Is there a full moon today? I've had a very topsy-turvy kind of day. People hurrying around, things that should be clear not making sense.

I heard on news radio today that in Illinois there is no restriction on the size of the campaign sign(s) you can put up in your yard, and no restriction on how long before or after an election you can have them on display. Does that mean I could have a five foot high "Shadrach Bond for Governor" sign? He was the first governor of the state of Illinois and was succeeded by Edward Coles in 1822. They tend to "grow" close to the berm as election day gets closer (the primary is March 18th).

I'm so mad at GM right now. I have a 2005 Saturn Ion which is subject to two different recalls - one for the ignition switch and one for power steering (with which I've already had a problem and had a repair made). GM's Web site asserts that the cars remain safe to drive, but I'm not entirely sure about that. I just went from 73,999 to 74,000 miles yesterday and I'm hoping to get at least another 18 months with this car. GM waited almost a year before they went public with this and I think they're still not being totally honest about it.

I'm still so mad about this whole thing ... with GM, with the government (Let's hold hearings!) and with the local service department from whom I can't get clear information. I heard on the radio that GM is in the process of implementing a system under which any employee can speak up without fear of retaliation if they perceive a problem such as the faulty ignition switches. Apparently somewhere within GM it was known that senior management was aware of the potentially defective ignition switches, but allowed the cars to be sold anyway instead of correcting the problem at that time. And that nothing was done even though it would have cost around $2 per vehicle to make the change to a not-potentially-defective ignition switch. You mean to tell me that in as large a company as GM - an automotive industry icon - there is not already a culture of "if you see something, say something"? People died because of a decision that was made about these ignition switches. When my current Saturn gives up the ghost, I am done with GM.

Got a second notice about the ignition recall. Heard on the radio that some GM vehicles from the same model years are subject to another recall addressing power steering. I called the dealer's service department to try and find out if I could have the work done for both recalls at the same time. THey have no information on the power steering recall. Right now they are primarily ordering the ignition parts for each individual recalled vehicle when the owners call to inquire about the work. I couldn't believe it when I heard that. If you know you're going to be making the same repair on a LOT of cars, would you not arrange to have multiple units of those parts on hand in advance, rather than ordering them individually?! It takes 10-14 days to get the parts from the point they place the order and they only place an order when they have sufficient volume. Then, when they receive your parts, they call to schedule your appointment. This just seems bass-ackwards to me. My car has 75,000 miles and I'm hoping for at least another 50,000 before it has to be replaced. I get the impression that GM is still scrambling to address this whole thing, rather than planning and then communicating an organized response.

Why do spammers suddenly feel the need to send out tons of "pedophile" alerts -as in, "are you dating a pedophile," or "are your kids safe" when I am not dating anyone, despite their numerous offers of singles of various nationalities, ages, genders, etc. and have no children to worry about?

Now that it has been 2 years since I had my own dirt, I just unsubscribed to the Michigan Bulb's email list. This is growing season, and it was getting a little too sad! But I have my purple basil seeds, thanks, Lady's Human, and will plant those as soon as I can pick up some "dirt cookies" to start them in! I have decided the landing in back of the apartment might get enough sun to grow something in a pot, and it is public space, so hopefully it will work out okay! The stairs are rarely if ever used, so should be undisturbed!

Hah! Thanks and I guess I won't be going anywhere, but, yeah, I have some other plans :p Well, more like my mom has plans for me ;) Housework. Hah! I really need to learn how to cook proper food, so, that's a goal I (or Mom :P ) plan(s) to achieve in these vacations. And yes, I plan to spend a huge amount of time with my new pups :D Yessh!! I'll try starting a thread about them once I snap a couple of photos. (They don't live with me, so, I can't do that whenever I want to... :( )

I hope to gobble up the motherload of books that I had planned to read :P and continue cross stitching and of course...decide what I want to do in the future...which may take up half of my summer break, since I have seriously no idea which field to choose, but I'm glad I've narrowed my choices down to five :P

