Hey everybody! Just wanted to introduce myself and I thought this was an appropriate place since I have just adopted my first dog. I never had a dog growing up (I'm 24, by the way), but my husband's family always had dogs. They were up to 5 when we started dating 5 yrs ago, but are now back down to 3 due to two losses from old age in the past couple of years. :( Anyway, my husband and I just bought our first home, and we adopted a dog from an SPCA organization to enjoy our large backyard. Susie, our new doggie-daughter, is 1 yr old and has been in a foster home for 6 months. She is just an outside dog now, but we will house-break her so that she can be an inside/outside dog. :D

We are picking her up on Saturday, and I'm really excited. I want to attach pictures, but for some reason they are showing up as links. Does anyone know why? Anyway, I will probably be lurking around this site and posting questions whenever they come up. I imagine that I'll have lots of questions since she's my first dog.
HEY! Welcome to Pet Talk! You live right by me! I just moved to Cedar Park a couple months ago.
Which SPCA did you adopt Susie from? I work/volunteer at both the one here and in Austin! I was trying to think if I knew a Susie doggy but I don't think I do. You said she was in foster care though. If you pick her up on Saturday and its the Austin one, I'll be there all day Sat :)
Good luck with your new baby girl and maybe I'll see you around :)

Let's see ... first things first:
Welcome to Pet Talk!
Congratulations on becoming a first-time dog-mom!
Welcome, and welcome, what kind is Susie? If it shows up as a link, that's okay, that's what attachments do. To embed an image, it needs to be already on the web somewhere, then you type [img ] -then the URL-then [ /img] but with no spaces in any of it, and it'll just show up in your post!

Oh, I get it. Thanks for the help, Karen.
aly, I found her on petfinder.org and she was with the Highland Lakes SPCA in Marble Falls. That's why you couldn't remember her.
Susie is a hound or pointer mix. She has a great sense of smell, and she likes to sleep in her spare time, which they tell me is typical of a hound. :) She might have a tiny bit of blue heeler in her based on her coat, but she really doesn't look at all like a cattle dog. Here's a pic (also my avatar):

Welcome, welcome, welcome! Susie is gorgeous! You'll really enjoy it here, but be careful, it's VERY addicting :)
I have two rescue dogs and a rescue cat myself. Graham, Kersey & Minion. They are my pride and joy. Life is not the same without animals, that's for sure. Once you have a beloved pet, you will never know how you lived without one!

Just saw your message. Sorry. Susie is doing great! We picked her up on Saturday and she was a little frightened of us and her surroundings that day. By the next day, she was much more comfortable with us but was still kind of spooked by the new place. She's been very clingy, but yesterday she started getting a little more bold about exploring her surroundings. She has only had one accident in the house (and that was because I spooked her right after she woke up), and she's figured out why we take her outside so much because now she goes as soon as we go outside. We were waiting as long as 30 minutes for her to "Go Potty". We did have one unfortunate incident. Monday we both had to go to work all day... we both work M-F (8-5) with pretty long commutes on top of that. We put her in the backyard, and that afternoon she got tired of being alone. She broke through the fence... literally. She broke the bottom off 2 boards on our fence gate. She crossed a busy 4 lane highway near our neighborhood and started sniffing around the parking lot of a vet's office. They took her inside and called us... thank goodness we had a tag made for her at Petco the weekend before. My husband got the message when he got home and raced to their office before they closed at 6pm. She was completely unharmed, but we have been keeping her in the garage for the past couple of days because we can't trust her in the yard, especially with a hole in the gate. We're hoping to install an electronic containment system to reinforce our fence this weekend. Other than that, she has been adjusting very well and we couldn't be happier. :D

Welcome to pet talk and Suzie is beautiful. No wonder you picked her.
Is Susie crate trained? Thats a long time to be in a crate but maybe you can just have her in the crate in the house for a few weeks until she learns she belongs there and you can trust she won't bust out again.
I'm glad everything else is going good :)

She is crate trained but it seems too long to leave her in there. She is in it all night and between work and our commutes she'd be in there for about 11.5 hours during the day too. I know they say crating them isn't mean and we've put her in there as long as 3 hours on weekends (and about 8 hours every night), but 11.5 hours seems extreme to me. She's actually getting used to being away from us and doesn't act as upset when we leave now. She's stopped fighting with us when we shut the door. Now she just sits back and looks sad. Everyday she gets more and more curious and bold. I'm so happy the weekend is here so we can spend more time with her.
