There are several stories out there, but this one looked like it had the most info. I also heard there was an ariel shot of the compound but I haven't found it yet.

I remember when this happened like it was yesterday, it was so upsetting because it happened in such a rural seemingly safe place.

I think I remember it as well. The name Jaycee rings very familiar with me. I mean, I was only 18 when it happened myself. But I do remember. And it's weird for me to think she's been in a town very close to me (that I drive through each time I go to my parents house) for the past 18 years.

I couldn't read the whole thing. I just can't imagine having to live through something like that. And now is only the beginning. Those poor kids and the mother have to try to fit into a normal routine when they haven't the foggiest idea what it's like out here. They might be in therapy for ages and still be marked for life and not able to relate to our world. Too sad for words. I hope that sick couple get what's coming to them and not just another slap on the wrist. I think the other prisoners would take care of them fine and give them what they deserve.

To live in Prison they'd have to be in solitary.

Even in solitary the prisoners tend to find ways to get to people the want to.

Life sentences, and they won't last long. Death sentence appeals are expensive.

Those were sightings by neighbors, so they may have been mistaken.

I am sure the whole compound will now, finally, be searched. It is sad, the original girl and now her daughters will need years and years if not a lifetime of work to repair the damage this man - and his wife - have done to them.

Similar to Fritzl? (IIRC) in Austria.

The psychiatrists are in for one hell of a fight to achieve anything resembling normal kids at this point.

Hopefully the rest of the family can support them and help them get to a somewhat normal life.

No education from the time she was kidnapped, no checkups at the doctor or dentist for her or for her children, aside from the daily horror that she lived. Prison is too good for these people.

Let's hope! It doesn't sound like law enforcement in that area has been too "on top of things" for the past 18 years :(

When I read this I couldn't understand how he could live in a neighborhood like Antioch and not be discovered by neighbors. Housing in that area is very compact and yards are only separated by fences. I did a Google Earth of 1554 Walnut Avenue Antioch and it shows the tent city very clearly in the back yard. The reason more neighbors were not involved is because the property is flanked on two sides by commercial property. There was only one neighbor that had visual access to his tent city. I believe the police were still responsible for not catching this guy years ago.

I read earlier that the neighbor lady questioned the tents but her husband basically told her they should mind they're own business and not get involved. They could hear the kids outside playing.

I guess everyone has heard by now the story that this pervert is giving the police/public. He says he's turned his life around after the birth of the first daughter and what the public will discover about this story will be heartwarming. I'm not seeing anything heartwarming about it.

His own family says he's crazy.:(

I'll pray for the young mother and her two young girls. What a life they've had.:(

Has anyone heard what his wife's part was in this nightmare?

One story I read said a neighbor did complain and the police went to the house saw the backyard, that looked small and "normal". But they didn't have a search warrant so they didn't investigate further.

I have no clue what role the wife played, but I feel she is just as guilty as he is. Also, his mother was living there as well. They had to have known this was going on.

:o Yup your right.. I forgot if they are on death row then they get confined.. Ok just give them life & hope the prisoners take care of the rest.. Also I just read where the Father of the man that did the kidnapping States his son is crazy from being on LSD drug too long.. He said he has not seen his son in years..

Her role was co-conspirator plan and simple. She needs to fry right there with her husband.

 Oh I so agree.. They have said the wife admitted knowing about it.. They are thinking that she prob help her husband do the kidnapping in 1991..

Were these children even known to the authorities, i.e., did they have birth certificates or any kind of notification to the county and the state that they had been born? (I assume they were born at "home".. ?)

The reason I ask about this is, I first wondered: didn't the education authorities there send anyone around to find out why these kids weren't in school?.. and I assume even parents of "home-schooled" children need to produce some kind of documentation that it is going on and the kids are being educated, don't they?

Then I thought, if nobody else knew about the children at all, then there would be nobody official to wonder about their education or upbringing. Duh!

My God, these girls might as well have been living on Mars, the lives they've been living. This is all they know of "normal family life," since they've had no experience of any other way to live. And since Mother knows nothing of normal life since her pre-puberty days, she's not much farther ahead of her kids.