But, I doubt I'll be going anywhere (like a vacation thing, yeah.) My brother's engagement party will probably be in this month, and then there will be all the preparations and all, and then my school's having summer classes thing, and I plan to attend them since my friends are planning to attend them as well :D

Now I feel like drinking lemonade, Karen :p Will try having fun, thanks ;)

It depends on what I choose to do now. I can either study two more years and then go to college, or go straight to college, by doing Fine Arts. It's quite different here since we don't have high schools or middle schools etc. If I do FSc (Faculty of Science) or A Levels (GCSE, since IGCSE isn't common here.) I'll have to study two more years, and then I can go to some university, too.
So, I'm pretty confused right now :o

Why you use the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch.......of course.

From The Book of Armaments 2:9-21

Brother: "And the Lord spake, saying, First shalt
thou take out the Holy Pin.

Then, shalt thou count to three, no more,
no less.

Three shalt be the number thou shalt
count, and the number of the counting
shalt be three.

Four shalt thou not count,
nor either count thou two, excepting that
thou then proceed to three.

Five is right out.

Once the number three,
being the third number, be reached, then
lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of
Antioch towards thy foe, who being
naughty in my sight, shall snuf it."

PT friends in the U.S., I received a phone call from this scam. It was just as this press release described it. I was stupid enough to call back to the toll-free number on my caller ID. It was a very scary phone call because of the information the caller claimed to have about me and the formality of the language she quoted. I was a little suspicious when she said she was from the "Internal Revenue Services" and also when she demanded immediate payment under threat of arrest. The village police were just here and told me they would have been notified in advance if a federal agent had a valid reason to arrest me. They referred me to the IRS Web site, which in turn referred me to the Inspector General's Web site. So please be careful if you get such a call. If you have both a land line and a cell phone, please use the other one to call the police while you keep the scammer on the line.

Thank you,
Elyse

http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/press/press_tigta-2014-03.htm

Edited to add, I don't always agree with all of the ways the government uses my tax money, but I think this Web site and information is a good one. The village police officers told me that another person was asked for way more money than I was, and did pay it to the scammer.

I was talking to a co-worker. I was about to go get some lunch from the cafeteria. Asked if she was going that way, we could walk together. She said no, she is fasting because it's Ramadan. I asked if I could bring her something to drink, which she declined. There are apparently a few more days left in the observance because she said she would be back to eating with our little group again next week.

Here are my questions- am I allowed to wish her a happy Ramadan? What kind of a holiday is it? Should I wish her an easy fast? She told me that her family eats a light meal after sunset. I'm not trying to be nosy or intrusive, just to get along better with someone who has a different faith tradition. Plus she has helped me on several occasions, for which I'm really grateful. Maybe I shouldn't even mention it further, just stick to conversation topics like the weather, fun summer activities, that sort of thing.

Thank you so much,
Elyse

Just because I can drink a gallon of ginger peach iced tea in a day, and have a plastic pitcher that holds almost a gallon at a time, that does not mean I should make a double batch at a time! The pitcher only fits on the bottom shelf in my fridge, and putting it in means I end up tipping the pitcher, and spilling tea!

And stopping an inch from the spout isn't enough, still made a mess.

Sigh.

My random thought for today was, I habitually will not put on my socks until I have to leave the apartment for some reason and will need to put shoes on my feet.

My reasoning is, if they aren;t on my feet, they won't get holes as fast ... as my feet apparently eat socks.

I was getting out of the car last night after a quick supermarket run ... and I saw a skunk on the lawn alongside my building ! I've never seen one "up close" before. This guy was maybe 10 or 15 feet from my parking space, just standing there and looking at me. At first I thought it might have been a cat or maybe a raccoon. Then he walked under the light from the window and I realized he was a skunk ... yikes! One of my neighbors puts out food for the squirrels and chipmunks, so I'm sure the skunk was enjoying the buffet!

Yesterday was the Chicago Marathon and there were over 40,000 runners! The men's and women's winners were both from Kenya. It was a really nice day weather-wise, sunny, a little windy with temperatures in the 50s F. The overall Chicago Marathon record time was missed by less than one minute. I read in the paper that there were participants who had run many marathons before including some of the world's most famous ones, and a lot of people running their first one ever whose goal was just to finish it.

