Last Friday on my way home from work Bruce called me and he was frantic. He said a momma duck was out front and some of her babies had fallen down in the storm drain. As he was talking to me the rest of them fell too. :(
He called Animal Control, but they had to deal with emergencies first and said this was the 10th call they'd received that day about the same thing happening.
When I got home momma duck was wandering around the grate quacking up a storm! The babies were also very loud. I was so sad for her and them.
A few minutes later the neighbors kids and friends were outside and one boy was screaming at the momma duck. I quickly marched out there and told him of the situation with her babies (mind you, he is not even 4 years old yet). He ran and told his dad about it. His dad and another couple from around the corner came down to look. After standing and discussing the situation for a few minutes, the woman said she could probably reach in and get them. She had very long arms!
She began bringing the scared babies out to the worried momma duck one by one. :D When there were about 4 left she could not reach them. So we were about to just wait for AC to come rescue the rest. But she was determined and asked for a pool net. Luckily the neighbor that was out with us has a pool so he went and got his.
We successfully rescued all ELEVEN  babies! During the rescue another neighbor came out and began to shoo them into her backyard. She waited until we got the last one then we helped get them safely into her backyard.
I was so happy that lady was there at that exact time. Who knows how long it would have taken AC to get out here. I gave her a BIG hug!! :D
Of course I got some pictures!! :D
After some were out the momma duck took them FAR away from the grate.

I even got a picture of the rescuer in action!! :D I was so upset about the babies I can't even remember this womans name....darn it!
