Getting older is not for the faint-hearted. That seems to be true for cats as well.
We noticed last week that Tigris has put on an extra two lb. It worried me already as he had been 13 lb all his grown-up life and it never changed. The first thing is we cannot understand we didn't see it earlier as he looks as if he's pregnant.
We thought he had profited from us always trying to make sure that Filou eats. He really loves Filou's renal kibbles. So we tried to only give him wet food which he doesn't like so much AND to control his intake. But on one hand he doesn't seem to lose weight plus we are not sure whether he pooped. He definitely didn't do it today. And he is ok- but not his purrfect friendly self. He didn't want his tummy rubbed at the weekend and he spends most of the time doing the meatloaf.
So he's off to the vet tomorrow. It anyway was time.
Let's hope it is something simple and keep paws crossed.

Someone here posted about feeding a capsule of salmon oil to their constipated kitty in the cat food...and I guess it worked wonders!

I hope Tigris' problem is that simple and that he feels better soon!

I hope there's nothing serious wrong with gorgeous Tigris.

It sounds like a good idea to have his tummy checked, though. Have you tried giving him a mix of Hills W/D-S/D? That helped Fister - although recently, he has had Royal Canin's S/O, which also seems to be good for him.

Sending lots of good wishes for a succesful vet visit - and kisses to Tigris.

A vet visit is the best you can do. I hope it is nothing but I understand. Peppito is now 11 years old, and when he sleeps a bit more than usual, or is less active, I start worrying (a bit), wondering whether it could be a sign for something going wrong.
Kisses to Tigris (and Filou too!)

Barbara
09-08-2009, 06:25 AM
No- there are no good news.
It was all water in Tigris' tummy which by now the vet has taken out. There have been proteins in the liquid which could be a sign of a tumor. We will hear more about this tomorrow.
Tigris is anemic as well plus he shows signs of diabetes.
He behaves totally healthy though- has been complaining all the time and when he woke up from anesthesia he was his old self in no time, happy and purring.
The vet is very worried. Now we have to get a diagnosis first and then we'll take it from there.
I always worried for Filou but Tigris - we were always sure we would have him 20 years. He's 13 now.
Please send your thoughts to us. They are very appreciated.

Tigris is rather ok tonight- obviously feeling better without all that liquid in his belly.
Trude the vet called again to hear how he was. She is a wonderful vet and loves the boys very much- she has brought these 4 years of survival to Filou.
But we do not have much hope. I happened to speak to a human doctor tonight who works a lot with cancer patients. She said that it can happen with humans as well that the liquor can be the first sign of a terminal cancer.
We have another appointment tomorrow evening.
Thank you for all your thoughts and being here for us.

Barbara...is there an update on our sweet boy Tigris?

Eddie is asking...;-))

Barbara
09-09-2009, 01:33 PM
Ok we went with Tigris to see the vet tonight and here is the outcome- it's a mix and not yet definite:
First: She did a puncture yesterday to get the fluid out and she says it was more than she ever took from a cat in 40 years of practice. She also did an ultrasound but there was still so much fluid left in the poor boy that she didn't see anything clearly. This fluid, about a quart, had blood and many proteins in it. She says the fluid is an exudate which means all the fluids of poor Tigris' body run into his tummy- which is why he is dehydrated and anemic. She had real problems to get enough blood for the analysis.
Second: we know it is not the heart and we know it isn't FIP.
Third: The bloodwork had come back from the lab and it was not as bad as she had expected. The only levels that were really off were the liver values. Unfortunately the analysis of the fluid had'nt arrived yet.
We will wait for this analysis to come back.
The options: We suppose the analysis of the fluids will show some cancer, maybe in the liver. To really see it she recommends a CT. From there we can see whether surgery makes sense or whether it doesn't. She gives him pred injections now as they should close the vessels a little so that he does not lose that much fluid.
The surprise: She couldn't believe how feisty Tigris was under such a serious condition. He jumps on the table (at home, not at the vets), he eats- and with Trude, the vet, he gave headbumpies and began to play with her.
So at least he is not in any pain.
Keep us all in your thoughts. I need a miracle here. But at least it doesn't sound as impossible as it sounded yesterday.

We still do not know much more. The analysis of the fluid is back and they say they suspect a tumor. That's more or less what we knew before.
Trude the vet was here this afternoon and gave Tigris another pred shot. He is quite happy, jumped on the table to greet her and did the same for me when I came home. At least he is not in pain and feels good.
The vet says only FIP, or the heart (which is already excluded) or a tumor could be the cause of that fluid ... All three of us are very glad that Tigris is in such good shape although we cannot explain it. I tend to think it is Pet Talk prayers.
So it's a CT on Monday. Siegmar and Trude will drive Tigris to the clinic and then we should know more. Tomorrow it's another pred injection.
Thank you for all your support. It's more appreciated than I can tell.