The elementary school near where I work was open today (Veterans' Day). They had an assembly at the end of the school day, to mark the day. Parents and families were invited, too. When I was in grade school, we always got a day off on Veterans' Day. I think it makes more sense to have school and to have some sort of an observance. I wasn't a big fan of either Veterans' Day or Memorial Day until I did my graduate student rotations at the VA. Caring for veterans gave both holidays a new meaning.

Today was the alternative Christmas market at my church. Each year there is a petting area for the kids. This year there were sheep, goats, a snake (!), a skunk (scent gland-less). An adorable long-haired brown bunny named Mufasa :) and a chinchilla who was about as big as my two closed fists, thumbs together. I got to pet each of them just for a quick moment. The bunny was soooo sweet and the chinchilla was so incredibly soft! I think the bunny might have been a lion head and he sure had a ton of admirers at the Christmas market! Karen, I did ask one of their staff to consider nominating each of them for POTD. The chinchilla was sort of an ivory-cream color and such soft fur. :) So that was fun!

When did a different idea to approach a problem or a handy tip become a "hack"?

Hacks aren't positive things, they're irritating (to be kind...)

The way they're getting posted on line you'd think they were new and innovative, when most of them have been around for ages.

Karen

Yes, but "hack" has a negative connotation for many people. The "life hack", etc, has been forced on us by children running social media and journalists who are attempting to be hipsters.

PT Friends, does anyone (or do you know anyone) have experience using a therapy light for seasonal affective disorder? My doctor told me to look into it. Menards has one for $60. The full 10,000 lux lights cost around $200 and I don't have that kind of money right now. As I understand it, the combination of intensity and timing is what makes it work. As I'm typing this, it has been mostly cloudy all week, I am tired and drained. The doctor thought that if I can spend 15-20 minutes with it every morning to start, and work up to half an hour, that might help until the days start to get noticeably longer again.

Thank you so much,

I want to say that I am glad all the 'Christmas' commercials are done.

The music and marketing gets more ridiculous every year.

I REALLY didn't care for the car commercials that had kids asking how santa got the new car to them. I HATED the commercial in which the kid goes out to pick up the news paper and the parents open the garage door to reveal the new car.

As if the kid really cares?

He's still gonna be asked to be dropped off two blocks away from school, so why bother to impress him with a new car?

I just saw a job posting ... bilingual shipboard nurses needed for Princess Cruises. Trips are in Asia so you'd need to speak Chinese or Mandarin, which I don't. They usually hire nurses with emergency department or ICU experience. 4 months on, 2 months off. Cruise ship nurse used to be one of my dream jobs until I met someone who had done it - he told me it's a lot of work because they're responsible for the staff (both illnesses and injuries) as well as guests. Some of the largest cruise ships have a lot of staff members. They might be responsible for a couple thousand people between the guests and staff. One person with a cold or a case of stomach flu and it can spread really fast. So ... it's not exactly my dream job anymore.

I read this quote and it was mis-attributed to Nelson Mandela. It is actually by Marianne Williamson. No matter, I still really like it:

"...Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine, as children do.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

Big story in Chicago sports news today ... The Little League governing body has ruled that Chicago team, Jackie Robinson West, will lose its U.S. title because there were players that live outside the team's geographic area. The team's manager allegedly used a "fudged" map to recruit the best players with the cooperation of other local teams. The Little League administrator for the area may also have had some knowledge that this was going on. The title has been transferred to a team from Las Vegas.

This was a very big "feel-good" story. All of Chicagoland was rooting for this team. Their games were shown on an enormous screen down in Grant Park. There has been so much tragedy in Chicago lately with gangs and drugs, it was nice to have some good news to celebrate because of this team.

The reporter didn't explain how the Little League organization found out about this. I wonder why it took so long to come to light. I don't know a lot about kids' sports programs, though. Our local park district offers several sports- baseball, softball, basketball, soccer, lacrosse- and when you sign your child up, you provide documentation that shows whether you live within the park district boundaries or not. That happens before practices even start.

