I bought my daughter a pom puppy for Christmas, only cause she has wanted one for years and I decided at 17 she is old enough to take care of one. Any how Roxy is 4 months old and only weighs 2 lbs. Today she jumped off the top of my stair case and landed on the landing which was a ten foot drop. She broke both bones in her front legs, so tomorrow the Dr. is going to pin it and either cast it or splint her leg. The Dr. said that it may not heal and we will have to go to a specialist and try to plate it. But since her leg is so small it may not be able to be plated, the next option will be to remove the leg. God I hope not.The picture is Roxy sleeping the picture of the little girl hugging the chow is my daughter when she was little. http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l176/whomeee/th_GetAttachment6.jpg (http://s96.photobucket.com/albums/l176/whomeee/?action=view&current=GetAttachment6.jpg)

Oh, poor thing! I do hope they will be able to splint it, and as she is still a puppy, it will heal and grow still. She'll be in our prayers.

I hope it can be fixed. I couldnt imagine having the alternative.

Oh wow! That sounds just horrible. I too can't imagine going for the alternative.. there has to be something that can be done.

Get a second [or third] opinion!!

My RB Pepper was lame in her back leg when we adopted her.. one vet had told another prospective family that it needed to be amputated!! We went with our own vet's opinion, and believe it or not.. she lived 8 more happy years with it.

I hope she is okay. It's heartbreaking to see your dogs in pain. We send PT prayers!

Ouch...... poor Roxy. That's the thing with those tiny puppies/dogs, any sort of jumping, and something most likely will break.:(
It's probably a greenstick fracture (small cracks within the bone). This is the most common fracture in puppies. Hope she gets well soon.

I saw the x-rays both bones are broke in half so it will be a long road for her. The picture with Nola is where she jumped from about where Nola is standing is where Roxy jumped the other the white spot is where she landed. It was about a ten foot drop.

Oh no poor baby! Hugs to all of you and belly rubs for Roxy. Goodness, guess that is a reminder to all of us with small dogs to gate off big drops. I wouldn't have thought! Prayers for a complete recovery!

Poor Roxy! and you guys too! I know your heart must be so heavy with this. I agree that you should get a second opinion at LEAST! Don't do anything drastic. As Karen said, Roxy is still a puppy and growing bones mend faster than old ones!

What in the world made her jump that far?

Sending love,
Cathy

Poor little Roxy. I hope they can set the leg and it will heal. She does have her young age working in her favor too.

It's so easy for those little ones to break a leg. I've heard of them breaking a leg just by jumping off a bed. When my pom Myndi was younger, she was always racing around and jumping off things too, but fortunately she never broke anything. I just can't imagine one as small as Roxy jumping that distance.

Prayers coming from us that all will be well. Keep us posted please. Myndi (and Sparky) are sending big woofs and tails wags to your little one, and a kiss on her little head from me.

Poor puppy. My aunt has a chihuahua who broke his leg jumping off the bed as a puppy. He has a plate but they want it removed because his leg is so tiny there is nothing but a thin layer of skin over the plate. He gets sore from it sometimes and in the winter it literally freezes his leg if he's outside more than a minute. Definately consider something that can be removed once the leg heals as long as its a poissibility.

Yes - I agree with that.

I really never knew that was an option until I fractured my femur and had to have a rod and plates inserted. It bothers me constantly since I really have no meat on my bones to pad it, and my surgeon said that it can be removed once the fracture has completely healed. Don't know that I want to go back in to surgery for that tho.

So if they can do it for humans, I don't see why they wouldn't be able to do it for a dog.

Surgery went well the pin is in place and a cast is on they want to keep her again tonight to make sure there is no swelling. I can't wait till she comes home I miss the little stinker, she is all puppy wanting to play all the time or give kisses to wake you up :D. Even funnier still when she is barking at the bigger dogs trying to get a toy away from them even tho they had it first lol.

Good luck keeping her calm while she heals. Stock up on good chew toys, a kong to fill with peanut butter anything to keep her occupied! She may need to stay on leash for a while to be supervised closely enough to let that little bone heal! Miss Hoppy, who broke her leg when she was about 6 months old, went through 6 casts, and at the end, they say said it had healed crooked because she kept rebreaking it (try telling a rabbit "don't stand on that leg!") and they said she might hop with a limp, but she never did, thankfully!

So glad to hear that the surgery went well. I guess you'll have your hands full trying to keep her settled down a bit. Poms just don't know the meaning of that! ;)

Please keep her from high places!

And be sure to send some pics of that little cutie - please!!!!! :)

She got to come home today ya :D :D,. The Dr. said her bones are to small they didn't have a pin small enough for her leg so they just put it in a cast, we take her back in two weeks for a check up then two weeks after that we go back for an x-ray to see how things are going. The Dr doesn't think the specialest can plate her leg because Roxy is so small but if it comes to that I'll take her to the University of Iowa and see what they say, or to Colorado. Here is a picture of Roxy with her cast it almost seems like a chore for her to carry it around right now.
