I came home after a miserable day of trapping (caught nothing except a bad attitude). When I got home, Maya Linn was staggering around as if her back legs weren't working. I watched her briefly and she couldn't even get up on the couch.

I ran her up to the vet. Dr. Berard examined her and watch her walk around the examining room. I told him I thought it was neurological. He said I was right. She had absolutely no response to the eye exam and her ears were clear, to rule out an inner ear infection which would cause her imbalance. He said that with a brain disease, it can come on very quickly. I asked him if she might be having a stroke or an aneurysm. It's possible but we won't know unless we do a CT scan or MRI, which can cost hundreds of dollars that I just don't have. It's breaking my heart.

Now here's my dilemma. They are keeping her overnight, doing blood work and hydrating her (the little heffer gained a half pound since the last time she was there a couple of weeks ago for a URI. Remember that fiasco where their vet tech used my cat carrier WITH Maya Linn in it to break up a dog fight???

Now I'm thinking that her being banged around the carrier with great force could've caused this brain injury. Believe me, I'm going to bring it up when I speak with them tomorrow. I have the exact date it occurred and they cannot tell me it didn't happen.

The vet didn't seem too optimistic but said to wait till tomorrow and see if she's any better.

The thought of losing another one of my cats (she was Mollie Rose's snuggle buddy) has me in tears.

So if you guys can say a prayer and possibly light a candle for Maya, I would so greatly appreciated.

I called Dr. Berard just now to remind him of the dog incident and asked him if Maya being banged around the carrier would cause these symptoms and he said no. If there were any brain swelling because of the incident, I would've seen them much earlier.

He said he has seen cats with bacterial infections, neurological problems that correct themselves within a couple of days. It's a waiting game.

I know I'm not gonna get much sleep tonight. Anyone want to play scrabble on facebook????

Maya Linn is 10 years old.

Prayers for Maya Linn! Praying that whatever is affecting her will 'work itself out'.

How much would an x-ray or MRI be? I'm sure a few of us could pull some $ together!

hugs!

Maya Linn is 10 years old.

When my head injury and subsequent blood clot on the brain occurred, the neurological symptoms didn't show up for an entire month and the exact same thing happened as w/Maya Lynn and that's that my legs buckled out from under me.

On the other hand, remember when my Coco Puff had the incident that the first vet thought was CH? It went away and hasn't occurred since.

We'll say prayers for your Maya Lynn, Donna. This must be so scary for you.

I just got off the phone with Dr. Berard. He told me that she seems better since giving her the antibiotics, although she's been walking in circles with her head tilted. He's keeping her another night until the blood results come back. I asked him how much a CT scan would cost and he said $1,000. THAT I don't have. He told me that as long as she's responding to the meds, there's no need to do one at this point.

I'm relieved that my baby is getting the best treatment possible. What's another couple hundred dollars I don't have? As long as she comes back home to me.

Walking in circles definitely sounds neurological. That's what my Creamsicle did at first; it's all she could do and she still does it when she gets excited. Hopefully, Maya Linn will continue to improve. :)

Prayers for both you, and Maya Linn. Hoping that it isn't as serious as it sounds.

I'm sure that your vet has checked this, but how is her blood sugar? I had a Lhasa with diabetes, and when her blood sugar dropped, she would walk in circles. Maya Linn's case does sound more neurological tho.

Smokey,

The vet said he's waiting for the blood test results to come back. Maybe there will be something there that will tell us more. I just want my baby back home with me.

I'm so sorry to hear about Maya Linn...prayers for her wellness.

I think the people who've mentioned blood sugar have a good point; I'm sure that's in the tests, though. Let us know!

Just talked with the vet again. He said her blood surgar was 271 and attributes it to the stress of what was going on yesterday. He's going to test her sugar again. If it hasn't gone down, she may have be to be on insulin. We'll cross that road when we get to it. At least I have some answers.

Hi Maya Linn,
I felt sad when Meowmie said you have to stay at the whitecoat's because you feel icky. Just remember that the whitecoat is your friend and wants to help you get better. So be sure to take your medicine and let him help you. I know how much you miss your Meowmie and fursibs, they miss you too. I'm sending you lots of get better soon purrs and headbumpies. Meowmie is saying lots of prayers for you. Get better soon!

Your friend,
Groucho

I was there at 9 am to pick up my baby. I spoke with Dr. Berard and he said that Maya Linn is doing MUCH better. Her sugar levels are within normal limits. We still do not know what caused it. We probably never will. He's got her on Clavamox liquid with Cortisone. She's not in any pain whatsoever.

I'm now $949 in debt to the vet, but my baby is home!!! The first thing she did was wolf down a whole can of cat food. Then I gave her some fresh turkey. She's walking around the house meowing and it looks to me like she's afraid to jump up on her favorite chair because of what happened the other day (tried to jump on the couch and her hind legs buckled underneath her). She keeps going over to the water fountain and meowing, like she scared of drinking. I wish I understood "cat". I put some water in a syringe and gently squirted it into her mouth. She's now laying in the middle of the living room floor trying to sleep, but meowing at the same time. I'm still very worried.:(:( She's not acting her normal self. If I only knew what she was trying to tell me. It's very frustrating.

I don't want to leave her to go to work tonight. But I guess I have to if I want to pay off that vet bill.

*sigh* of relief that she's home.

Yes, she probably feels insecure, Donna. When Coco Puff had that temporary spell and hearing loss, he laid down in the middle of the foyer, legs outstretched w/nothing around him as though he wanted to be able to see in every direction and bolt if he needed to. She'll come around. I'm glad Maya Linn is back home w/you. That's the best place for her now. :)

I just got off the phone with the vet. He sounds concerned as much as I do. He asked me if I wanted to bring her back for more observation and I told him that I'd rather she stay here so I can watch her. I've got a bad feeling about this and my gut instincts are usually right.

Right now she's laying on the couch next to her snuggle buddy, sound asleep "meowing". I'm afraid that once she's off the meds, it'll only be a matter of time.

:(

Prayers that she surprises everyone and rebounds.

That "meowing"...prayers it is FROM the meds for some reason, and she will improve as they wear off.:love::love:

Give her some gentle pats for me.

Catty1,

She slept by my side all night. She's doing much better. After looking at the vet records, and noticing that she had 3 different injections the day I picked her up, I attribute her actions to that.

I gave her her first dose of meds and she took it well. I'm glad I'll be home all week to keep an eye on her.

While working last night, I thought of calling the vet who owns the hospital and talking to him one on one, about the "incident" with the dogs a month ago and the possible "connection" with my cat's equilibrium problem. I wanted to ask him if he'd be willing to foot the bill for the MRI or CT scan to get to the bottom of her imbalance. But a very wise woman whom I adore, told me that I'd be cutting off my nose to spite my face. Not many vets allow you to make payments on bills (especially one like mine).

My biggest fear is that once the medicine is done, she'll go back to having equilibrium problems.

I also thought that maybe, just maybe, she has an inner ear infection from the URI she had back in September, causing her imbalance. Back then the vet did say she had alot of excess ear wax.

So I've decided that once the medicine is gone, I'm going to call and ask if I can keep her on the meds for one more month, just to be sure.

So, that's it, kiddos. I thank you so much for all your prayers and candles. I love you all very much!!

I can now breath a sigh of relief. *sigh*