The 'problem' was that the new director for the league changed the boundaries of the area w/o telling the league. this allowed players from outside the area to play in that league.

People also try to work the system in High School athletics...People will falsify an address to get the kid into a school with a good track record in that sport....

A coach, who's team lost to the Chi team something like 34-3 (I may have that score wrong), noticed that AFTER the LLWS games, people from outside the area were having parties to honor the kids, when he did a little digging, he found out that the kids were living outside the area that the LL had set up for that region.

----------

I had to laugh at the call of 'racism' by jesse Jackson. I guess the rules only apply to everyone else? I feel for the kids, but after all is said and done? the blame should be laid at the feet of the guy that caused the problem?

Work with me on this one?

You are cooking and need to use a measuring cup - you need one cup of water.

HOW do you do it?

------

I pick up the cup in my left hand - I am right handed - I hold the cup under the faucet and work the handle with my right.......Got it so far?

With the measuring cup in my left hand, I raise it to read the markings and then realize that the markings are in milliliters.

------
In order to read the markings - the ones I am familiar with cup and fractions there of?

I have to spin the cup and my head around or change hands to get to see the cups measuring marks.

Ugh, that irks to poop out of me every time, BTW? It's a nice glass Pyrex cup......

Karen

For one cup, I just use the plastic half cup I keep handy for most thing, and fill it twice! Honest! When I need more than a cup, I use the Pyrex cup and set it on the counter, pour, either crouch or pick the cup up to eye level to check how close I am, set it back down and adjust accordingly!

There is a set of plastic nesting measuring cups on a string hanging off of a cupboard knob. Now, it would be easy to grab them, find the right cup and go from there? But THAT would be too easy!!!!

Work with me?

The cable box goes on a TV.

I check the box - it seems like it's gone bad, so I bypass the box and run the cable directly into the TV.

Now? I have to have the TV rescan the channels - That takes ten minutes each time.

After I run the scan, some channels disappear and dead channels are put back into mix.
I re run the scan and then the TV tells me that the cable has gone bad.
After running to the store and buying replacement cables, pulling and attaching the new cables?

I have to pull out the directions and re-run the scan another 5 times before I finally get most of the channels back.

---------------

A TV that is smart enough to know what connection port I am using, it too stupid to know what kind of signal my cable company is using - STD, HRC, IIRC.
HUH?

Why do I have to re-scan the channel lists?

Again, smart TV, stupid hoops to jump thru.

Why is the sheet of directions an origami project - 16 different pages on a giant sheet of paper that has NO numbers or way to show in which order to read the darn thing?

And why are the instructions written in typeface small enough to give me a headache?

And why are the instructions written in advanced tech jargon?

"Choose the type of cable signal your provider is using?"

I think they are using electrons, I may be wrong?

I spent 3.5 hours messing with the dang thing before I 'fixed' it.

Now? I just have to take the cable box back and re-install it.

Fun times ahead?

Out of the box, it was tightly rolled up in a plastic wrap. Before I even started cutting it open, I could hear a strange noise. It was air getting into the wrap, and the mattress already started expanding.
Once the plastic was off, it kept getting bigger like one of those tiny towels you have to soak in water. Within a few minutes, it had grown to full size.
Anyway, it's a wonderfully comfy mattress.

When I get a chance to go back to California I always stop at the little carts that sell fruit cups - The guy will chop it up while you watch and he tops it with a squeeze of lemon juice and a season salt called "Tajin".

For about 5 dollars you get a quart sized container with what is in season - usually watermelon, cantaloupe, mango, jicama, and pineapple.

Tajin is a lemon/salt/chili seasoning salt that goes really well with the tastes of the fruit.

It's amazing that CNN (the only US channel I can view here) find it SO important to interrupt the news with commercials every 5-10 minutes, especially when life threatening hurricanes/storms affect people so bad. I would have thought it's more important to inform people what goes on in the real world! I can't remember if they did the same when 9/11 happened.