They were reportedly born there, in the compound, so no, no record of them, no birth certificate, no tracking, no educational system, no social workers - no one but that couple really knew they existed. It is sad.

The police should have gotten a search warrant back when they were told of
children in the back yard. He was a registered sex offender so the police had
probable cause to get a warrant. They were just to lazy to do their job. Where
were the children when the parole officers visited.

There is a picture of the backyard on sacbee.com, I know you have to register there to get the articles but the picture shows how horrid there living conditions were.

The reports I read said the wife was with him when the girl was kidnapped.

I know she's as guilty as he is. I had no idea his mother lived there too.

I guess what I really wonder is whether or not the wife was so scared of him she kept her mouth shut. Was she the type to just sit back and take orders from this creep or was she into this perversion along with him? In her mug shot, she looks terrified. I hope they hang both of them.

I can't help but wonder, everytime something like this happens, how many more people are there like this living in this country right now? Nobody knows anything about them.

Can you imagine the pain and horror that poor girl went through giving birth alone and with this pervert probably delivering it? I shudder just thinking about it. Those squallid living conditions, who knows what she might have had to endure afterwards. As for the wife being too frightened I don't buy that, she could have gone to a neighbour during the night or anytime he was gone out. She's as guilty as him and deserves the same as he gets...death penalty is too easy, let them rot in a hole somewhere the way that girl and her kids did. I think the police messed up big time on this one. And the neighbour who told his wife to mind her own business is partly to blame, had she had his support to check things out those kids might have been freed a long time ago.
I can't see the girl or those kids ever adapting to a normal life and I hope they get the full support they need and deserve. Hard to believe in this day and age that we still let innocent people fall through the cracks........

I think you probably would really be disturbed if you knew how many cases of similar MO's as this case or of serial killers are out there right now. We have a Jeffrey Dahmer in training right here in our midst named Micheal Vick. The numbers of cases would be frightening.

This is so true. Many of these cases over the years have followed the same MO. Hiding the girls in basements, buildings, etc. It's scary. These are the kinds of things that we hope we never hear.:(

Asiel: Wow, you're right. He must have delivered the babies. Maybe it was his worthless wife. I don't buy her being afraid either. She could have done something about her perverted husband. 18 years is a long time. I know there had to be a break in there somewhere for her to notify someone that could help her.

How does a man in jail for rape, meet and then later marry a woman? He had a 50 year sentance and only served 10.

One would think that our law enforcement people would try to pay closer attention these days. I hear so many stories about psycopaths falling through the cracks. What more do they need for a red flag?

It's a sad state of affairs.:(

Our local radio talk show has a segment on sex offenders about once a week. The Binghamton area has more than its fair share of them, because they move to downtown Bingo from NYC.

It has its own theme song, this thread has had the thing running through my head this afternoon:

Grab a needle
fill it full of bleach
stick it in their neck and watch them twitch.

Tony doesn't like pedophiles.

Even his dad believes his son is guilty. Even though Mrs Garrido is just as much to blame, to look at her face here is interesting. To me, it looks like fear has been permanently carved in her face.

There is a comment from an ex-wife in here too.

Phillip Garrido

Mr Garrido and his wife Nancy deny all 29 charges against them

Phillip Garrido was, according to those who knew him, always a strange man, at times even frightening - known locally as "creepy Phil".

As he and his wife, Nancy, are charged with the kidnap, rape and 18-year imprisonment of Jaycee Lee Dugard - charges that both deny - a picture is emerging of a controlling man, obsessed with religion, who told the FBI he could control minds.

At the same time, he has been described by psychologists as "very coherent" and guarded against people seeking information from him.

Mr Garrido first became known to police when, at the age of 25, he abducted and raped Katie Callaway Hall in Reno, Nevada.

Ms Hall told CNN he had seemed "perfectly normal" when he stopped her car on 22 November 1976 and asked for a lift.

But after handcuffing and gagging her, he took her to a well-prepared storeroom, where Ms Hall later said she thought she was going to die.

Her eight-hour ordeal changed her "in an instant", she said. Mr Garrido told her it was her own fault she had been abducted - because she was attractive.

