. He acts good sometimes, othertimes he seems
very weak. He does not seem to be in any pain, but definately, not his old
bossy self. I might be naive, but I'm hoping he'll fool everybody & start
getting better any day now. Maybe the Vet was wrong about him.

an appt. for 1:15 today at the Vets.:( Punky is getting weaker by the day
and his eyes are full of pain. I am just being selfish to want to keep him
with me, but it just kills me that his life has to end this way.:( He was a big
strong boy and he has become a shell of his former self. I cannot let him
suffer any more with no hope of ever getting better.:( My poor Punky.:(

I'm so sorry to hear your latest news. Admitting it's time to say goodbye is the most difficult decision we have to make for our furry loved ones, but it's also the kindest decision when it comes to that point. You tried, Punky tried, but sometimes nothing can change the course of nature. I came across this poem when we had to say goodbye to our kitty, April, earlier this year. I hope it helps you cope with your sorrow, even a little bit. Punky will always have that special place in your heart.

Cat Poem

They will not go quietly,
the cats who've shared our lives.
In suptle ways they let us know
their spirit still survives.
Old habits still make us think
we hear a meow at the door.
Or step back when we drop
a tasty morsel on the floor.
Our feet still go around the place
the food dish used to be,
And, sometimes, coming home at night,
we miss them terribly.
And although time may bring new friends
and a new food dish to fill,
that one place in our hearts
belongs to them. . . and always will.

Punky is gone.:( He went to sleep easily & quickly and didn't fight the
procedure at all. Before he left I kissed his head & stroked his ears when
I told him about Rainbow Bridge. I told him to rest easy there & in time I
would be there too. I told him to wait for me & I would call to him when I
arrived. We would be together again.

He looked so peaceful & I hated to leave the room without him.:(:(
I spent some time with him afterwards & half expected him to wake up
again. I waited awhile until my mind was sure his spirit had left.:( I will
miss my little "timekeeper" kitty. Punky always reminded me when the cat
bowls became dangerously low.:)

I know it's been on here before-- but: Note #10-

A PET'S TEN COMMANDMENTS.........
1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.
2. Give me time to understand what you want of me
3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.
4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you.
5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.
6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.
7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you.
8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.
9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old.
10 On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so.

You did what you had to do, for Punky- and you saw him through it all... he knows it and you will be together again. God bless and may your pain be lessened by the knowledge that SO MANY here know it and have shared it- self included, too many times - as we've had to for our closest and most loyal friends.

You might think one cat, out of a total of five, wouldn't change things so radically, but it sure does.

It doesn't matter how many cats you have, each one is special on his/her own. When I had to put Dusty to sleep I had 8 cats that morning, and 7 that evening, and I cried for 2 days. I still miss her an awful lot 3 years later, even though I still have the other kitties here with me yet and love them too. There will never be another cat like Dusty.

Just when you think it's over.:(:(

Punky loved chedder cheese. I sometimes have the cheese cubes & crackers
as a snack in the evenings.Punky cold be in the basement, yet hear when I
opened the package of cheese cubes, and come running to get his piece.
He would either eat it on the spot, or bat it around like a toy. Either way,
he loved them.:)

The other day I was cleaning dust from behind the stairwell when I found
a old, stale cheese cube sitting there on the floor. I knew where it had come
from. My heart sank in my chest.:( I didn't want to throw it away, but I did.

I know how you felt when you found the cheese. You look at it with some wonderment - like it would still have a part of his soul in it because he had played with it.

But then the tears come and the pain takes over and you have to turn away - the loss is too fresh.
