View Full Version : Fister is on the edge again

As many of you know, Fister tends to get bladder problems frequently. The last few days, he's been licking his behind quite a lot and today, he's had difficulties peeing - and dripping next to the box. :( Some of us knows what that means! I'm not panicking yet, but I got some "Romefen" tablets for him at the vets (antibiotic and painkilling) and have given him 5 mg yesterday and 5 today. Will speak to the vet tomorrow about whether to continue or bring him over for an Xray.
One thing I've been thinking about is whether it would be a good idea to boil the water he drinks, as our tapwater seem to contain a lot of calcium - I have to put his glass in vinegar once a week to get it off.
Niina, was it Romefen you gave Casper recently? I'm afraid to give him another half now before bedtime, as the dosis should be 1 mg pr. kg a day.
Well, please keep your fingers and paws crossed for him! :)

Randi, I surely hope Fister gets better soon and doesn't have to have that nasty operation!
Have you ever considered the RAW meat diet? You may want to look around on the internet. From what I have read, kidney and bladder problems often clear up when you switch them from dry/canned food to RAW MEAT. I would certainly look into it.
Keep us posted on dear Fister boy. We all love him SO!

Poor Fister! :(
Does he take any meds everyday that help acidify his urine? I know that my friend who has these problems with her Shi Tsu is doing this and has been well for a while now. Maybe you ask your vet about that? I think Boots is as well?
I would definitely boil his water or even give him bottled "Drinking Water" (has most minerals taken out of it). Is bottled water very expensive there?
Please send him my love, I’ll keep him in my prayers.

Sorry to hear about Fister's problems... Keeping fingers and paws crossed here for him.
No, we didn't give Romefen for Casper, we gave Clamoxyl (it's antibiotics).

Sas! I'll do anything to avoid that nasty operation! I have not heard about the raw meat solution. That would be HEAVEN for him! :p It's actually the only time he just can't keep himself on the floor in the kitchen! Have to keep an eye on him until the meat is on the pan!
He's been getting Hills S/D for about 6 months now and I've just bought the C/D (vets recommendation), but he's only had it once so far.
Sara! I saw your thread and was thinking if that would be good for him - I'm sure he's love it! will have to check the contents of Magnesiun, Calcium and Phosfor.
Oh, if he could have all the above, he'd think it was X-mas everyday!! :D
NoahsMommy! I thought of another solution for the drinking water just now. It may be a good idea to give the water you put down your iron (demineralised I think)
Niina! Oh yes, Fister also got these one time. Thanks for posting, I know your duvet is calling for you too. ;)
I'll aks my vet all these questions tomorrow!
Thanks for your concern all of you! :)

I was up real early this morning! Only to find out that Fister had been dripping some more outside his sandybox and also a little on the kitchen floor. He had made some poo in the box and some outside.
I was the first on the line to our vet and we're taking over in one hour. When I put the phone down he puked on the floor next to his sandy box :( Poor little guy! He's definately not feeling up to a trip to the vet! He's retired to under the wardrobe now, where he usually has his morning nap. Hopefully we can get him out and into the carrier!
He was out 3-4 hours the other evening, perhaps he found a few "treats" - we saw him go over to the park, wonder if he found something there.
Will post an update later today! Please keep all fingers and paws crossed! :)

the c/d should do the trick. I had at least 4 cats with various stages of urinary problems until I started feeding the c/d to all. It has now been YEARS problem free........
Just as an extra added precaution, the cats get bottled water.

Fister did really well at the vet! No hissing, no complaints! :D
When we arrived he got a shot and dozed off. Then he was put on the scales - here's the result:
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid34/p1eb7b1483b913107d958f3966978f730/fd3085f7.jpg
7.7 kg!
At the vet, he had a cahteter put in again and was flushed through, there were lots of tiny crystals. Amazing how little can cause a blockage! He then had an X-ray which didn't show any big stones in his bladder. :)
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid34/p1732f3ab9e51fe28f39e93153f4b3838/fd3085f3.jpg
This is his bladder
A urine sample was also taken, but the result is not ready untill tomorrow. It will show whether he has an infection or not.
The big question is what is causing this  He has had Hills diet S/D for about 6 months now, but still he blocks up. :(
The vet said, that if he continues like this, the only real solution will be to operate: This means that he'll have to go through the same ordeal as Boots the Kat! :(
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid34/pbc13c8ad1f4c06f8f88db5b10a711de4/fd3085f6.jpg
Can I go home now, please!!
We came to get him 5-6 hours later and when we got home he was put on our bed with blankets all around him. As we had suspected, he wanted to go down on the floor - and down he went! Soft landing! :)
He has just now managed to crawl to the other side of the bed (underneath) and we expect him to be heading for the kitchen within the next few hours. Tonight, I bet he'll fresh enough to race around - or at least jump up on our bed. But he will be most welcome!! :D

You certainly didn't look the happiest to be there, but it's to help you feel better!
That's awful about the crystals building back up so quickly. I know it's miserable for their poor little kitty bodies. I wonder why he has so much trouble. Are some cats bodies just more prone to building up crystals than others?
Lots of scritchies from me and purrs from my boys are on the way.

