View Full Version : Please Say A Prayer For Delilah~
Daisy and Delilah

I've been so upset I couldn't post until now.
I came home from a family dinner on Sunday night and Delilah was tilting her head to the left. It was obvious that something was wrong. She seemed normal other than that. When we left, she was fine.
I called the vet on Monday morning and they could take her right away. After them running every test in the book, x-rays and a thorough exam, her vet still wasn't sure what was causing the tilt. She is also losing her balance and falling over. She can't jump up on anything so I have to pick her up into the car and on the bed.
She put her on antibiotics and some motion sickness pills. I am hoping and praying it's Vestibular Syndrome which is an inner ear problem. Could be a fluid problem or infection.
Her vet found that her heart is a bit enlarged so they did an ECG on her. It proved her heart is enlarged but all other heart function is fine. All bloodwork came back good.
I've read a million things and most everything says this syndrome mimics a stroke and it's heartbreaking to watch your pet go through such agony. Believe me, heartbreak is my middle name with her being like this. I am beside myself.
If anyone can pray for her I will be eternally grateful.
Her vet recommends an ultrasound. Is anyone familiar with an enlarged heart and know if this is completely necessary? The charge is $350.00 but she is worth every penny if I really need to get it for her. I think I will feel terribly worse if I don't explore everything.
Thanks for the prayers and I would love to know if anyone knows about these conditions.
I am so good at telling everybody else not to beat themselves up but I now know I am crazy to say that to myself. I can't help but wonder what I could have done differently.:(

Do not beat yourself up about this, just concentrate on loving Delilah, and we'll say a prayer for her and you, okay?

Thank you, Karen. I love her so much I can't stop crying. I watch her fall over and she can't look at me straight anymore. I'm just sick over it.
I've never known a dog like Delilah. She is the sweetest dog on earth. I just want her to be well.
I really appreciate your prayers.

I feel your concern and frustration. Poor Delilah.
I'm wondering if she may have had a mini stroke. RB Cody acted funny one night. Got up, barely, and bumped into walls and couldn't keep his balance. It was scary. The next morning, the vet said he suspected a mini strole, after he looked into his eyes. He didn't do any other tests since , by morning, Cody seemed fine.
I sure wish our beloved pets could talk. I'm sending a gazillion prayers that darling D starts to get back to normal soon.:love:

Thanks to all of you. I have to stay positive for Delilah and Daisy.
Karen: Pam also suggested a possible mini stroke. Her vet didn't say anything about it but it's possible. She did say the head tilt and lack of balance may not go away. I read tonight that most dogs survive strokes.
I'm so grateful. Please keep the prayers coming. I can't sleep or eat or even think straight.:( My poor baby.:(

Oh Terry - my heart is breaking right along with yours. I know what you're going thru, and the worry overtaking you because you don't really know for sure, what is making your baby so sick. Please don't blame yourself - put your energies into helping Delilah, and it doesn't sound like there were any signs that this was coming anyway. I've been there with the guilt trip, and it just doesn't help anything, and will only wear you down.
I've never experienced anything like this with my pooches, so I can't be of any help to you there. Both my guys have a heart murmur tho, but I don't know if an enlarged heart goes along with that or not, but they go along as normal, and the murmurs haven't gotten any worse in several years. Neither has ever had an ultrasound.
Many prayers and good wishes going out to little Delilah and you, and of course for Daisy too. I'm praying so hard for a good outcome. Myndi and Sparky are sending along doggie kisses for all of you too.
Hang in there Terry. I know that you're a strong person, and little Delilah needs exactly that right now from her Mom.
Please keep us up to date with any news.
BTW - how old is she?

Just seeing this now. You got prayers coming!! My cat Rocky acted like that for a few days after he had his teeth cleaned. The vet said he had an ear infection from the procedure. He got better after a few days and medicine. How is Delilah today? How old is she?

Terry, it does sound like the vestibular syndrome; had a dog with that years ago. Took a few weeks, but things settled down.
Prayers for Delilah and for you and Daisy as well!

Thanks so much, everybody!!! I am so happy to be in this wonderful community. I couldn't believe I would be the one asking for prayers but it's real.
Delilah just turned 11 on August 1st. I am hopeful and optimistic that she is a little better this morning. We appreciate the thoughts and prayers so much. I will update as soon as I can. My Mom is going through some trying times again and she is also keeping me busy.
Thanks again everybody!! We all thank Myndi and Sparky for the kisses, Ellie.:) I sure know you have just been through an ordeal yourself.

