For the Newer Pet Talkers, and anyone else who hasn't seen the
sometimes "lengthy" posts devoted to Planning these Events,
and the always enjoyable "Reports" (complete with extensive
Photo Coverage) of the Events ~

Here's a capsule summary of What Goes On:

We "Gather" at the very nice Hancock County Park District "Dog Park" in the
north-western corner of OHIO.
Facilities include:

* A 2-acre fully fenced OFF-leash Dog Park - with picnic tables, running water,
a few shade trees, grass, a lil mud, a collection of toys & balls -
a fine place to let a Friendly Pooch *romp* with other dogs.

* And 100 feet away ~ An enclosed (on two sides) Covered Picnic Pavilion
with concrete floor, picnic tables to seat 90 or so, electrical outlets,
2 charcoal grills - and enough Food & Covered Dishes to feed a mid-sized army!
(We NEVER go away hungry!!)
We Reserve and Rent the Pavilion - so there's no risk of it being "occupied"
by anyone except our Pet Talk Gang.

* Within 500 feet - there are two CLEAN Rest Rooms ~ OK, they don't *flush* -
but they ARE "clean", have concrete floors, and locking doors!

* A large, paved parking lot is within sight of the Dog Park and Pavilion.

* Many wooded Trails through the beautiful Park are available, but most
Folks hang with the Gang in the Dog Park or at the Pavilion.

* Food is casual / picnic stuff - everyone brings a lil extra to share - and as
said before - ya won't be hungry when you leave!

We can't stress enough that EVERYone is More than Welcome!!
We were all "strangers" when we came to our "first one" -
and most everyone who has been to one keeps coming back!

NEW This Year ~~~
The Hancock Park District has DROPPED the requirement that the DOGS have to be "Registered"
to enter the Dog Park area, and NO Fees will be charged.
BUTT ~~~ PLEASE NOTE:
The Rules REQUIRING that ALL Doge have the following are STILL IN EFFECT:

1) COPY (originals won't be returned) of the Dog's
. . Annual Vaccination Record (including distemper) from the VET...
. . (A Copy of the Office Visit Receipt is fine if the SHOTS
. . are noted & has Vet's Name on it).
. . DATE of Shots needs to be within ONE Year of now.

2) COPY of RABIES Vaccination Receipt ...
. . DATE within 1 or 3 years - depending on the vaccine used;
. . Most Rabies Receipts show an EXPIRATION date for the shot -
. . Rabies Vacc must be "current" (not expired).
. . (Fido should be *wearing* the Rabies "Tag".)

3) All Dogs must also be "Licensed" by the City, Town, County,
or State where you LIVE. Fido should be *wearing* his/her License Tag.

You should make and carry COPIES of all these documents with you every time
you visit the Dog Park. If there's an "incident" (Fido is accused of http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/eek.gif *biting* someone) -
you'll be required to PROVE the above requirements have been met by Fido.

Some "revisions" to the MapQuest Directions & Routings

Every year they like to "adjust" things ... shift the number ranges on a street ...
change a routing ... or just change stuff for the heck of it! Grrrrr!

I'll reprint the previous How To - and change a few things to try to catch up
with MapQuest's 2010 changes. Believe it or not, the Dog Park hasn't moved -
but MapQuest would certainly make you think it moved!

The Dog Park is INside the Hancock Park District's "Riverbend Recreation Area";
about a half mile south of Ohio Route 568;
and just north of the North-East Corner of the big Findlay Reservoir.

Big SQUARE Blue Lake; south-east of downtown Findlay.

OK - so what changed?

* BE PREPARED: No matter where you're coming from, Map Quest will probably
show a different route for the last 10 - 15 miles - different from last year's route.
Use whatever you're comfortable with or remember ... there aren't ANY roads or bridges
that are closed ... and I've driven ALL the various routes that MapQuest can suggest.
NO route is really much better than another --- miles are about the same
and drive time isn't drastically altered.

If you think your mapping program or GPS is really sending you around Robinhood's Barn -

The news has been streaming around the dog park. I hang around with a lot of the frequent visitors/regulars seeing as we're always there. And I kind of feel like they would have opened it already if they were planning on it because they were out there to hook up the hose and run it ALL the way along the fence to the side we are on.

No signs or anything about it... so maybe hopefully it's just rumors??? But I kind of get the feeling its not...

It's NOT a rumor ... I called Miz Margie in the Office ... :(

The PLAN is to:

1) They planted an OSU "Dawg Park Blend" of grasses designed for Dog Parks.

2) Seeding (of West side) was done last fall after the drains were dug in

3) "They" sugested NO Dawgs all fall, winter, spring, and summer to allow
. . the grass to develop roots and mature

4) Open the West side, CLOSE the East side in the Fall of 2010

5) Till & Seed the East side just in time for the grass to sprout and be
. . strong enough to srvive the 2010-2011 winter.

6) Do without the East side for most of spring & summer, 2011.

7) Tim B (my ole Buddy) the Parks Daily Manager, is retiring in June/July -
his Replacement has been chosen (it's a *seekrit*) and will be welcomed
aboart the Good Ship Hancock next week.

