Hi All- Long time no posts! I haven't been here in a while, so here's what's been going on with my two lovely orange kitties:
My 7 1/2 year old, Ollie, was diagnosed with IBD about 7 months ago. He was losing a lot of weight (down from about 7 lbs to 5 lbs) and had chronic diarrhea (which he's had ever since I took him in at 8 weeks old), and was vomitting fairly often, so I finally went to a new vet. This vet was SO much more helpful than my last one. The vet put Ollie on Purina Gastrointestinal EN dry and canned food, as well as a probiotic called FortiFlora and prednisolone. He'll be on the EN food and probiotic indefinitely, but we were able to wean him off the pred after a few months. He also started weekly vitamin B-12 shots, which the vet said new research was showings cats with chronic diarrhea were usually deficient in vitamin B-12. We're down to monthly shots now (thank goodness, because at $16 a pop this was starting to hurt). Ollie was all the way up to 8lbs- a new record for him! He's been off the pred for a good 3 months now, and I've noticed he's looking a little skinny again. The vet said to keep an eye on him and we'll see how he is next month. His poo is still not completely solid, but it's much better than it was- and he's not having any more accidents outside the box, so that's a major triumph in my book!
Our 6 year old big boy (he's a good 18 lbs), Stewie, just this weekend started having some issues with his poo. Sigh. I noticed he was all dirty "back there" on Sunday, so we cleaned him up the best we could, and yesterday was the same deal. Stew has NEVER had issues with poo. Never. I'm hoping he just got a bad can of food (I threw out what he was eating- some sort of Friskies) and starting giving him some of Ollie's EN canned stuff instead- they both eat the dry EN. I'm going to watch the litter boxes like a hawk for the next few days and see if he starts to clear up. Stew is also our giant 'fraidy cat- he has panic attacks in the car so I really don't want to drag him to the vet unless absolutely necessary.
Any home "cures" for a bout of diarrhea? I think I remember trying pumpkin or plain yogurt with Ollie back in the day, but his issues were far greater than just diarrhea. Thanks in advance!!