At his trial, according to court documents, Mr Garrido said he had been overcome by sexual urges.

"I had this fantasy that was driving me to do this, inside of me; something that was making me want to do it without - no way to stop it," he said.

He testified to being a regular user of cocaine and LSD, and to masturbating in public places.

Street sermons

Mr Garrido was sentenced to 50 years in prison, but released on parole after less than 11 and added to the sex offenders list.

"You never thought anything bad about the guy. He was just kind of nutty"
Tim Allen Client of Mr Garrido's business

Christine Murphy says she was Mr Garrido's wife until the assault took place.

She told TV news show Inside Edition he was "a monster" who sought to control her, beating her and once pushing a pin into her face when he saw her talking to another man.

Mr Garrido met and married his second wife, Nancy, while he was still in prison.

Less has been said of Mrs Garrido - who is facing the same charges as her husband - but she was described as "caring" by one local.

In 1991, not long after his release, the Garridos allegedly abducted Ms Dugard and took her to their home in Antioch.

She spent the next 18 years living in a ramshackle arrangement of shacks and tents behind their house. She gave birth to two children allegedly fathered by Mr Garrido, the first when she was 14 years old.

Garrido's rambling account (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8226167.stm)

The situation seems to have passed largely unnoticed, but neighbours have since spoken of a strange and at times frightening man, prone to giving impromptu sermons on the street.

Monica Adams told the Associated Press news agency she knew he was a sex offender and had children at home, but assumed he was being monitored. She once asked Mr Garrido to leave a party in her garden because he was acting strangely and staring at women.

Tim Allen, a customer of Mr Garrido's printing shop, told AP he had a box through which he claimed God spoke.

"You never thought anything bad about the guy. He was just kind of nutty," said Mr Allen.

Several people recall seeing Ms Dugard working in the shop, going by the name of Allissa and passed off as Mr Garrido's daughter. Ms Dugard's daughters were also seen.

Nancy Garrido in court in California (28 August 2009)
Nancy Garrido is believed to have been fully involved in the scheme

Shortly before his deception unravelled, Mr Garrido's behaviour appears to have become even more erratic and bizarre.

A blog registered in his name was updated with rambling messages about government mind control and his own abilities.

"The Creator has given me the ability to speak in the tongues of angels," it read. "You too can witness what the world believes is impossible to reproduce."

It has also emerged that he gave a pile of documents to the FBI - one discussing how he overcame his sexual urges and could control minds with sounds, reports CNN.

"Certain behaviours cause a great deal of pain in myself and those who are victimised by those behaviours, especially our family and my wife," he wrote.

He said he had found "one of the most powerful freedoms imaginable" in overcoming his urges, and now had knowledge which "will begin to open a new pathway for us all".

"I believe my son killed the prostitutes"
Manuel Garrido

Mr Garrido was finally detained at a parole hearing he was ordered to attend. He had aroused suspicion by handing out religious material on a college campus accompanied by two young girls, described by police as appearing pale and "robotic".

Police said he appeared controlling, saying how proud he was of the girls, aged 11 and 15.

"They don't know any curse words. We raised them right. They don't know anything bad about the world," AP quoted him as saying.

Later, he gave a rambling interview from prison to the KCRA television channel in California, claiming his was a "powerful, heart-warming story, one that you're going to be really impressed by".

He said thousands would testify in his defence and there would be powerful witnesses. He had turned his life around, he said.

Criminal psychologist Dr David Holmes said the interview revealed someone who was "very, very coherent", using his claim of being divinely saved as a reason he should be immune from prosecution and not giving in to the interviewers questioning.

"A lot of people with personality disorders defend themselves in this way and don't allow other views to be in their social proximity, which is probably what he's done in his household. It's a form of brainwashing," he said Dr Holmes.

Police are now searching the Garrido's home and surrounding area. They suspect he may be behind the murders of several women working as prostitutes in the area in the 1990s.

But his father, Manuel, has little doubt. "He was a sex addict - that was his problem," he told the New York Post newspaper.

"I believe my son killed the prostitutes."

Both Mr and Mrs Garrido have denied all 29 charges.
