I never had much regard for bariatric surgery until I heard this broadcast. It's from the radio program "White Coat, Black Art" with host Dr. Brian Goldman.

I heard the show yesterday, and suddenly it made sense for doctors to address the PHYSICAL side of the illness by either temporary (gastric band) or long term (removal of up to 85% of the stomach). Patients here talk about the prejudice and insults that come from members of the medical profession.

No, this is NOT usually paid for by the Canadian health system, unless you get the permanent, not reversible, kind of surgery.