It makes me cry to see how many people care. THANKS EVERYBODY!!! Me and the D's are so appreciative!!!
I am excited that she is a little better for sure. I feel I can confirm that. It scares me to death alright!! I think I could walk around with an arm dangling and it wouldn't faze me. When D and D are ailing, I could be checked into a hospital from worrying myself into a stupor.:(

Wow! This is crazy! It IS what seems to be happening to Sparky... She didn't say anything about his head tilting so if it did, Rie just didn't notice it maybe..
If it's that Vestibular Syndrome, Rie is going to tease me that he got it from me with this bad vertigo I have had the last 2 months..

This is amazing. First you get it Laura and then Delilah and now Sparky. What is going on? I've never heard of this until now.

I am so sorry I'm just seeing this. I'm glad to hear that she seems to be getting better though. I know how stressful it is when they are sick and you don't know why. I went through something similar when Zoee had her "attacks" which we think might have been seizures.
This is definitely something you could not have prevented or predicted. It sounds like it just happens (whatever IT is). So please don't beat yourself up over it. You are a wonderful dog mom, don't you forget it! ;)

09-02-2010, 09:46 AM
Thanks again to everybody!!
She seems about the same as yesterday. As we go through these antibiotics I hope to see more and more improvement. Her vet said she is probably confused and scared that she is disoriented and off balance. I want to say she is showing improvement by not being so scared to try things. She did seem really scared a couple of days ago.
I am so grateful for all these prayers and thoughts. Thanks a million!!

You give her another kiss from me, as you may recall, I am deaf on one side and also have balance issues if I am overtired, or some place where I cannot see well. I am glad she is doing a bit better, and hope she continues to recover.

Thank you, Karen. Kisses delivered. The vet said she may never get over the head tilt so I am trying to accept that. Thanks for telling me about yourself, Karen. It gives me hope.

Yay Delilah! Keep on getting better little one - and no more scares for your Mom. I've given Myndi her orders too! What gives with you little girls lately, anyway??
Terry - was a diagnosis ever determined? Was it an ear problem, or a small stroke, or don't the docs know?
Sending out continued prayers and good vibes, that the ultrasound shows nothing serious. Give her a kiss for me - and of course for Daisy too!

Ellie, the doctor never did say what she thought it was. I am assuming they give the antibiotic and hope for the best. If it doesn't get better they go to the next step.
Delilah is doing great!!! Thanks so much for your well wishes and the girls thank for their kisses. We all thank you for the hugs. I can actually breathe normally again.
I hope Myndi and Sparky are doing great too. I don't know what is going on with these girls. I was under the impression that our pets aren't supposed to get sick. I know I need to try to expect something different so I have the strength to take care of them in case anything else(heaven forbid)goes wrong.
I'll report in tomorrow after the ultrasound. I've been unable to get on the internet for two days until just now. I hope I don't have this problem again tomorrow.
Kisses to your crew, Ellie, and hugs to all!!

Thanks alot Kaitlyn and Ellie and the Fuzzbuttz!!
I think the vet will wait to see how she is when the antibiotics are finished. She told me again she may always have a slight head tilt but I'm not seeing it much now. However, she is still doing kinda an "exorcist" thing to take her treats.
Since she was so good yesterday they went ahead with her vaccination update and expressed her anal glands. She's a little tired today after her big day yesterday.
Thanks again to everybody for the thoughts and prayers. Me and the girls are thrilled to have such good friends!!:)

Oh Terry. I don't make it on much anymore but I happened to stop by and I saw this thread. First of all I am so very very glad that little Delilah is doing better. I can so very much relate to your panicked fears when something was wrong. I get exactly the way you describe if something is wrong with one of the dogs. I can't eat, I can't sleep, I feel sick and obsessed with wanting to know they will be ok, wanting whatever is wrong to go away. It's a miserable horrible feeling. I just wanted to send my love and that I will also say a prayer that Delilah continues to be healthy and normal. ((hugs))

Jess and Carmen, it's so good to hear from both of you. I miss you two very much. Thanks a million for the kind words. I hope all is well these days.
I am back to normal now thank goodness. It is the scariest thing when they are sick.
As they both get older I am basically thinking now that anything can go wrong so I have to learn how to relax.
Kisses to your crew Jess and to your's too, Carmen!!
I hope we see alot more of you lovely ladies in the board.:)
