Hi all,
I am lost over what to do anymore.
Presley started to have seizures again. She hasn't had one since the end of April so this is a bit frustrating.
I do believe we know why she is having the seizures now.
In April i left Presley with some ex friends of mine, She was abused in their care. Her seizures started to happen pretty much that night but i didn't understand what it was and i thought it was her just moving around in her kennel at night. Well around this time we were switching her over to some different brand of food. Her seizrures wouldn't stop so we pulled her off the food and put her back on the brand she was on and they stopped. A couple of days ago she got into the dog food up at the barn where we keep the horses, This food is the same food she had back in April. I don't know if it is the food or if it is the taste and brought back something or what but she has had another series of seizures now.. It is very heartbreaking and all i can do now is keep her far away from the food like i have kept her far away from the people who abused her........
Anyways i wont be posting much for the next bit untill we get this under control.

I'm so sorry to hear about sweet Presley. I had a dog who had seizures too. She would sometimes go six months or more between them. If these keep happening, your vet may be able to put Presley on medicine to control them. It is possible they are food realted too. My advice is to keep a journal of when they happen and how long they lasted and how many she had. That will be a big help to the vet if she needs to be put on medication. I would also chat with the vet about this. Prayers are on the way for all of you.

I will certainly keep Presley in my prayers, Melissa. I hope you find the root of the problem real soon.

Poor sweet Presley.:( I hope your vet can find out what triggers the seizures and give you some medication to stop them. In the meantime we'll be thinking about her and sending you both positive thoughts and prayers.

I have a friend whose dog had seizures and she had special herbs that she gave him. If you would like me to ask her about what all she did, I'd be happy to find out for you.

My prayers will be with Presley.

Hi
Thank you guys! Also mugsy that would be great if you could find out the info. If it comes down to putting her on meds i really don't want her on Phenobarbital and such as it does such damage to the kidneys...
Anyways i am suffering a broken foot.. My arthritis is driving me batty the past few days and i have the flu!!!!!!!! Not a good day!
i'm off to bed again to snuggle with Presley.. She can keep me warm!

I'm so sad to hear Presley started having seizures again. Hopefully the vet can determine the trigger. The food sounds like it might be a source. I'm also very sorry to hear you're not feeling well and having some difficulties yourself. Until we hear from you again, we will be praying very hard for her and you both.

So sorry to hear about Presley..it sounds like maybe an allergy to the food?
My sister-in-law's malamute has seizres and they dn't know why. He is on meds ( and the name is escaping me at the moment)but that helps in so much. unfortunatly, it is damaging his liver.
Hopefully just keeping Presley away from the food will be enough for her...poor baby! We'll be praying for you!

Hi guys,
Presley seems to be ok now. The blood work is coming back A-OK so i'm starting to really wonder what is going on here.
I am just trying to keep her quiet over the next few days and see what happens. Anyways I just wanted to let you know she has been ok since last night.. I am off back to bed for now..
Please take care all and thank you,
Melissa

My dog Rose has seizures, too. The vet started her on phenobarbitol (PB), and for awhile she did not have them so often. But as time went on, they got closer together (every one to two weeks) and even increasing the dosage of the PB didn't help. We then went to using potassium bromide (KBr) in combination with the PB. We are now gradually weaning her off the PB because of the ill effects it can have on the liver. She's been seizure free for almost two months now.

The Kbr doesn't have the bad longterm side effects that the PB does. The only catch is that it doesn't come all nicely packaged in pills - you have to get it from a compounding pharmacy that will mix it for you. You may want to discuss this option with your vet.

In any case, I wish you luck and will keep Presley in my prayers. Feel free to email me if you want to talk more.

Oh poor Presley, I am so sorry.

If at all possible, stay away from PB. It is not good for the liver. Kbr is a better med for the liver, if it is an option.

You are in my prayers.

I'm sorry that I have missed this thread until now. I am so sorry to hear about Presley and her seizures. It is a very frightening thing to watch, although when my miniature poodle, Ashley, used to get them the vet told me she was not in any pain when they were occurring. I would hope in Presley's case it is just a food allergy and that once you get that squared away the seizures will stop by themselves. Ashley developed them at about age 8 or 9 and was put on Phenobarb twice a day. The seizures stopped immediately. She lived to be 14 and died from liver complications. It's funny but I never did make the possible connection between the PB and the liver damage until just now and my vet never suggested it as a possible cause.

Hi Guys,
Presley has had a sorta relaxing weekend at home. She has been out a few times for a few runs and plays but that is it and she hasn't had anymore seizures over the weekend!!! I had been in bed with the flu for most of the weekend so she has been spending it with my mom. She has been great.. We have an appointment at the vets this afternoon so we will see what he has to say.
Thank you all :)

I'm SO sorry it took me this long to get back to you. I talked to my friend last night and she said that in addition to the Pheno Barb she gave Bandit St. John's Wort and then also after awhile she started giving him Potassium Bromate with no dyes or preservatives (which I think she had to get from a holistic pharmacy) and that's less intrusive to the liver than the Pheno Barb.