I think I may have spoken too soon - about Fister getting back to normal. All right, he was trying to crawl around last night and managed to get into his new bed - Will power! At 2.15 AM he even managed to jump up on my pillow and lay there for a while, then over to John, but he was asleep! He gave up and crawled back under the bed. Then at 4 AM he gave it another try, this time he woke John up and stayed with him the rest of the night under his eiderdown. No more sleep for him!
I was afraid that he would try and get up in the windowsill, so I'd piled lots of towels up in case he should fall down. When I got up, he was sitting on the the pile of towels in the kitchen, looking very miserable. :( He hadn't eaten or drunk anything. I filled a syringe with water and squirted it into him and also stuffed a painkiller down, before going to the dentist.
John got up and carried him into the bed and had a cuddle and then called the vet and explained the situation, he could only say: Don't worry, he'll come round later!
I'm back and he's still looking sad and miserable, so I've given him some more water. Now and again, he goes (yes, he can walk a little) and has a look at his food, but hasn't eaten anything yet!

The battle scarred veteran
The results have come and it appears that he has no bacteria in his bladder. This is not good! So if he blocks up again, the only real solution would be to have the operation. :(
Before it gets to that stage, we'll try and find a way to balance his PH (7 now, a bit high) and hopefully avoid it. So research is all we can do and keep his surroundings comfy and free of any stress.
Thanks everybody for all your support - it warmed!! :)

Fister is bleeding now and we are very worried. He's hiding under the wardrobe in our bedroom, he's hardly had anything to drink the last 2 days. We called the emergency vets (hospital), they seem to think there's no immediate danger and wouldn't operate until tomorrow, but we're taking him to the hospital tomorrow anyway to have him operated. :( It's the third time he blocked up and had a cahteter and it hasn't helped.
Please keep everything crossed for him!

Randi ~
We've been through some of this...
Bleeding from WHERE??
Blood mixed in with the urine??? Or from somewhere else?
Blood in the urine - may look nasty and red - isn't a red-flag emergency as long as it's pretty wattery and not THICK as if it were pure blood.
Does he Still have the Catheter Installed; or did they take it out after he was flushed??
IF Fister hasn't been drinkin by himself for 2 days - He NEEDS to be force-fed some water.
Best tool to force water is a syringe - with the sharp needle part REMOVED.
No syringe? A kid's squirt gun or something similar will work...
Hold him with your hand over his head - thumb on one side of his jaw and fingers on the other side of his jaw -
gently apply pressure to the hinge of his jaw - he'll open up...
Squirt about a TEAspoon of water WAY back on his tongue - he'll swallow most of it and shake the excess out (all over you!)
He should be OK as long as he's not Completely Blocked and cannot eliminate any urine.
How many hours will it be before you can get him in to see the Vet?

It’s 7.30 PM here, and Fister has finally appeared from under the bed, where he’s been for nearly 48 hours - apart from a few short trips around the flat. He’s been in his box last night and done a pee and poop, with no blood in it - thank goodness!
He has obviously had a really bad experience this time, so bad that he will have nothing to do with us. Especially with John, who hasn’t been able to get near him. This is most unusual and very worrying, as John is always the one he crawls around on while watching TV in the evening.
When John tried to catch him to take him to the vets, he howled very loudly (MOST unusual), and tried to hide himself in his litter box!
We will take him to the hospital on Wednesday and finally find out whether we are going to have him operated or not. We have now spent nearly $1000 on him, and it has only resulted in trauma and torment for Fister. Looks like we have a cat like Boots, who just can’t be cured with special foods. He’s now out and sitting in the bathroom, but is not very sociable, and still doesn’t seem to like John. It’s so frustrating - if only he could talk to us!
It’s nice to hear from Edwina that other cats take time getting over there sedation slowly, but it was very worrying for us since Fister has always been quick to come to us before, this time he seemed to reject us.
Newest development: He’s eating at the moment and has drunk half a glass of water during the night!! :D
Thanks a million everyone for all your support and prayers! And thanks Phred for your post last night, it helped us sleep better!