It's true- the pred makes him hungry. And today he even pooped - which may have been the first time in several days.
The vet and us cannot get over how active he is. Seeing Trude having hope helps me a lot- she has seen quite more sick kitties than I have.
He has his CT appointment in a clinic on Monday at ten. Today he went for his pred shot- protesting all the way. Tomorrow we will go again. Sunday our good boy is a privileged patient again and the vet will come to see him here;)

My heart goes out to Tigris and I hope that everything turns out ok. I seem to always have problems with my kitties when they turn 12. Something about 12 - usually means a slew of health problems. My Sydney was diagnosed with cancer back in June of 2008. It was hands down the most stressful year of my life. The good news is, we gave her chemo treatments, and her cancer has been in remission since December of 2008. I guess for me - having hope, and this website, really helped me a whole lot. I hope that Tigirs doesn't have cancer, however, if she he does, know that there are options out there. Good luck to you and please keep us updated!:love::love:

Poor Tigris went to have a CT but they didn't see much either- there is still no diagnosis.
What they did is a biopsy and they have taken samples of the colon and the liver. The colon doesn't look good- but they cannot really say what it is. It may take 4-6 days until the biopsy results come back.
Now the good news: he is awake already but still getting IV fluids. He will have to spend the night in the clinic and come home tomorrow.
I want to know what it is. I should work but instead I am on the phone and just worrying.

Barbara and Siegmar. I feel so horrible that you still have no concrete explanation as to why Tigris is ill.

You will most likely know when he is feeling poorly. That would be my guide for the time being. I wonder if you could contact the person(s) breeder where you got Tigris, to see if they have any insight. Sometimes breeders have problems passed down from cat to cat. I know my breeder would be happy to answer any questions I may have about my cats' health.

Gosh, you must be SO frustrated and worried.

Barbara, I can understand so well that you're worried and nervous! It's bad enough to know that your beloved kitty is ill, but not knowing what it is and waiting for the test results is even worse!

Well, guess the good news is that Tigris doesn't seem to feel too bad. He's such a brave little boy!

Poor Tigris is home. It is obvious that the biopsy put some stress on him as well. The vet talked to the clinic again and while we have to wait for the biopsy results they said that the tissue in his intestines that may be tumorous or not is something dangerous and cannot be fixed by surgrey. The option would be that it is the result of an inflammation or a broken ulcer or something.
We will have to see to give him some happy time.............
I hope he feels better tomorrow. No more surgery for Tigris.

How is dear Tigris? Any news?

Barbara
09-17-2009, 10:00 AM
I am afraid Tigris is not well.
He is not in pain, our wonderful vet comes to see him to give him the shots but he is by far not himself.
Most of the time he likes to be where we are but sometimes he hides.
The worst thing: he has not eaten yet since Monday - he only drank. Well, he ate today two tiny pieces of chicken.
I thought yesterday I had cried all the tears I had but obviously there are new ones available.
:(

Oh Barbara, I'm SO sorry to hear this, and I'm crying with you. :( I do hope Tigris will start eating more and get better! He is such a wonderful boy!

I was thinking... perhaps the stress from all those vet visits has influenced his appetite.

Well, Vio (as in Vio&Juni) and her husband came yesterday to pay Tigris a visit.
He was sitting under the bed but let Vio who is one of his many girlfriends pet him.
She brought Temptations but they couldn't temptate him :( Siegmar had bought fresh chicken and he ate two tiny pieces.
But right after Vio was gone, the boy came out under the bed and tried to jump on the table. He couldn't do it. But in the middle of the night Siegmar found him up in the cat tree!!!!!!! On the highest level, right under the ceiling. No idea how he managed.
But he's back to under the bed this morning.
It's all a mix of feelings. We don't give up hope he may eat again. He drinks and made a nice lake into the litterbox.

Randi
09-18-2009, 05:41 AM
It's also with mixed feelings I read this. Tigris doesn't seem very fresh, but the fact that he managed to jump all the way up in the cat tree shows he still has some strengh. :) It's been a stressful time for him going back and forth to the vet and being poked etc., so maybe he just needs some quiet time. Still, it's good that Siegmar is there with him all the time.

Was the chicken you gave him boiled? Have you tried giving him raw meat? Or raw white fish? Fister can't stay away from that, so perhaps it's worth a try.

I so hope Tigris will get better - I send him lots of kisses.

Hi God ~

We all know it's best to send Tigris up to You at the Bridge ...
But that doesn't help with doing it.

Please give Siegmar and Barbara the Love & strength to help Tigris
begin his big trip to Heaven.
And Help them to remember all the wonderful moments they've shared
with Dear Tigris over his lifetime.

Safe Trip, Tigris.
Save us a spot on the Bridge.
