Towards the end of November I noticed that Logan was drinking more and ravenously hungry. When I have my morning coffee, she eats at least 10 "cookies" after doing her business. She will bark and talk and scream until I give her one after another, to the point I take my coffee upstairs and shut the bedroom door. She was eating her dinner fine, but drank so much all the time that she was waking me 3x at night. A first since I've had her for 6 years. No peeing in the house, though.
The vet fit me in on Monday afternoon, Dec 7. She took a urine sample and blood work.
She called me Friday (yesterday), and found nothing. Her urine is fine, as is the blood work, having tested for diabetes and various other ailments.
She said to keep tabs on the amount of water she drinks. As of 8a, I filled up her bowl to 9 cups. It's now 1/2 full. The vet said a dog her age, weight, etc should drink 12 cups a day and if she drinks more, to call her on Monday.
Logan eats no people food. She has a rawhide bone at night, and 1/4 cup of Special K cereal as a nighttime treat. That's it.
Today, Saturday, she's not eaten her dinner. It is 643p., I fed her at 6p. I sat by the bowl and she plopped herself down at the other end of the room, head between paws, and stared at me. I'm dying here. This is a first. She did her #2 around 6p, and peed, chased a rabbit, wagged her tail, chased my shoe, "talked to me".
She doesn't have Lymes..I ordered a test. For the money I spent, I think the vet should have a better idea. I gave her all the info I had. I know my dog to every piece of her hair. Every movement, sound and bark. I think i was extremely thorough.
She's a vet I never had. It doesn't mean she's not good. Logan loved her, no muzzle needed. She also happens, by coincidence to the the long lost cousin of my best friend (same last name). She's young, but with all her education, I expect her to have a clue. Dogs can't talk, that's why I do. She asked me tons of questions on the phone on Friday and as I was answering, she had to go. I was pissed off. I hate to report her to my fave vet, the owner, but I want an answer.
I googled pituatary and endrocinde gland, thinking Logans was masking symptoms. Nothing.
I know you all are more aware of things than I, with multiple dogs and more experience.
Can someone give me an idea, advise, a past experience? This was so sudden I'm beyond myself. Always bragging how healthy Logan is. This is consumming me. I don't even care about my blind eye. I want my dog to feel good. I want more years with this sweet girl.

Can you ask your vet to consult with another more senior vet? Or is there a vet school nearby to which you could take Miss Logan to for a second opinion? I do think you need another, experienced set of eyes on the issue now.
I think of how much Dr. Joerg Meyer at Tufts helped Miss Hoppy, when her own vets found trouble, and didn't have good options to offer.

Logan's more important to you than you upsetting a vet. I have reported a vet and a vet assitant to the vet/owner. Demand an answer. Do know, there are times that things are difficult to diagnose, been there before. At least talk to the head vet about your concerns.
I hope it's not too serious, what ever's going on with her. I will keep Logan in my prayers.

We hope you get to the bottom of Logan's problem soon. It can be so exasperating, not being able to find out what's wrong and get started on a treatment.
Is Logan limping at all, or seen lame? I know you said she doesn't have Lymes, but don't totally rule it out yet. I had health issues with Sparky, and after a month of educated guesses , he was found to have Lymes in spite of the fact that he receives the vaccine annually, and he also tested negative for it. After a month on antibiotics, he was back to himself.
Hoping Logan is soon back to her old self real soon.

I think you should seek the opinion of the older, more experienced vet. This could be a serious matter.
Quite a few years ago I took my RB Sami dog to the vet as 3 of her feet were all raw and red and she was licking them. Had to see a young substitute vet as our regular vet was on holidays. Anyways he told me she had foot cancer!! In 3 feet!!! I went back to my regular vet when he returned and it turns out she had allergies and when we changed her food her skin irritation went away.
Please seen a second opinion from someone more experienced for Logan.

Did the blood work include testing for overactive thyroid? Which test(s) did they do for that?
I have this issue with my vet and my cats. They only test blood work for . . . TSH. With my cats, that is normal. When I insist they do Free T4 and T3, THEN it shows up that the thyroid is not working properly. In the case of cats, over active is most common. I don't know for dogs. I have learned that with many other vets, wehn you take your cat in for suspected thyroid issues, they DO those other tests automatically. Grrrr.
How is her weight? Is she losing, gaining or holding steady? That should also be factored in to the mix.
Do seek further input from the vet you saw, or another vet in the practice.