What good news that Fister is eating, drinking and eliminating!
When I was a very young woman I was in the hospital. An older woman was brought into the next bed and catheterized. She tried to be so strong and only whimper. It is an indelible memory.
Fister has to be hurting from his medical treatment and like all of us...he is taking it out on those he loves most!
I'm sure it will pass!

Maybe I missed this, but Does Fister Still HAVE the catheter IN him, or did the Vet 'flush' him and then Remove the catheter??
If the catheter is still installed, then Fister won't have any control over when he 'pees' - the catheter drains any urine that appears in his bladder... He'll dribble almost constantly.
If they removed the catheter after the blockage was removed and they flushed him...
Without the catheter he COULD block up again and not be able to eliminate his urine when he feels the need (bladder full). Without the catheter - he needs to be monitored closely to be certain that he's both Drinking AND Eliminating urine. If he plugs up without the catheter to drain his bladder - when the bladder becomes full, the kidneys will stop producing urine (no where for it to go) and the toxins will build up in the kidneys = Red Flag urgent medical emergency.
Boots had a catheter twice (and came home for three or four days with it IN) - No problem producing & eliminating urine while it was IN - but he started plugging up a few days after it was removed. Luckily I caught him straining to urinate each time he plugged - and rushed him back to the Vet to be re-cathetered. Twice was enough - the Vet said he was probably going to plug up again - and we scheduled the operation immediately.
Summary: If he doesn't Have the catheter IN now - YOU guys need to be monitoring him very closely...
He could plug up while you're waiting for his hospital appointment.

Thanks Phred, I know that there's a risk he'll block up again. This is the third time he had a catheter put up and been flushed - twice at our own vet and once in the hospital. The shortest period of time it took him to block up again has been 2 months. However he has been showing signs that he would in between, but went back to peeing anyway, after I gave him half a "Romefen" (painkiller)
He had the cahteter put in and removed after a few hours each time. He was not bleeding the other two times, so we nearly panicked last night. We called the emergency vets at the hospital, but they said there was no immediate danger. This morning I rang both vet hospitals in CPH. and also our own vet. They all said not to worry for his life. However, we've booked him at this coming wednesday at 9.40 for the operation. We can't go on like this any longer! If he don't have the operation it's a matter of time when he will block up again.
There's also some good news! :D He has eaten, peed and pooped like normal and during the night he was drinking half a glass of water (almost as usual) At the moment, he's lying on John's stomack in bed purring away and looking like he's in heaven!! He has even been up in the windowsill! When I was cooking dinner (no, not clams!) he came out in the kitchen - and would you believe it, he looked very intensely at the door leading down to the yard! NO WAY mister Fister!!
We would like to thank you all again for this wonderful support - it has been truly heartwarming! :)
How is Boots doing??? We hope he's feeling great!!!

I know I'm real late to this thread, but I'm soooo glad Mr. Fister is doing better now. Sounds like he really had a rough time of it this time, and it does sound like it's only a matter of time before he needs the surgery, so might as well get it over with. It was so hard to see that picture of him under the wardrobe/bed (?) when he wasn't looking happy. He just doesn't look like the same Fister we saw a few weeks ago daring someone to put a leash on him to let him outside (when he was flexing his claws). Poor Fister. :(
I won't be able to post all next week, but I just wanted to let you know that we'll be thinking of him during and after his surgery. He's such a favorite here on PT that it would be devastating to lose him, so we'll be adding our thoughts and prayers to everyone else's so he makes it through in one piece....errr..well...maybe with a few small pieces missing. ;) :)
Please give him some extra scritchies from me, and head bumpies and nose kisses from Tubby and Peanut. And <hugs> for you and John too. It's just so hard on us when our furbabies aren't feeling well. :)

Thanks all - you're just great! :) We've had to postpone the operation, because I've had a nasty cold (feeling a bit better today) - but now John has got it. :( We're not going anywhere today!
Fister is now back to normal, he is peeing, pooping, eating and drinking. :) So no harm done in waiting a bit! We know it's a matter of time before he blocks up again, so we WILL make another appointment. He's been laying between us most of the nights, he's so sweet - and such a good earwarmer. We may go on a vacation soon. We will then put Fister in a catpension connected with a vethospital. We can arrange to have him operated about 3 days before we're back and he'll be in safe hands while we're gone. I'll let you know what happens!

A reprieve for Fister, but it sounds like Mom and Dad are feeling pretty lousy. I'm glad he's doing so well right now, though, Randi. Hope you and John will be feeling "peachy" soon.