In any case, commercial breaks should not be allowed more than twice per hour! I'm glad we have have some channels totally free of commercials. The only way you benefit from them, is that you have time to go make a cup of tea, or go to the bathroom.

Still praying for Texas and Louisiana. Also praying for Florida and for the people affected by the fires out west. There was a story on the local news about a group that went to Texas with supplies and brought dogs and cats from a shelter there back to PAWS Chicago, so the Texas shelter would have space for more animals who need care. (The animals they brought had already been in shelters, not displaced by the storms.) There were 4 separate vans bringing them back and they all arrived safely. I hope we don't have to seek shelter somewhere else, which would be especially difficult with the cats. We don't have a generator, but a couple of days without power would be manageable.
We could go to my boyfriend's brother's house (a 15 minute drive) or to his dad (a 30-minute drive). Of course, their proximity means that most likely they would be affected as well.

No idea, I never actually open the emails. And I am sure people who want their hair back already get plenty of emails to that effect!

I've had a cold for two and a half weeks. Went to the doctor and she gave me antibiotics for bronchitis and a sinus infection (yuck!), and they're working. Tonight is church choir, focus is on the music for Advent. I wish I felt a lot better.

There's a recall on romaine lettuce in the Chicago area. At first it was only bagged, pre-washed salad products; but now I think it is all romaine. I bought iceberg lettuce instead, for the time being.

Scary stuff - but are they saying if you have it, just wash the lettuce before using it?

I bought store-brand oyster crackers to take to work with soup. They're not as good as the name brand. *disappointed*

To be on the safe side, I'm not using any leaf lettuce. I make my salads with cucumbers, carrots, tomatoes, onions and mushrooms.

That sounds delicious! I'd leave out the mushrooms, which I don't like. I'd put some mozzarella cheese in for the protein. Yum! Thank you for the idea, I've been eating oatmeal for lunch at work and I'm getting tired of the same thing every day.

thoughts about what to interest yourself on vacation days.

Let's see -

Go for a walk and bring a bag with you - and see how many pieces of trash you can find and pick up along the way

Go to the library and ask a librarian for what her or his favorite book to read would be

Write one letter a day to a friend or relative, or older person who might be lonely

Think of a new skill you'd like to acquire - make a list of them, Then pick one and start researching on how to accomplish it!

I have a random thought. Why has Lily crawled up in the made bed under a down quilt and fallen asleep on such a hot freakin' day for 2 hrs. She's wearing a fur coat. Couldn't find her until a discovered the lump. Gonna go see if there's still breath on the mirror. I've heard they are cool in the summmer and warm in the winter. Down quilts I mean 🤷🏾‍♀️

New random thought. I am wondering why Lily's new favorite place to sleep is on the kitchen island on top of the bamboo cutting board?? Mia doesn't seem to think it's too weird. She's just looking at her from the floor, like la Dee daaaa, looks like a great spot, at least she's not slapping me around. Maybe it's just me....
Ha ha, course it is. Why I try to make sense out of anything cats do is beyond me, yet... I never seem to quit. 😻 Xox

I saw on the news that Koko, the gorilla who communicated with sign language, passed away. I saw a cute clip of her signing to Robin Williams, telling him to tickle her. RIP Koko.

Soooo... Lily chased a flying bug right into the French doors and smashed her head. Still the kitten at heart, she does not appear to be concussed, thank God, she was going full torque. We have screens but she merely slaps them open or hangs on them until they are.... shredded and replaced (sigh) I wonder if eating bugs are harmful for her. I just googled all about Koko, I wonder if they will have a funeral for her, definately a memorial plaque at least. Her caretakers must be heartbroken. The most magnificent and beautiful gorilla. I read she passed in her sleep of old age. Hope she knew how much she was loved, she was a smart one so we know she did. ❤️ I love random thoughts and Pet Talk so much. Thanks Karen, you are wonderful.

Aww, you are so welcome.

And it probably depends on the bug, but most are just a little extra crunchy protein for kitties!

She also loved kittens. How precious is that!