Last year they closed half of it to seed and put drainage in one side. We were hoping they would open it this year, but it looks like it won't be until next year/end of this year?? I am wondering if I should bring one of the 3 dogs I am fostering, Jasper. He is about 1 year old, and was just neutered on April 29th. Think that is too soon? A month? I would leave the two pups behind- 8 month old aussie xs. The girl is just too timid for such an occasion, and I wouldn't want to take away the boy, as he brings security and company to her.

Some of you know I am long term fostering (very long, LOL) two puppies and a dog. I have decided to adopt the dog, and his name is Jasper. I want to bring him with me to the dog park this weekend. He needs more socialization.

The two puppies are, from what we can tell, "his". They are a lot less socialized than Jasper. In fact, the female- Bella spends most of her time hiding if anyone else is around- even Jonah. She has made great strides in the 6 weeks I have had her- great strides. But, she still hides. Rusty, the male, is much better. He is too much of a stinker to stay in the background- LOL.

I wonder if bringing the puppies is such a great idea. I don't think they will really become socialized from one interaction at a dog park, and is the 2.5 hour trip x 2, really 'worth it' to them. Bella would, most likely, stay crouched in a corner. She wouldn't interact with such a large crowd- I can nearly bet my life on it. Taking Rusty and leaving Bella would really seem unfair. I have a hard enough time walking Jasper alone...LOL, Rusty cries and cries. I can't imagine leaving Bella by herself all day.

I can get a neighbor to watch over them- they stay outside all day anyhow as it is right now.

What are other's opinions on this?

Hmm... Well, it's really up to you. I personally, would bring them. You don't have to spend all your time inside the dog park. We have the pavilion outside the dog park and people will stay in there and talk. You can also take a stroll through the park to give her a break. Although... I can understand how hard it is to take care of three dogs out in public! Lol But it's so much fun... and all the pet talk dogs are very sociable... so it would only be good meetings... can't speak much for some of the Findlay residents :) But most of them are good. :) And if you don't like one, you can just go to the pavilion for a bit! :) It's up to you. :)

Hmmmmm ...
I'd love to play with ALL of them ... but I'd bet the two Pups would
be a LOT happier left at the Homestead to be spoiled by the neighbor!

Bella sounds like she needs some gentle PEOPLE socialization, then some
small-crowd puppy play. Have you looked for a local Dog Park, or even a
Kids' Playground where folks can take well-behaved dogs? Break the Pups
in with a small crowd, then bring 'em on the Fourth of July or Labor Day
to meet The Mob and join The Gang for some fun!
You really want the Pups' first dog park expierence to be a low-stress, FUN
event that they remember as a pleasant time. Cowering in a corner
trying to avoid the rowdy hooligans might not be a good introduction to
the world of dog parks.

Jasper ought to be old enough to hold his own and enjoy the bigger crowd.

No matter if you bring one, two, or three - we'll try to make the Kids feel
welcome!

After more thought, I am going to bypass this weekend. It is going to be too much stress for Jasper (at this stage), with the car sickness, leaving the two pups all day (with my two neighbors both being gone all weekend long, so no real 'watchers' for them), no money, not sleeping cause of Minnie crying all night in the crate.

Just too much for me right now. I hope to make September's trip, though!!

Hey, what's this with everyone ditching us? We were really excited about seeing Johanna and Noah again and meeting the new dog. Ashley, you know how much we enjoy seeing you and Jackie Loo. Kimmy, what job is worth missing the dog park gathering for? Heidi, we'd love seeing that new baby girl! Just teasing. I understand when things don't work out. My dad died last Memorial Day weekend so I wasn't sure how that would work out with leaving my mom alone but as far as dates go - he died on May 23 which was last weekend and my sister and I spent Saturday fixing up the area around his grave and Sunday planting my mom's yard with flowers so I think I should be good there. Probably will try to run to tiffin sometime during the weekend or maybe next week during an evening.

Looking forward to tomorrow. See you all then!

I'm surprised no one has checked in yet - I left around 5:30pm or so - and have had a pleasant evening at home. :) Phred was last to leave. Diana and Carl left ahead of me.
Small crowd but it was nice - not many locals either - must have been the heat - it was warm. Keegan had had about enough after we ate - but she made it thru a little longer. :)
I didn't take many pics but more than I've taken the last couple times! I know Anna was snapping away so she probably will have more. She has to work tomorrow, I know, so not sure when she will check in.
Anna commented that we needed puppies b/c our old dogs just weren't having as much fun as they used to. Its more for the people to get together. Delta and Remy sure had a blast! :)

It's great to see all of you again. Oh my, Diana, your grandkids are getting so big! The pups all look good , if a bit grayer around the snooter. Anna, my heart just melts to see beautiful Roxey again, and Huney looks cuter than ever! Got a chuckle out of Spotty-boy's "action" shot, lol. I hope he & Jack get to meet one day, gosh, they'd be quite a pair! Thanks for sharing your pictures, everyone.
