Does anyone else have the problem of litter box overkill? # of my cats not only cover thier waste but end up digging and digging until the litter is out of the box and the other cats will then use that litter for thier business. And 2 of the older males sometimes show dominance by leaving thier droppings un covered.Moose The Magnificent is especially good at this, and at 25 lbs you notice verrry quickly.I use old UPS delivery boxes and covered pans, but I still come home to sand dunes in the living room, any ideas would be welcome.

Do you have at least 1 litter box per cat? That helps sometimes, cats don't like to share. I also use covered litter boxes they around around $12 or $15 for the jumbo sized pans. It seems to help keep the litter in the box.

Yes, I was going to suggest the covered boxes. and also possibly more boxes. It is possible that they throw it on the floor ONLY when they have trouble finding a clean spot. Can't say for sure, but it is a possibility. They do make liter boxes with the entrance on the top, but I am not sure Moose could quite make it into those. You may want to place the boxes inside yet another, say cardboard, box so it catches the litter.

Try using a small sandbox, that might have higher sides. I use the really large litter pans. I used to use the covered pans, but some of my fluffier cats don't seem comfortable in them, they can't turn around well enough.
My girl Allie digs and digs and digs, and it is just for fun. So, I don't always think it is for some strange reason. I also keep a piece of carpet under the boxes. So, any extra litter just gets cleaned up, and I don't stress as much...

Another thing to consider is how much litter you have in there. All my cats love to dig like crazy and if I put too much in it's everywhere! :D

Mini is very careful not to spill out of the box, but Jasmine, well we call her The Excavator. She has a great old time kicking the litter all around the laundry.
We clean the litter box twice a day so it's never dirty. When we move we'll get her a covered litter box and try that. If that fails, we'll try a different type of litter.

MooShoo doesn't cover his poo at all, but just scrapes the inside of the covered boxes (I have 5 boxes for 6 cats), which can be very annoying at 3 a.m.
Mollie Rose, being the lady that she is, digs to China before she goes and again afterwards. Then keeps on by scratching the edge of the box making a "thumping" noise (also annoying at 3 a.m.).

I know that Marigold is VERY picky about the kind of litter we use. If we change litter for any reason, she just won't use the box. *Grrr* At the beginning we had one type that she "tolerated" and would dig & dig...we changed to a clumpable kind, and that was the end of the digging.

The litter containers I currently use are $3 plastic tubs with about 2" to 3" of material in them. All of my furkids use them, except three of them. These are plastic laundry tubs I believe. I have use open trays, but the tubs keep them from slinging litter all over the premises. And besides, the cats seem to like the tubs better anyway, because ( I suppose) it give them a sense of privacy. When they use the, all you can see at their level is their heads.

Thank you for your ideas.I have nine litter boxes for 11 cats ,two of them plastic storage boxes, shallow but long and wide.Six of the boxes are covered, and the others are old UPS container plastic containers.I have bought plastic sheets from my former employer and this keeps things a little cleaner. Thanks Again!