So this indicates her water intake is normal, right?

You mentioned Logan was drinking more than usual and was eating ravenously. You didn't mention if he was losing weight? If you increase his food and he's still ravenous AND seems to be losing weight I would look into EPI or malabsortion syndrome. Could be his pancreas isn't producing the necessary enzymes to digest his food which would cause him to feel starved and lose weight .

I would be gentle though, when telling on this vet. It's not her fault that she can't find out what is wrong. It isn't like they know every disease in their head. But I do second a second opinion. Does Logan have runny poops? I noticed the past couple days Delta had bad runny poos, (they've gone away now) and her water intake increased a lot. The freaking out without food and then not eating it is very confusing though.

I have no advice for you because I am not a vet but I would suggest that you talk to the more senior vet and ask for a second opinion. Do you think she got into something outside that could have upset her tummy and made her more thirsty?

Karen, does Logan act sickly? Maybe she's just holding back eating
because she prefers "cookies". I'd go with your intuition and get a 2nd
opinion if you think it would help.

Karen, I'm sorry that I don't have any advice to offer as to what is causing Logan to be that way.
You know your girl better than anyone so, yes, don't hesitate, go for another opinion especially when it would be from someone you know and trust.
Prayers and good thoughts on the way that all will be well.

Thanks, everyone. Sorry I haven't updated (freaking out-another eye surgery on Dec 16).
Ms Logan seems better. I kept tabs of her water intake and it was about 12-13 cups a day. For the last 2 days, she seems more normal. She's still fiesty, eats well. I cut out the morning breakfast of too many treats. She gets 1. She hasn't woke me up in the middle of the night for 2 nights, nor has she guzzled water as much. Whew!
If she had continued to worry me, I would have definitely called the owner or the other 2 vets I use constantly. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Yes, Sandie, a dog her age, weight, should drink no more than 12 cups a day.
I love these PT prayers!:love::love:

I'm so glad to hear that she's acting much more normal now.:) I hope that she'll continue to do well. Now you need to focus on your own health and get better.

Glad to hear she is doing better. That is one less thing for you to worry about.
Perhaps, maybe, all those extra treats were the culprit, who knows. As long as she is settling in to her normal self, that is what matters.
Best wishes for your eye surgery today!

A person wonders if the treats maybe didn't have a bunch of salt in them to make your dog thirsty? I am so glad to read things are better. Best wishes on your surgery & good thougts & prayers sent your way too.

Carole,
I'm so sorry about your Logan. He's a beautiful dog. When I had to make the ultimate decision with Mollie Rose, I begged the vet to help her live. Unfortunately, she was in the advanced stages of kidney disease. I do hope Logan gets better. I'm going to light a candle for him and also he will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I cut out the morning breakfast of too many treats.
She gets 1.
Take a look at the LABEL on the treat package ...
Read what's actually IN them.
And take the package with you for Show & Tell at the Vet -
ask him/her what they think of the contents.
There are a LOT of "special purpose" treats made with great attention put
to what's IN them and that they "do no harm" to the pet and
may even be a proper source of nourishment.
Prayers that YOU start to feel better!!
{{{Hugs}}}
I'm glad Logan is acting normal and continues to do so.
You know your dog better than anyone.
Sometimes illness just don't shop up on basic tests.
Fingers crossed that Logan continues to act herself.

Took Logan back to the vet on Thursday, because she developed huge, unsightly pimples on the outside of her nostrils.
I always wipe her face after she digs in the yard, but i guess I didn't do a great job because it was a bacterial infection. Antibiotics and cream. Looking better.
However, she's still drinking like a fish and peeing it out. She gained another pound. It has to be water because I cut her food down by 1/4 cup and she seems satisfied.
I stopped her water at midnight on Friday and took a fresh sample 1st thing this morning. She never woke me up. Vet closed at noon and I was stuck in the storm with John and a dead battery (thanks sweetie for forgetting to shut off my lights) so I have to redo her sample Monday night.
Of course I don't want anything serious, but I want a solution. Logan is so stoic, no complaints or whines. Still loveable and happy and sweet. My poor shedding pumpkin.
