"Don't Throw us away" is a great program:
Shelter dogs and inmates are locked away behind bars, without a chance at a new life. Approximately 2 million inmates are incarcerated, while 6-8 million dogs enter into shelters every year. Extreme animal overpopulation forces 4 million pets to be euthanized annually. Instead of throwing these lives away, prison dog partnerships provide homeless dogs with the love and training to make them adoptable, while inmates get rehabilitated, allowing them to re-enter society as productive citizens. “Don’t Throw Us Away” partners six inmates in a CT prison with six dogs rescued from a kill-shelter. Each dog is given medical care and neutered. Over 8 weeks, inmates work with a professional dog trainer to prepare dogs for adoption into a loving family. After completing the training, the dogs’ bios are posted on the national adoption website, Petfinder, and families visit the prison to adopt their new dog, experiencing the partnership firsthand.
