The farmers in Alberta, like those elsewhere, want to get their planting off to a good start. Alberta can be quite drought-ridden, so even when it snows late in the season, one commonly hears, "We need the moisture."

Mike Drew took this series of photos for the Calgary Sun newspaper - and they are stunning, as well as informative.

Those are really beautiful photo's. When does your growing season start, that means when jack frost no longer is a threat? Here we are in zone 4 & last night jack frost hit. Our growing season starts May 15th but we have had frost into June some years. The humidity is what makes stuff grow here. We get plenty of moisture & if we don't the clay soil holds the moisture a very long time. We had a cool summer last year with not to many humid days & the corn crop almost didn't make it with October being nasty cold & November warming up with Indian Summer. Now it seems we are 3 weeks ahead on fruit trees blooming, & strawberries in bloom. One thing about snow this time of year it will melt sooner & things will be warming up. :)
