Naples pizzas 'cooked with coffin wood'
Italian prosecutors believe pizza in Naples may be baked in ovens lit with wood from coffins dug up from the local cemetery.
Investigators in Naples suspect thousands of small, lower-end pizza shops and bakeries may "use wood from caskets to keep ovens burning."
"Pizza, one of the few symbols of Naples that endures... is hit by the concrete suspicion that it could be baked with wood from coffins," according to Italian daily Il Giornale.
According to tradition, Neapolitan pizza should be cooked in a stone oven with an oak-wood fire.
"A gang might have set up a market for coffins sold to hard-hearted owners of bakeries and pizzerias looking to save money on wood," Il Giornale said.
Neapolitan pizza was invented between 1715 and 1725, with the world-famous Margherita variant first cooked up in 1889.
Tradition has it that queen Margherita of Savoy asked one of Naples' famed pizzaioli to come up with a dish for the people.
The result, which provides the basis for most pizzas enjoyed around the world, represented the colours of recently unified Italy: green basil, white mozzarella and red tomatoes.
Naples' graveyard has long been hunting ground for thieves, last year, 5,000 flower pots were stolen from the cemetery.

Wait, what happened to the people INSIDE THE COFFINS?
Not any 'extra' I'd want on my pie?

Richard could you please provide me with the link for this info. I live in Italy and have not seen anything in the papers about this. But you have to understand something....Naples is another world. There is a branch of the Carabinieri that 'controls' the bread in Naples. The Naples harbor is not controlled by the 'coast guard' (guarda di finanza). They do not even enter there. (There are reasons for it) It really is another world. I can explain more but please PM if you want to know anymore.

Thanks for the link Richard. I just searched the site of Il Giornale (side note: which is owned by Silvio Berlusconi not by his family as reported) found the article.
These area couple of lines about the coffin wood. 'The eye of the investigators is pointed mainly to the pizza of the lowest order, that in Naples there are thousands. Investigators suspect that the coffins are shredded and then blended into the mixture then used to power the ovens.'
And this is to give a general idea about things in Naples. 'But the real problem is the cemetery, considered a seaport, accessible to all, at any time of day, where everyone can do what he wants without hindrance. The lootings are a daily occurrence, especially in the so-called quadrilateral cemetery of illustrious men, where statues, coats of arms are constantly stolen. Last year in a congregation were stolen even five thousand vases for flowers: a looting in broad daylight, not even a complaint.
A gang may have set the market for coffins for resale to owners of pizza ovens and the unscrupulous determined to save on the expense of firewood. On the other hand, to realize the state in which they reduced most of the twelve cemeteries citizens, just to jump in the two most important Poggioreale. It is now a daily spectacle which presents itself to visitors: uncovered coffins, human remains abandoned in the streets as if they were garbage. "The cemetery reflects the city. It is in disarray as roads and as are the offices and public health. No wonder that certain things happen: graves uncovered, thefts continue, vandalism, "says Andrea Santoro, president of the municipal committee of inquiry on cemeteries.'
Here is the link to the original article. Sorry but it is in Italian of course.

No, I THINK I know what is going on. I come across stories that completely boggle the mind. I am boggled.
I can imagine the bodies in the street and stuff like that. Then, in one corner
of the cemetery, there are the graves that no one will mess with, those belong the the Corleone Family?:(
