He went in for teeth cleaning this morning. As they were injecting the anesthetic agent, his heart stopped. They immediately gave him Epi, and his heart was back to normal.

This had nothing to do with his murmur - but was a reaction to a specific med :(

So she wanted him to be observed over night and get fluids to flush out every last vestige of the drug. We took him to the Animal Hospital, and he is in the ICU for the night - complete with warming blanket and TLC.

Should be fine by morning and we can bring him home. If he ever needs his teeth cleaned again, he'll get gas.

I read the post about his ultrasound & heart health findings. I'm sorry
to hear he had such a bad reaction:( I hope he feels better tomorrow.
He is a handsome boy.:)

How terrifying! I am SO glad he will be home soon.

When do they think it will be safe for him to get a dental done?

HUGS and give that poor boy lots of cuddles from me (after you are done with yours!).:love::love::love:

I just spoke with the hospital - Duffy is doing well. But he hasn't eaten. I told them he probably doesn't like their food - try some of the grocery-store type canned stuff!

I'll speak with them again early in the morning, and hopefully bring him home. I'm not worried about the eating - he will when he gets home.

Candace - he did get his teeth cleaned today, once his heart started beating again. But we'll think twice about it in the future.

He will get lots and lots of loving when he's home. Funny - we have 6 cats, so the absence of one shouldn't make things seem that much different. But it feels like there is this monster void here right now - like we're down 3 instead of just 1 :(

Grace - my goodness, what a fright! He WILL eat when he gets home...he is a CAT, and won't deign to eat the nasty vet stuff! ;)

You might ask the vet about prevention so he won't need as many cleanings, or even another one.

I have had my two boys for about 5 and 4 years respectively - and they have yet to have a dental! Might be just dumb luck and genetics - but I give them Medi-Treats (from the vet - nice fishy smell!), and also Greenies. Mostly I give hard treats that are organic or a good quality. Several a day seem to keep dentals away.

Also - they get a little wet food in the morning, and just kibble the rest of the time. Hard food and treats help clean the teeth, according to my vet.

Sorry to run on...just hope poor Duffy doesn't have to face this again for a long time, if ever!

Wow, that was scary and a close call, too! I'm glad that Duffy is doing better now. :) It wasn't Ketamine Hydrochloride by any chance, was it?

That's scary. I hope the vet wasn't using the recalled ketamine (wrong dosage on the label.) I'm glad he feels better.

Ketamine was not the culprit - they don't use it at our Vet, and have a big sign on the door stating there is none inside.

DUFFY IS HOME!!
We picked him up just after 8am. He never did eat for them, but has had several small servings since arriving here. Reese has been following him all over the house, but none of the others have shown much interest. She just wonders why he left her for 24 hours.

He purred up a storm when I took him out of the carrier. It's so good to have him here - safe and well. Hopefully he will never need surgery of any kind in the future.

Thank you all for your prayers and kind thoughts
